Futureweapons

Recommended Posts

I have been watching this show on the Discovery channel and while the host can be a bit annoying with his overdramitized intensity, I love it.

It has me scouring the internet for more information on the weapons and systems, and trying myself to find info on new/exotic weapons.

So since I love to read about this stuff I challenge you all to find New/Future/Exotic weapons and systems to share.  Anyone else share in my fasination with this stuff?

Submission 1: XM307 25mm autocannon

Many may have read about this, and it should appear in an episode of Futureweapons sometime this season.  Appears brutal if caught at the business end.

This thing rules:

paw2025yl.jpg

Quote[/b] ] Caliber: 20x42

Type: semiautomatic, magazine fed

Overall length: 845 mm

Weight: 5.9 kg unloaded

Effective range: up to 1000 m (area targets)

Magazine capacity: 7 rounds

PAW-20 (PAW stands for Personal Assault Weapon) is a most recent development of the South-African company Gemaco Elbree Pty Ltd, and is marketed by South African military corporation DENEL. Ammunition of new type, developed for PAW-20, is produced by the PMP - DENEL munitions. While in some advertising texts the PAW-20 was listed as a "new assault rifle", it is obviously not a true assault rifle, but, rather a semi-automatic grenade launcher, which is intended as an infantry support weapon. PAW-20 fires specially developed explosive ammunition of 20mm caliber, using relatively short, straight cartridge cases. Muzzle velocity is about 300 m/s, which is quite low by artillery standards but rather high by standards of hand-held grenade launchers. Intended targets for PAW-20 are infantry in the open and behind light covers, as well as unarmored or lightly armored vehicles and thin-walled buildings. While maximum effective range for PAW-20 is given as 1000 meters, it is obviously stated for "area" targets such as groups of soldiers; against point targets like cars or machine gun nests, effective range will be much less probably no more than 300-400 meters - unless gun will be used in conjunction with laser rangefinder and computerized sight with built-in ballistic calculator.

Standard ammunition at this time is available in HE, HE-I and TP (practice) variety, with other types being in development. Weight of the round warhead is listed as 105 gram, and it seems that new round consists of a standard 20mm projectile (as used in aircraft cannons) loaded into short, straight-walled case of 42mm length. All ammunition is point-detonating only, unlike the American XM-25, to which PAW-20 is a direct competitor.

PAW-20 is semiautomatic, gas operated weapon with rotary bolt locking. The entire barrel / bolt group is allowed to recoil within the polymer gun housing for about 75mm (3"), in attempt to decrease peak recoil down to manageable level. General layout of the gun is somewhat unusual as the pistol grip with the trigger is located at the right side of the receiver. Gun is fed from detachable box magazines which hold 7 rounds of ammunition. Empty cartridge cases are ejected through the window on the left side of the weapon, right in the front of the firer's face. Sighting equipment is installed on two Picatinny-type rails located in parallel at the top of the gun housing. Preferred sighting arrangement seems to be a red-dot type collimating sight, but other sight options also available

The land walker!

This is quite intresting, big old walking robot with guns! theres videos on the website of it walking and shooting rubber bullets. Although it dosent really walk but rather slide its legs along on wheels. Also id guess this thing would be pretty useless in real life combat. One rocket at the legs or the body and it fall over. But still cool non the less.

Yeah, imagine using that in a Paintball game!!! biggrin_o.gifyay.gif

Metal Storm

Electronically initiated, "stacked projectile" weapon technologie

The Technology of Metal Storm Limited

Metal Storm technology is an electronically initiated, stacked projectile system that removes the mechanisms required to fire a conventional weapon. Effectively, the only parts that move in Metal Storm’s technology are the projectiles contained within the barrels. Multiple projectiles are stacked in a barrel. The technology allows each projectile to be fired sequentially from the barrel.

Metal Storm’s fully loaded barrel tubes are essentially serviceable weapons, without the traditional ammunition feed or ejection system, breech opening or any other moving parts. Metal Storm barrels can be effectively grouped in multiple configurations to meet a diversity of applications.

Metal Storm technology is ideally suited to the new generation of ‘network centric’ weapons that are designed to connect with today’s battlefield. Importantly, Metal Storm enabled systems are capable of local or remote operation through a computerized fire control system.

Our technology achieves its performance through the concept of numerous projectiles stacked in a barrel, in which each projectile has its own propellant load, such that the leading propellant can be reliably ignited to fire the projectile, without the resulting high pressure and temperature causing unplanned blow-by ignition of the following propellant load, and without collapse of the projectile column in the barrel.

Our technology has the following features and benefits:

* electronically programmable rates of fire from single shots to ultra-rapid rates;

* no moving parts, resulting in increased reliability and availability because there is less maintenance required and decreased possibility of malfunction;

* increased firepower to weight ratio resulting in a lighter weapon with greater firepower compared to conventional weapons;

* modular pods that could operate as a complete weapon system in one container;

* 100% electronic operation;

* the potential of grouping of multiple calibers and multiple lethalities in one gun allowing the user to vary the use to a specific situation;

* numerous hybrid configurations and Special Forces applications that could result in enhanced capabilities for use behind enemy lines; and

* fast second round strike capability before recoil effect.

knowing the result of ACR program I'd say there's no need to invent new technology for small arms. new models come and go but they use existing technology. waste of money and resources cos they could just tweak the old ones to make them work even better. my opinion is that there won't be any "future weapons" until someone comes up with a working laser blaster.

Heat ray of death! (well not really)

Well iv heard a lot about this recently, its a non leathal weapon system that shoots some sort of high energy beam that makes people feel as if there burning. This will most likely be used in crowd controll and situation when lethal force isnt required or can be avoided.

Although one does wonder if the power could be cranked up and actully burn people to death? any one got any more infomation on this?

I guess the M113 will find a new use being host to a number of these panels - because that Humvee mounting looks a bit fragile to me...

Right... in tests everybody has metal objects removed, even buttons and fly zippers etc... But if it were used on a real crowd... crazy_o.gif

I bet both Russia and China will be very eagerly wanting something like that as well... I wonder how they didn't invent it first... crazy_o.gif

Supposedly, the removal of all objects which could become 'hotspots' (and thus set a person on fire) was a necessary precaution in the early stages of testing. The contractor claims that the weapon was later tested under more realistic circumstances without adverse effects on the test subjects. Of course, nobody has any idea what the long-term effects are.

Oh, it's also very easy to turn this into an offensive weapon - lower the frequency, and the beams will penetrate much deeper. Who knows what the effect will be if you excite water molecules deep in the body, rather than 0.5 mm into the skin, where only the nerve endings are affected. Boiling someone alive; now that should prove to be quite a sight.

Critics say that in the wrong hands, this could prove to be a very intense torture tool. The question is: what couldn't? Should we deny our law enforcement agencies access to firearms, because firearms in the hand of the wrong people could harm innocents? Of course not. It's a tricky issue... If this works, it would be a huge improvement over the current instruments of riot control - rubber bullets, watercannons, gas... These things can maim or even kill. If the ADS is what the makers claim it to be, then it would be a great addition to the police arsenal.

That 20mm weapon while cool looks like it needs some refinement. This nasty little thing looks like the first small step in a remote controlled battlefield.

From the looks of weapons like these, we are planning on wars fought my Dorito eating techno-geeks sitting in comfortable chairs.

About that mech thing, I'm wondering why they have to make it so tall. If they were to make the legs shorter and maybe even on the side rather than the bottom of the cockpit it might give a lower center of gravity, and profile, as well as lessen the risk for problems with balance. Instead of mimicking human movement why not just make it similar but more effective. Plus aesthetically I think it being so high and awkward looking it just looks like crap to me. Unless it was agile, which I highly doubt it is, then maybe it could prove effective but if it was essentially skating around on wheels and I saw it coming at me I would laugh my ass off watching it shuffle over to me while I hit a leg with one rocket all while still laughing.

Well, duh, that thing is designed for entertainment and it shoots soft pink rubber balls, you'd be expected to laugh.

There's just no way that any bipedal mech-like machines will ever be used in real warfare as there are more effective means of moving on land such as wheels and tracks. Although... if I were a dictator, I'd have the scientists and engineers working on mechs that shoot visible rays-of-death right away (they'd also have to have mini-guns and flamethrowers against the pesky infantry and huge blades for close combat with other mechs).

On a more serious note, any dictator could develop tall mechs as crowd-control things, since they look awesome and fear-inspiring (nobody would like to get caught under a foot of one of those things, and the weaponry it would be carrying would be far-reaching into any crowd).

looks like plastic to me. I wouldn't trust it at all.

"Star Wars and Halo" rofl.gif whaddya know, next they'll come up with the REAL Robocop biggrin_o.gifbiggrin_o.gif

Just lol and move on?

I mean the 60's "future" predictions had us all wearing tin-foil suits with a base on the moon by now (actually by 1999 tounge2.gif)

They predicted pilotless aircraft by the 70's and all that other guff.

So far all these "future-ish" designs have either failed miserably or been canned halfway through dev. firefoxlover.gif

Heh imagine we took some one from the 60's and brought them to today, 2007. They'd be like '"have we solved world hunger? world peace? cure for cancer? how about a city on the moon? flying cars? silver space suits?!"

"nope...but we got internet porn and global warming!"

Just because its abit far fetched doesnt mean we should turn our backs, years ago people thought aircraft playing a role in war was insane, today they are very much essential.

Troy Hurtubise has made a name for himself for being somewhat extravagant, however the guy is a idealist. His brother is in Afganistan now so I wouldnt doubt his dedication and intentions not once.

Id love to see his claims of the suit put into practise and see it through field tests. smile_o.gif

This is another weapon I saw on this weeks episode of future weapons.

Needing something with the punch of a rifle and the compactness of a submachine gun, H&K has found a middle ground in the MP-7.  It uses a scaled down round that still has the power to penetrate body armour, unlike the 9mm.

Looks cool too.

MP-7A1

On a side note, this lil' suker looks like a toy. Defineately the smallest sub I have seen.

PP2000

Well, dunno about the PP2000 being ultrasmall. Glock 18, Vz 61 Skorpion, Micro UZI, Steyr TMP, OTs-33 "Pernach", APS... all are smaller than PP-2000 and fully automatic. And MP-7 has been in the business for a while already, yet an interesting gun though. wink_o.gif
