tweak for 2gb users

Recommended Posts

If u have atleast 2gb of RAM, try disabling windows pagefile completely. By doing this the game runs, much more smoother, and

no noticable texture loading issues here.  xmas_o.gif  xmas_o.gif

to disable pagefile:

-go to control panel

-click system

-go advanced--performance settings--advanced

-on the bottom u find virtual memory box

-go to change

-select appropriate drive(where pagefile is located)

-select no paging file

If u want to get pagefile back do the same as above, but select windows managed or custom size

Disabling the pagefile helped with OFP (and many other games) as well.

Just though you must keep in mind to *enable* it again after your

play session of ArmA, because a vast amount of programs

depend on that paging file.

All kind of errors occure, if you try to keep it disabled permanently.

Whats more?

If you try to force the pagefile to be disabled(fatal for Windows 2000! ),

at least Windows XP will create an *hidden* one in its

directory anyways. This, however, is not an fully *functional* one;..

think of it as some kind of 'emergency' paging file.

(reason: to thwart the heavy BSOD problems of W2K, if user

chose to disable paging and thus the OS entered some critical state)

There is an workaround however, if you want to try it.

If you got enough RAM, you can use specialized(sp?)

software to create large RAM drives, to put the

*mandatory* (for some programs) pagefile upon it.

(Cenatek, for example)

There are benefits and drawbacks, of course.

Maximizing RAM is always the *best* solution;

in addition with an modern HDD with low access times,

large cache + own channel for the HDD, that holds the paging file.

vs

having lots of RAM + creating an pagefile on an RAM drive;..

but *only* for *those* programs, which heavily depend upon

an existing, 'real' paging file.

Drawback is the software/driver administration layer inbetween

to create this RAM drive.

When it works; all good with good results.

--

Edit: Ohh, and I also want to add the possibility of an dedicated,

solid state RAM drive (i-RAM, RocketDrive, HyperOS Hyperdrive and others)

which can be used for that purpose.

Main drawback is the hefty price tag...for, say 8GB(upto 32GB) sad_o.gif

well after disabled pagefile, only prog i've had trouble with is

prime 95, stress test fails-ran out of virtual memory, but not a big deal.

allso tryed 256-256 pagefile, but the game strutters so much that it's unplayable.

like I said no probs here when disabling pagefile, and game runs smooth now.

Btw: Im running Windows xp x64 sp2

as long as u have sufficent amount of RAM (2gb min.) to keep the memory from filling up, u should be ok, without the slow ass pagefile...

haven't tested but it might work to some extend with 1-1.5gb

Can I ask as I'm not really computer literate, how do I disable my pagefile? Step by step would be good if it's complicated!

Cheers

Right Click My Computer

Select Advanced tab

Select Performance Settings

Select Advanced tab

Select Virtual memory - Change

Click the radar button that says No Page File, ok, and reboot.

It could cause issues for other programs and windows could stop operating so be aware of that before you make changes especially if you are not that computer literate.

The best advice for the pagefile I heard was 1. Make the size min to max the same (stops it constantly chanign its size) 2. Have the paging file on a separate disk preferably the fastest one and different from your o/s. 3. Never trust strangers.

My computer > properties > advanced > System(x) >

settings > advanced > pagingfile(or virtual memory settings(?) >

change > disable paging file > commit(! )

On drive C: (others) in the top window, there should be no

more visual paging files displayed.

Then, you need to reboot.

A usefull link for those of you wanting to know more.

I suggest, for those of you who are unsure about pagefiles to read this page, that way you can make an informed decision smile_o.gif

If u have probs with no page file, u can allways go back to windows managed. The issue here is that disabling pagefile, denyes

windows or games access to it and so they use RAM only instead, wich is milloin times more faster than pagefile, wich is written in harddisk.

I hope BIS reads this thread, Arma should be able to detect the amount of ram in our PC's and avoid the page file if the memory is suficient smile_o.gif .

I think this is one reason why the beta patch improved performance alot.

Quote[/b] ]

5142 - Fixed: Reduced virtual address space usage on computers with 1 GB or more of RAM.

They forgot that a PC is not an xbox wink_o.gif .

If I understand correctly, this is more of an windows issue, where windows want's to use pagefile more than RAM. I think BIS's part of this is an poorly optimized pagefile usage.

Dunno, try it out and see what it says.Tough Vista reseves 1gb for it self so with 2gb It could get tight, but no big harm done, u will probly see a pop-up saying that windows ran out of virtual memory.

If it happens go back to windows managed and reboot. whistle.gifwhistle.gifwhistle.gif

When I disable pagefile, windows creates a large hidden pagefile on its own, lol. That can be solved by making a small pagefile. Even if you make your main pagefile on a seperate disk, you need to create a small 2 meg pagefile on system drive or else windows XP will create a hidden one(probaly about 1.5x the size of your ram). Its just the way XP is coded.

Maybe XP64 with its increased memory capacity is different.

Hmm I doubt BIS controls the Windows pagefiles, I think they let the operating system handle that... would be much easier programming that way I think smile_o.gif

By the way, if you want to see how RAM is properly utilized, try a Linux-kernel based operating system and watch how your swap partition (or "pagefile") is not used until as a last resort.

i run 3GB 32bit system and 4 GB 64bit system

and i can tell you that disable of pagefile results in no perf gain

i guess reason is that i use fast dedicated drives for pagefile (two each on different drive) and game is on another raid ...

yep that might be it, If u have modified (made pagefile faster).

For the common users, with a middlerange, or even high-end users this will help im sure. As it is windows likes to use pagefile before RAM, and we all know that RAM is 100 times faster, so disabling pagefile utilizes ALL ur RAM to be used in-game, without the need to load stuff out of the slow pagefile.

The reason this is for the 2gb and upwards users, because 1 gb IMO is not enough to be used with gaming and I bet u will get ran out of virtual memory errors.

for my experience, I've been using no pagefile constantly for 2-3 weeks now and havent encountered a single error.
