Wow, rellay great pictures. Have been in Warszawa last year, the main attraction for me was Praga. I didn't have the heart to take my camera with me there, though ;)

Haha, true, true..

I myself was once asked by a bunch of drunken 'Praga-locals' to pay them for letting me take a photo.. Luckilly a funny situation that turned out to be a good laugh; but could end up different..

That's why the next time you plan to visit Praga; be sure to take a historic bus ride; "Warsaw less known"; It's free :) but you need to book your seat in advance

it's much safer to photograph through the window...Although you get to miss the most interesting part that hides in those backalleys and courtyards...

The silly feeling is when you see the locals staring at the bus and throwing words at you.. They must feel like in a ZOO when people keep flashing from inside the bus......

btw; anybody knows what's the story with those sneakers hangin' there? Saw similar things in other cities; as well some friends told me they seen it Madrid for example... [?]

About the sneakers... I saw many of these in New Orleans,LA. Asked my friend, why the hell people hang trainers on the powerlines?

He replied that someone could have died here during the gang war or a gang just marked their turf to let others know about it. In New Orleans both versions are probable and escpecially the first one.

If you want to find out, ask the locals, I would not be suprised if some kids threw them for fun.

Thx Sudayev;

The theory with kids&fun is more likely than Cracow gang wars and territory markings; but hey; you'll never know ;)

Hah, exactly, you never know. Every city has it's own shady corners.

Good photos! keep it up.

Haha, no, a bus ride is too boring I think, as you say, the courtyards are the interesting part.

Yes it has

try to google it or look for the cover inspired by the label of a classical, ultracheap but megastrong vine-like alcohol drink

And yeah, Warsaw again:

To all guys from Warsaw!

Hey I snapped this photo from the viewpoint atop the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, when I was facing north.

This ruined tenement house was something unusual that my eye caught, especially when this building is like very close to city center.

I'd like to learn more about this building, do you know any stories related with ? How old is this and why this place is left alone as it is ?

nothing special, just a old left building, maybe people left it and it will be now place for another building, no story at all :)

some buildings are in too bad condition to repair and simply they later are destroyed and on such place new building is build

such process to left building, build new etc. can take some years so it is normal and not unusual, shame that all new architecture has no atmosphere

i love architecture from those classical 1820-1900 buildings

No No No No...

Sudayev, don't listen to this please

That's quite untrue...

Vilas, do your homework, you native Varsovian

Actually there is something rather special about the building Sudayev shown; and in fact about the whole street that it's situated on -> Próżna St. [Vain St.] In fact it's one of the most interesting and important places in Warsaw...

It's the last street of Jewish pre-war Warsaw that kept it's original architecture;

Unfortunately it's in a tragic condition; but there are plans to renovate all of the buildings, now giving an impression like the war ended a mont ago...

Nowadays the Jewish Culture Festival takes place there; everytime filling the street with crowds of people eager to experience the unique climate and mood that those 4 ruined houses, composing the street create.. During 4 days the street is given decorations that shall remind how busy it was, how filled with shops, restaurants and hotels...

There were many plans; dating back to 1950's when few of some fine art-deco houses on Próżna were taken down; to make place for contemporary architecture; last attempt to do so failed in the 1980's - stopped by the Varsovians who formed a Society for Preservation of Warsaw Heritage. In 1987 these four houses; with numbers 7.9.12.14 have been given status of Monuments

After 1989 several groups formed with the intention to bring life back to Próżna, last known one was Próżna Street Company (PSC), which is succesively buying the houses one after another from the city; perphaps they will succeed in renovating those once.

Till now they managed to 'rescue' the original wooden furniture and most of the fine pieces of interiors from the ground-level restaurant, once owned by Icek Blumenfeld at no.7 house. They dried up the fundaments and repaired the roof. As seen on the pics the buildings are now 'secured'. Rumors claim it shall be a hotel complex one day... but reality lets judge otherweis.. The whole street may collaps as the decay process progresses not through years as before, but from month to month...

Thanks for the explanation. I thought that was some important building from the Uprising '44 and they left it to make some kind of a memorial site.

Funny thing is that during my visit on the top of the Palace there was a large group of Korean tourists and many of them pointed their tele-lenses to photograph this ruin with detalis and one lady asked my if have any idea what this buliding is, I had no clue then ;)

There is also another building with history obviously. We were walking along the Nowy Swiat - Krakowskie Przedmiescie and suddenly we took right into small alley and there was an old, abandoned, gray building with many bullet holes around the windows (and basement windows too). This place was definitely used as some sort of strongpoint during the war.

A Very old tenement with small yard inside of it. There was wooden scaffolding and yellow plaque with information about ongoing constrution or renowation info.

I share your point of view about very modernist Warsaw look now. I'm not a big fan of blue glass and sharp edges too.

I'm glad they refurbished all quarters along Aleje Jerozolimskie, looks really good and stylish now.
