Recommended Posts

Hi all ...

I'm praticing the harrier and i've been reading a lot about the harrier and there is something i can't figure out.

In 1.05 does the Harrier do vertical Takeoff ?? if so how can i acomplish this ??

it doesn't, you need to have at least a speed of 50-60 to be able to take of. activate the hover at 50, pull it up and if you pull enought you might stay still in the air. all you can do is land with hover and its allmost impossible to stand still in the air.

So if i understand correctly .. we can't do vertical takeoff like the harrier does .. only short takeoff is this correct ??

Because i have tried the vertical landing and that i can do .. with a bit of pratice it really is great, only thing missing is the STOVL.

Will this be corrected in the upcoming 1.07 ?

Even in real life the Harrier cannot VTOL with a full all up weight (loaded with full fuel-tanks and ordnance).

Another reason why I went on to fly Jaguars instead of the Harrier.

Hmmm i don't understand why BIS put a Harrier when it doesn't behave like one .. wouldn't it be more easy to apply say a F-16 or something ?? Then nobody would complain about it ...

Its represented as a STOVL (Short take off vertical landing) aircraft in ArmA. You wouldn't as pointed out by Hamish, take off vertically with ordenance and full fuel load so the options not there. Would be nice to have an option to hover though without decending. (Roll on RKSL)

So really at the moment it behaves more so how it would be operated correctly.

I would also hasten to add that the game is depicting a mix of Marine Corp and US Army kit. The Marines use the Harrier. Why swap it for an F-16? Harrier does the job and is part of a Rapid Reaction Corp whereas the F-16 is not.

The Harrier has never in it's life been able to VTOL with a full all up weight. The Pegasus engine doesn't have the power to do that. Hence STOVL is used. Even then VL is restricted on many occasions as it increases demands on the engine and as a result increases MU cycles.

if i were you, i would simply stop focus on this Army/Marine-mixup-is-not-right ballocks, there are far much more important things that BI need to deal with

Is a real Harrier unable to VTO with just four Sidewinders under its wing?

The BIS model of all vehicles has no consideration for "weight" in loadout effecting performance. Thus a harrier with 3000 lbs of bombs and 0 bombs behaves exactly the same.
