i think its his graphics card looking at cooler on it im guessing its a 8800gts or gtx and they run bloody hot anyway and are known to run 60s at idle and 70s or 80s when under full load. If Your worried about its temp you can buy or make an additional cooler to blow more air on it from beneath using the pci backing plate as a mounting.

I have a question: lately, my monitor has been having a problem where it flickers and the picture gets a heavy, blue tinge to it. It's very intermittent - sometimes I don't see it for days, sometimes every time I power up.

Well, my monitor was pretty old anyway, so I went out and bought a new one. After a couple of weeks, the new monitor is exhibitring the same symptoms.

This leads me to believe that it must be the video card (Geforce4 Ti4600).

Anyone heard of anything like this before? confused_o.gif

I would say it was 50/50 your monitor or videocard. Yes, I've seen this. Usually it happens when the monitor (CRT only) is cold or the videocard hot.

Clearly, you've proven its the videocard.

I guess its about time you put that TI4600 to rest.

Well he was complaining about graphics card temp, and he has 2 80mm low intakes so what came to mind was hot air concentrating inside the frame due to bad air flow.

I would have picked a diferent case if i were him whistle.gif ...

the case have got 4 8cm at the lower front and 2 at the back, the PSU uses a single 12 cm to suckup air around the CPU, the front panel above the DVD is already removed so that air is coming in without problem, i could have move 1 of the HD to the upper slot (the SATA is my choose as its cable is smallest)

but i dont think it would do much better

anyway for a 4 years old case, thats not that bad after all for a

@Jezz, when i close the case door it slowly climb to 67 and stay there, it wont drop lower then that after 3 hours of intensive fire fight but it wouldnt stay 78 after that 3 hours too, so i assume that the fan is still working, only not totally effectively, by open up the case it will drop to 61 max in idle, but it still will get to 67 and stay there most of the time

I've got a few software questions for you guys. I've got an AVI file of a concert, which contains no scenes (It's just continuous footage). The sound is of good quality. I was wondering if there was a program that could:

1. Record the soundtrack into an MP3 file.

2. Split that soundtrack into distinct songs so I could burn them onto a CD and listen to the concert on my stereo.

Blackdog:

Why not get a Core 2 Duo instead of the Athlon-64? And what sort of PSU are you getting?

I'm an AMD fanboy, they're the same price, and from the reviews I've seen they have near-equal performance. I'm going to get a kick-ass PSU, TBD...

E6300 overclocked beats Athlon 64 6000+ by 15-40%,and its cheaper,E6300 @3.2 vs 6000+ @ 3.2 =E6300 is faster and you can push E6300 even higher.

Even the E4300 hits 3.6GHz on air easily with a good motherboard, the 6000+ would never hit that speed on air, and even still clock for clock the E4300 outperforms the 6000+.

Conclusion:clock for clock any C2D is 15-20% faster than any current AMD offering.

Get the C2D E6420, 2.13Ghz with 4mb cache.

A good balance between price and performance.

i was a AMD fanboy, but since C2D is out and the AMD get lame with its duo core i turn back to the evil Intel for now

Theres very little point in being a fanboy of a certain brand. Best thing is to pick whats the best. AMD does have certain strong points in this Core 2 Duo age - Their entry level Dual Cores are excelent value for money (€70 for a 3600+) and the next generation AMD CPUs will be backwards compatible with current motherboards, whereas everytime Intel makes a new model, they need a new chipset to support it. Of course, Core 2 Duo is definitely the best CPU for a mainstream PC.

odd question perhaps, but as I sit and watch 3ds max render oh so slowly (got to love complex lighting and refractions) I was looking at the system performance and what strain 3dsmax put on the dual core etc.

I noticed that the memory said I had 2048 of memory, but under available it said 1024... now, does this mean that 1024 is already being used, or is it only allowing 1024 of that 2048 to be used?

slightly confused myself.

On another note - I built a new pc, and installed everything fine (or so i thought) but my CD/DVD burner refuses to, well, burn anything. I'm more than happy using the windows drag and drop burn utility because it works, and im happy with that, but normally all you'd have to do is look at the properties of the cd driver and set it to allow burning...

on my drive properties it doesn't even have the burning tab undr which you set the drive to allow cd burning. My Overclockets receit says my dvd burner is a liteon, yet when I right click on the driver and look at the hardware, it thinks its a BENQ... is it possible windows has detected the hardware as something else and thats causing the problem?

I can't recall ever installing any firmware for the cd drive as it worked and I was happy to leave it till i realised this problem - plus I'm having difficulty working out which liteon I have, as the site is rather crap.

Lite-On dont make cd-drives. They usually use Benq, Sony or Toshiba/Samsung.

If you google the model-number I'm pretty sure you'll see if it really is a cd/dvd-writer or just a reader.

Can someone do me a favour please

What again are the new socket-standards for the upcoming processors?

For AMD I think it is AM2+

And for Intel... what was the name?

Socket 775 I belive (which are the Core 2 Duo/Quad socket).

If you need to know, the AM2 is 940-pins, but not the same as skt-940 (most commonly Opteron)

EDIT: Ah, missed the "+".

Checked Wikipedia for the Intel "future processors", but nothing particular new tounge2.gif

I'll check on smile_o.gif

AMD - AM3 (AM2+ is intermediate step, though AM3 processors will be backwards compatible with AM2 and AM2+ motherboards)

Intel - Plans for something called 'Socket H' (LGA715) for future desktop CPUs. No idea what it is or when its coming out, probably for the Nehalam CPU which is set to have a built in memory controller like the Athlon 64.

EDIT: Sure enough, Socket H wont be around for another 2-3 years. LGA775 is here to stay for the while.

thanks,

However I heard that for the new Core2 CPUs with FSB1333 will need a new mainboard. I head something about a platine that is called Bearlake and that the news CPUs wont be supported by the 775 Socket we have today. But I am realy no specialist so it could all be nonesense I am saying here

I ask this question because I want to know how much money I have to set aside for upgrading and when a purchase would make sense!
