As things stand at the moment, OFP is better in terms of gameplay and everything else bar graphics when you come to think of it. However original flashpoint 1985 used to be buggy and had very little functionality until the community started work and patches were released. It is going to take a while before Armed Assault is fully patched and the community is in full swing of creating new content. Then this game will live up to everything, we jus have to wait for it, and there's no need to worry biggrin_o.gif

This thread will be gonzo in no time, but I'll add my input in the mean time...

ArmA has it's bugs, but overall I'd say it's 100% better than OFP. Really, it IS ofp, if you ask me. Just OFP with 100% better graphics. It's all eye candy, really. But for some people, that means a lot. I tried playing OFP again a few days ago, before I downloaded ArmA, and even with some of the better mods out there, I couldnt' help but cringe at the crappy graphics.

ArmA on the other hand looks awesome, and on my system runs excellent on the highest settings most of the time. Sometimes it starts to get choppy, and then I turn it down to medium, but even at medium the game looks much better than OFP.

I know I'm focusing mostly on the graphics, and not on gameplay here, but that's because if you ask me, the gameplay is almost exactly like OFP. ArmA is, in my opinion, just a repackaged, better looking OFP. And for me, I'm happy with that. I loved OFP, but it's popularity was dwindling.

ArmA will bring back all of the old OFP fans, and hopefully bring a whole lot of new blood in, with it's catchy eye candy.

ArmA gets an A+ in my book, even if it is just OFP with better graphics, and more bugs.

Might be annoying now, but that will make the game last longer in the long run. In a couple of years most if not all of us still playing ArmA will play it on High-Very High settings. I think making it really heavy from the start is actually a good thing.

Im impressed, i could have waited a bit longer so all the bugs would have been ironed out but the game in its current state is defintly playable. I have a low-mid end PC (x2 4200+, 1,5gb ram, x1600XT) and i can play the game smooth on medium settings (except AA and shadows, on low, shadows off in forests). There are 0 bugs thay seriously damage the gameplay, some things could have been done better or feel kinda rushed, but everything works.

As long as you keep your PC quite optimized you shouldnt encounter big performance issues (except on an unpatched german version, but who would leave his game unpatched?)

Overall the scores are 'ok', although Czech magazines seem to give the game a much lower rating then Germans, hell i calculated the average scores:

Overall score: 7.97/10

(Websites only)

German score: 8.91

Czech score: 7.02

Thats almost 2 points, ive no idea why the difference is so big

(even without the 6/6 from the preview score the german version gets 8.64, which is still 1.62 points higher then the Czech average)

(I used my preview topic as a source, not sure if there are more reviews out there)

Well, i am playing coop missions most of the time with great people (greetings to 6th Sense wink_o.gif ) and i dont know any other game that satisfied me in such a cool, atmospheric way.

I give a 90+ % for ArmA. (even with the bugs)

So, i really think it depends on what you are doing. Chosing randomly a MP server with anonymous people shooting each other in DM isnt much fun for me, neither just playing solo mission with AI. It can be used to train and can be fun too, but its nothing compared to a coop game in veteran mode with a disciplined team with commited team mates.

Well, I really like ArmA so far. It's very immersive, and I feel that practicing really pays off. So it has bugs. Every game I've played this year has had bugs. Live with it. At least BIS is a company that brings out patches relatively fast.

100% worth the wait. Bugs can be and will be fixed and I am very much impressed on what I have seen so far!

We need to keep behind companies like BIS. Without a publishing deal pretty late on in the games development cannot have been easy!

yes worth the wait,to me it's ofp with a new island and better graphics.exactly what was needed to be honest.what else have we got for online pc gaming ,bf2142 ? rainbow six vegas ? lol.

they've brought flashpoint back, time to dust off our keyboards.

No.

I really dont like it.

And its nothing to do with bugs, those are fixable.

What is not fixable is gameplay.

Its clunky, tedious, slooooooow, and not user-friendly.

The new aiming system sucks and its far more complicated than OFPS which alongside its slow nature was cool and refreshing. It was a fresh breeze of air in middle of all the quake3 cs and all those games  at the time.

Now they´ve surpassed the limits of realism and have given us a game which simply doesnt play well.

Yesterday i played multiplayer with like 24 persons and it sucked sooooooooo much.

I probably made 6 shots in total... whenever i had someone in my aimpoint i didnt even try to make a single shot because i knew i wouldnt hit him, rifle sway is too much and to hit something you need to invest 3-4 seconds and be in the best position available which eliminates all dynamism from the game.

To hit something while moving along the map is quite impossible and i dont say hitting something while running, no no, just moving to one posiition, looking and shooting.

Your chances is that you die from someone waiting behind a corner to nail you.

In ofp at least you could move much more fluidly and that didnt happen so much.

Along with that matter only camperism will succeed in this game and that eliminates a 90% of public to play it.

Camperism is good in some percentage, not all of it.

I like fight sims that go away from quake or even some battlefield attitudes but this is really gross.

Im terribly dissapointed with the game and i dont think it will last very long in my HD, i dont think it will even make it to the first serious patch.

I find that people that like this type of gampley  play coops all the way.

Well that speaks for itself, coop is a minimum part of internet gameplay which is hardly played at all.

Fun is with CTF.s conquest, CTIS and everything else. People play on MP to play against other people, not to play against AI.

EDIT: and for all those people that say graphics are cool and as such having high requirements is good on the long run... well, get yourselfs some glasses because these graphics will be outdated in a year or less. OFP in comparison had much better graphics in 2001 than ARMA has in 2006.

@ Mora2:

Well, sounds like you have trouble with mouse lag. Yesterday i found out, that it can make a REAL difference, which mouse driver you are using. Till now, i always used just the standard windows driver. And i was surprised, how good my roommate can aime at his PC (with less powerfull hardware) compared to me at my computer. So i installed the mouse drivers from logitech for my logitech mouse and the mouse lag has nearly gone, without changing graphic settings.

So, give it a try.

ArmA is a good game but for the amount of time and experience they had they should have done better. I'll probably get flamed but if you sit down and think about it they really did waste a lot of time. Some things that worked in OFP are now buggy and crap, mainly some of the editor commands don't do anything (and the editor is practically identical to OFP but with some new commands) and the choppers... enough said about them. What they have done in my eyes is torn down OFP to the rubble you see when you destroy a building and rebuilt it when they could have just renovated

The graphics and physics are probly the only 2 things that should have been completely reworked and they should have been done first. And then add to the gameplay rather than rework it. They have redone the infantry side which is MUCH (understatement) better than OFP its much more 'solid' not like its held together with blue tac and on the verge of falling apart. The choppers enough said. Planes are not really either way they have changed but thats it. Cars/trucks handle same or slightly worse than in OFP, I was hoping for more rally style driving but its still like a 10hp lawnmower just harder to turn. The sound engine is better in areas but has gone backwards in others (distance mainly)

The game is clearly an improvement over OFP and will only get better, but for the time they've had it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect COMPLETELY fixed physics/collision and of course improved, the graphics they have now, better optimisation, improved control system (infantry movement improved but ordering and vehicles the currently the same), AI that isn't completely backwards at times, missions that dont have scripting errors, improved more realistic chopper and plane handling and control systems, a completely bugless sound system and NOTHING broken which worked fine in OFP. Too much time reworking models/textures and not enough on game development imo

@ Mora2: what the hell are you talking about? aiming is the same in ArmA as in OFP, try adjusting your mouse sensitivity so its equal X and Y. Crosshairs are the same (except for the dragunov) only look better, weapon sway is WAAAAAAY too little not too much. I can snipe people standing up. And the infantry control system in ArmA is much more fluid than the clunk.. clunk.. clunk woops too far dead mad_o.gif system of OFP

icon_rolleyes.gif Another excuse to create a thread about the sukkage of ArmA. I am majority, the vote says so. ArmA didn't fulfill my expectations, it blew them away.

I'd seriously like to thank BIS for remembering what made OFP loved and for the guts to push the limits further. I'm sure there'll be an ArmA BF2/BF2142 mod, like there are realism mods for BF2. My ArmA is perfect, my online experiences also. My confidence in BIS is total. Bugs will be bugs, but that's what you get, when you decide you want to push limits, rather than secure a boring Status Quo.

The german reviews are fair.

the AI and physics bugs are really annoying and cost alot of fun , while playing.

If they are fixed , the game has the potential for a 90s score.

And of course its the best modding plattform so far.

Just addressing some points:

improved control system (infantry movement improved but ordering and vehicles the currently the same)

- there is a changed control system available (default: Spacebar); I didn't get the hang of it yet either but it might become useful commanding bigger troops

AI that isn't completely backwards at times

- while the AI acts sometimes odd (and what AI doesn't; you will often see humans do worse tounge2.gif ) I think you can't deny that compared to OFP it is a vast improvement most of the other times

missions that dont have scripting errors

- the same way the source code of the game will never be bugfree you can't expect that mission scripts would be either

improved more realistic chopper and plane handling and control systems

- no doubt they had something in mind when they changed the chopper handling to what it currently is (probably it is perfect for a military simulator hooked up to VBS), but no doubt either that it needs some tweaking for the average gamer

a completely bugless sound system

- but you noticed that they changed the sound engine from DirectSound to OpenAL?!

and NOTHING broken which worked fine in OFP

- stagnancy is recession; and some might say things were fine that others felt need a change, e.g. I think driving cars & trucks has much improved over OFP

Too much time reworking models/textures and not enough on game development

- these are different teams working on the game engine and the models and it is probably easier to find additional artists than coders (esp. for a custom engine, probably one which is mostly commented in czech...)

I close threads for a reason, for example if someone posts a review in a separate thread when there's an existing review thread, or someone posts a whine in a separate thread when there's an existing whine thread (which there is).

However do you see anywhere a poll saying was it worth it? I don't and thus this will not be closed smile_o.gif

That's just a small sample of the worst Czech reviews to take things out of context to try to prove your point.

For whatever reason the Czech scores are much lower than the German ones, average is 10% lower but they're not a full reflection of the game:
