Burning Sands: Africa '42

Nah, won't be permanent. As soon as some time frees up it's back to work. Unfortunatley it's going to take a week or two till that time comes up.

Well the silence is because I'm working on it and I've been posting those WIPs in the hopes that somebody might jump aboard and give me a hand. But seeing how that's not going to happen I've decided to not post WIP stuff and post once I get stuff ingame and working.

But just to prove it's not dead, here are yet again some more WIPs:

First off the Universal Carrier model:

carrier1su2.jpg

The SMLE WIP:

smle12jn2.jpg

And the brit soldier WIP:

test47ur4.jpg

the far shot looks pretty shitty so here's one from a bit closer:

test48kl5.jpg

I'm currently working hard on getting the soldier done, constantly harrasing Col. Faulkner hoping that his patience for my never ending mistakes will last until I complete this.

I am hoping that I'll have the soldier roughly ingame by christmas and then post some actual screenshots.

Also, the Thompson I posted is now obsolete, the texture has been improved and it is now awaiting another improvment when I get the time. Also the sights have been replaced with the simpler Lyman sights for the sake of historical accuracy.

The reason why everything is taking so long is because getting the soldier to look right is rather hard, I'm always missing one thing, but I'm getting slowly slowly better at and I'm improving my refrence database all the time so I won't have to rely on Col. Faulkner all the time. Besides that is RL which takes up more and more time.

Cheers, MehMan

Looks really great Mehman!

Thanks for your effort and also for Col. Faulkner for helping out with the information.

Wish I had the skill/time to help or constructive critism to offer but sadly all I can do is post comments like this in hopes of encouragement smile_o.gif

Hehe, yeah, the skin tone will have to be changed for sure, but when I get there wink_o.gif. Will also have to ensure to give it the proper treatment to make him look like a real soldeir, with scars from the improperly healed scratches and cuts.

Damn, that looks like CoD2 soldiers, very good indeed!

They're much better than the Call of Dusty 2 soldiers!

These ones are correctly detailed and authentic and have the

correct weapons.

@ MehMan: Your KD shirt still has one too many buttons.

They normally had 3 fastened and the 4th left open at the

top.

The field-dressing pouch on the front of the shorts shouldn't

have a flap. It just buttoned through the front. Here are

some pics:

ffd2.jpgffd1.jpg

The flap can have one or two expansion pleats (the single

pleat ones are British pre-1941 issue - or later U.S. war aid).

The horizontal line just below the button is not the edge of a

flap, it is a line of stitching. The shorts and trousers were

issued with the field-dressings stitched in (to keep them

clean and prevent loss). According to the letter of the King's

Regulations the field dressings were only to be removed with

the permission of an officer!

Your No.1 rifle should be a bit thicker in the plan view around

the bolt than your model is. Here is a useful pic:

rifletop.jpg

I also have the SAID (official armourer's parts drawing) for

the S.M.L.E./No. 1. It would be a good reference for the

shape of the parts and the furniture. It is too big to post or

to put onto the photo server sites. Give me a shout if you

want it.

Here's the SAID for the bayonet you'll need. Useful for getting

the size and proportions right:

The brass hooks at the front are actually for attaching the

small pack. In which case there would be an extra layer of

webbing for the haversack straps - the haversack went on

over the webbing and hooked into the brass buckles at the

top of the basic pouches. The packs were horrible to put on

and take off (especially when they were wet - although that

was not a great concern out on the "mardam" I suppose). I

think I have a drawing of how it went on.  Just ask if you

want more info on how the '37 webbing battle order was

assembled.

Edit: Here is a drawing. Note how the small pack is assembled

as a separate unit. It is then put on over the webbing. The

brass hook at "A" slots into the buckle at "B" (on both sides).

Cool, nice webbing. smile_o.gif Very nice soldier model and textures man, I like it. And the No1 mk3's shape cought my eye too, although looks really really nice from the side. I was in a mod for BF2 that was working on North Africa and I was a researcher and effects maker, and did some texture work...not much though. 1 thing I did was the Royal Tank Guards beret with the silver badge thumbs-up.gif . I can't wait to see continued work, and I would like to see this project suceed!

Except that the webbing isn't quite right (yet). I wore the

1937 set as a spotty ("spotty" is an exaggeration: I have

always had skin like a girl - good-looking guy me! ) Army

Cadet. My grandpas wore it in earnest during the struggle to

deal with the Nazis and later against the communist menace.

The MehMan suffers from never having had to wear that

particular set in the field, I think.

WTF is "Royal Tank Guards"!?   confused_o.gif Do you mean "Royal Tank

Regiment"?

I fired the No. 1 rifle several times when I was a little Army

cadet. If only I'd had the same respect for the soldiers of

history in those days. Maybe I'd have viewed the horribly

bruised shoulder, and outrageous recoil and hassles in

cleaning, in a different light. I used to be able to shoot

the [proverbial] tanner off the [proverbial] "black person's"

[proverbial] ass with it, though. Putting 5 rounds of .303 SAA

ball through the same hole at 100 yards, with the iron sights

on the old Lee-Enfield.

@MehMan: TBH this is absolutely the only thing that's

preventing me from putting my "Armed Insult" CDs on E-bay.

I had to shit-can my own WW2 projects because I just

don'thave the 3D modelling smarts to do the projects justice.

I hope you can bring this to completion.  I'll do anything

necessary, in a "technical advisor" capacity, to bring this to

pass. My patience won't expire so long as you're interested n

doing this project. I'm severely impressed that a "foreigner"

(no offence! ) is interested in exploring this topic. I used to

know men from  my own regiment (Gordon Highlanders - 51st

Scottish Infantry division, in WW2) that were veterans of

this very conflict.

How the h*ll do you know so much Col.?

I just don't get it :\

Well, basically 40-odd years of playing with toy soldiers,

playing wargames and being a soldier of H. M. Queen and

thereafter making model soldiers with anal attention to

detail. If the boys were ready to go through that in reality,

it's the very least I can do to appreciate it authentically.
