Right now I just don´t have the time and the devotion to dive into all that new hardware to get my knowledge updated. Holidays is what I need...

I caught up on 2 years' worth of technological improvements, (needed a new system for ArmA lol), found what I was looking for, bought everything (spent under 400 pounds on a complete system biggrin_o.gif ) and had everything up and running within a week...

Surely if you're willing to invest in a decent PC, the time it would take to do that sort of research shouldn't be an issue?

It´s just like everyone recommends something different right now.

From what I´ve hear a SATA system with at least 2 GIG Ram and PCI Express should be ok. I´m still undecided on the processor though. As I´m a fan of AMD for years now (yes I am a pencil unlocker) I guess it will we be another AMD, I just don´t know what processor offers best price/value right now.

For the AGP cards. To my understanding there are some pretty decent AGP cards available, like the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro or the GeForce 7800 in variants.

I´m not playing 24h a day so I´m looking for a compromise between performance and price. I don´t need a dual SLI whatever card for 600 or more euros, I want to spend around 300 Euros for the gfx at max.

Seems real simple to me.

Everyone has a budget (wether you stick to it is up to you  biggrin_o.gif )

YOu build the best you can for the money, you may not get the latest whiz band system but given this day and age, its a safe bet to ensure your new mobo supports PCI-E and one would hope DX10

This kinda future proofs your new purchase.

After that you can go into all the detail you want or not.

I work in IT but reading up on the latest OMFG cards etc doesnt actaully turn me on. There are plenty of very usefull review sites out there to help make a purchase that suits my needs.

Recently I purchased a 7600GT - I knew full well it wasnt the best in the market but in terms of performance and what I could afford it was a huge step up from my old x1600 pro (agp)

Hi,

since the Commodore 64 days I have been using AMD processors on my home computers. If I'd buy a computer today, I would put a Intel Core 2 Duo processor into it. I'm restraining myself from buying anything though. There are rumours that new processors are coming out from AMD later this year and we should see what we can get then and at what price, also in the graphics card department.

An Athlon XP 1.4 GHz + 768 MB RAM + Nvidia 6600 GT 128 MB VRAM on a 4xAGP bus plays the ArmA demo sufficiently for now. It goes quite well, I did not expect to get the demo running playably at all. On the first go it seemed like it can't be played at all (all objects crumpled into very weird shape) but after tweaking the graphic settings the demo looks OK to my eyes and has sufficient performance at least in the coop mission. So maybe the full version can be played with this hardware too.

Best Regards,

Baddo.

When it comes to HW i put my fanboy hat aside.

If i was to upgrade earlier last year i would have gone AMD, since im upgrading soon im going intel C2D.

Thing is im not fully aware of prices atm (dont know how much the 64 athlons have dropped) but the c2d's offer a great "bang for buck" and beg for oc'ing.

If i were you i would wait and save instead of spending 300€+ on your current PC but this will depend on your other specs, if you have a good mobo and CPU it might still be worth it.

I had the same dilemma when the GF6's came out (stick with agp or buy new pci-e mobo, and card... and etc), im glad i kept my agp mobo and got a 6600gt agp card, it was a good move back then but not today.

I dont game that much anymore either (BIS software almost exclusively) and i definetly dont spend my hard earned on HW every year (or 2 years for that matter).

For me the time has come... whole new PC that will problably last 3+ years, unless game 2 comes out demanding even more than arma crazy_o.gif .

Because budget is an issue and stuff is overpriced in our little country, any acquisition is definitely thoughtful of the future, so the rig I'm getting is an Intel C2D EE6600 CPU, Asus P5N-32E SLI mobo, 2 x Kingston 1GB PC5300 667mhz DDR2 RAM, and an Asus 7950GT 512mb PCIe... Oh, and I'll get a new HDD to make a RAID-0 (I'll put the stuff that absolutely has to be safe on another rig's drive), so that system should last me a couple of years... I guess...

I've seen alot of webpages having for example different languages.

So instead of having seperate folders for different languages (let's say "en/index.php and de/index.php") they have an ending to the pagename, ie "index.php?lang=de" for example.

How do I define that last, "?lang=de"? Is that via mySQL (a fully dynamic text) or is it something else?

I've Googled, but no luck.

Hey guys, I was installing a game on my computer yester day and it was taking much longer than normal.  Finnally I looked in task manager and realized it had frozen.  I tried several times, but it keep freezing.  I tried restarting my computer but it wont start now.  It either crashes at the loading bar for windows XP or a few seconds after the power is on.  I was thinking my hardrive has failed.  Does anyone know what might be going on?

Do you have a spare Hard drive that you could install windows onto and back up files? Or a second computer, where you could put in the hard disk as a secondary disk and load up Windows from the primary disk and try to backup? Point is; back up all your data and try reinstalling windows. If you notice persistent crashing, then yes, its quite likely that the hard disk is dead. However, this could all be put down to a case of XP just ----ing up as usual, might as well see if your disk is working for the sake of €50-100. Just try and get your data backed up before its too late if the HD has really died.

If your really unsure, given the nature of laptops I would take it to a specialist whom can get the data off the old HDD

Not all laptops have room or cater for an additional HDD, in this case I would recommend being safe.

Do you have warrenty for it?

Its very simple to get data off a 2.5" drive. You can buy a USB to IDE adapter (make sure it support the 2.5" interface) and connect it to any computer and copy whatever you need.

This is how I do it for customers at work.

But how would I do that if my computer wont start?

You connect the HD from the faulty computer to a non-faulty computer whistle.gif

my plan was to be like:

C2D E6600

ASUS P5B Deluxe

kingston 1GB DDR2-800 x2(kind of waste for not OCing, but hell who cares if you are going to OC it anyway)

i only choose to add an 160 GB SATA hdd for main system as i already have 2 80GB IDE and a good old raid card as rubbish storage, might get another one later if i am going to run RAID to boost the system speed

and these already cost me around some 750 euros(well i just dont have the time and mood to have a walk in a computer center which some 100 ppl crown in a tight place)

now the only thing left is to have a good video card

I think a GF8800GTS should go nicely with that. It has the performance of a 7950GX2 but its cheaper and less noisy (I recommend XFX). A 400-450W PS is plenty enough for such a system.

I have the vanilla P5B(I have no use for the DeLuxe accessories), E6700 and 2x1GB Kingston ValueRAM (I believe it is 5300 or something).

Works like a clock, only faster.

hum i am not sure but that gts is quite expensive still, anyway the system is came with a 500-550W PSU so i wondered if its engouth for crossfire (if i ever get one)

oh and BTW how much is yours?

I'm using a 500w Mist PS (made on the same specs as Antec's). I'm also running 3 HDs in RAID-5 and a 7950GX2. Still plenty of reserves, so I'm sure your 500 or 550w is more than enough for a pair of Radeons.

The link for the PC isn't working. Can you copy+paste the specs?

woah, talk about info overload, the RAM and CPU would be fine, and the spec doesnt have any PSU info, which is very important.

Regardless I would say no - the Celeron and low amounts of RAM would be completely unable to exploit the high end graphics card. I would also say that the PSU bundled with such a system would be inadequate for the task.

EDIT: Now the link works...Check out something like this. Combine that with the G-Card and you have a really nice PC, although you may have to purchase a better PSU to go with the graphics card.
