I agree, my card (radeon 9800pro) is having huge problems with new games and that system is totally out of date.

Get something like x800-6800 or x1800-7800 with decent CPU to back it up.

better late than never, but denoir, i hate you tounge2.gif

although totalled by intended future upgrade system at Å1200, and its a beast of a pc... but for now spent Å100 on a new graphics card (7600 GT, 256MB, 560 Mhz) brilliant value, excellent performance for an AGP card - should keep me going till vista is released, a year has passed and all the inevitable bugs and security flaws are fixed, and the first few dx10 only games start appearing.

One of my friends who had a 9250 couldnt play Battlefield 2, or on a very poor quality setting. CPU is sorta slow too, but you may be able to get it running on low sad_o.gif

I bought a 120GB S-ATA drive today + an adapter for IDE to S-ATA, but I can't get it to work. I tried with both standard power, and S-ATA-power, with the adapter at different IDE-contacts at the MoBo, and with different plugs here and there, but nothing freaking works!

Any help there?

Best regards

JW

Youre gona need top of the line RAM, motherboard, PSU and cooling. I think its probably best just to get a Core2 and regular everything else, just as effective and probably cheaper

It's amazing how short sighted people can be though. I mean,

"Conclusion: The 4.1 GHz Dual Core Delivers Peak Performance For Pocket Change".

260W@idle, 500W@peak? The E6700 is 130W@idle, 150W@peak. Both numbers are measured at the wall - the sum of all components in the case. Energy is still too cheap for that to matter much, but it's a big difference.

I think they should also measure Watts per frame per second and see who wins.

The Pentium 4/D is terribly inefficient with heat and Electricity alright, another concern is that theres no guarntee that you'll get a chip that can hit those kind of speeds. If you an overclocker's CPU; the somewhat more expensive yet more efficient Opteron 165 would be a better bet, but as I said, the the Core 2 is your best bet

Both arrived in the mail today. When I pulled the processor box out I had another urge to upgrade my own personal computer but I decided that I would wait until the next "totally groundbreaking revolutionary processor" came out until I upgrade again.

Ok guys power and heat taken into consideration, I understand that if its drawing that much power it must be getting hot enough to fry eggs on. I will most likely go with an E 6600 ATM as its about the limit i am willing to spend on a chipset. Besides, I'm pretty sure that you can at least overclock it to run stock rates of the X6800 without any trouble.( not 100% sure but I'm gonna try) ok thanks for the help guys I owe you all one. notworthy.gif

2)MoBo is also very good (u cant miss with Asus)

3)Yup,Asus 6600GT is capable for SLI

4)Maybe,but for less money i can build better config-but again its your money,so..... wink_o.gif

Depends whether you can build it yourself, and do not mind ordering parts at different stores. I bought all my components at different stores (well, 3 or 4 different) and assembeld it myself, I think that saves anywhere from €100-€250 total, but I didn't buy a screen with it though (use my older one).

The config looks good, what is the response time on the 19" widescreen?

No, you can get much more performance for that money.

Here's one for €1800 from dustin. You can probably get it 20% cheaper or so from other places. Just a copy paste so forgive the lack of formatting:

INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6600 2.4GHZ 4MB 1066MHZ S-775

ASUS P5B P965 S-775 GBLAN ATX

DIMM DDR2 2GB PC2-5300 667MHZ KIT (2X1GB)

WESTERN DIGITAL RAPTOR 74GB 10000RPM SATA/150

ANTEC MIDITOWER P180 SILVER

SAPPHIRE RADEON X1900GT 256MB 2XDVI VIVO PCI-E ASUS TV-KORT MYCINEMA-P7131 FM PCI

HP W19 19# TFT WIDE TCO-99 SILVER

PLEXTOR DVD±R/RW PX-760SA 18X DL S-ATA

NESTEQ NÄTDEL NA5201 520W SUPER SILENT ATX12V V2.2

Whatever you choose, unless you want to go for a really really cheap system, you should get an Intel Core 2 CPU.  For benchmarks see:this article. And you don't want to go SLI, especially not with two older GFX cards. It's not worth the bigass loud PSU you'll have to buy and the crappy drivers that don't work half of the time. Buy a newer GFX and you'll get better performance, cheaper without the extra hassle.

Edit:

By the way, a recommendation would probably be to dump the 19" widescreen in favour of a 21" 3:4 like the Samsung Synchmaster 204b. You'll get loads of more screen space, no WS trouble for not much more money. And while you are at it, buy two of them. Moving from one monitor to a dual setup is the best upgrade one could do. I moved to two monitors (2x21" tft) about a year and a half ago and it's the best upgrade I have made. Ever. I'll never go back to one monitor. I'll get a third one as soon as there are good triple-display GFX boards.

Start with two screens. Most of the mid to high end gfx cards have dual DVI ports

Okay ive got a new set out after being advised to get AM2 instead of socekt 939.

So here it is;

AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4400 1MB - Å152.69 with VAT.

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=18246

ALIEN 2 CUSTOM GAMING CASE - Å30.08 with VAT.

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=17383

Kingston 1GB DDR2 PC2-6400 CL5 - Å113.92 WITH VAT.

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=23292

ASUS M2N32-SLI DLX nF590 Socket AM2 2x PCI-E SLi - Å123.90 WITH VAT.

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=23066

BFG GeForce 7900 GTX OC 512MB GDDR3 - Å305.49 WITH VAT.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7900_Series.html (3rd down i think)

Enermax Liberty 500W Modular PSU - Å69.90 WITH VAT.

http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=19634

TOTAL == Å795.98 WITH VAT.

What you think?

1. Is the RAM a bit pricy?

2. Would everything work well with each other?

3. Should i pay a bit more for a slightly higher power PSU?

Thanks.

1 Nah, it's pretty fair price. It was just me getting the quid mixed up before wink_o.gif ( whistle.gif )

2 Yeah, it should.

3 No, 500W should be enough. IIRC Enermax is a pretty good brand, but other high-quality PSUs that I would reccomend is Hiper, Thermaltake, Antec and some others (cba to write them all tounge2.gif)

I'm looking at getting a laptop for stuff and as much as I'd like to get a Core Duo the best video chip/card I've seen for that is the go7600. The mac book pro is a beautiful piece especially with bootcamp, but the inclusion of the Mobility x1600 is absolutely unacceptable. The Toshiba Qosmio has a Core Duo, a 7600, and is fairly not custom orderable. And I'm not going the Dellianware route either.

Additionally, for all the laptop's I've used previously I've never gotten used to the miniature keyboards, I use the numpad enough that having it seperate would be pretty much essential, and I'm usually short usb ports due to dongles, flash drives, external hard drives, mouse, and/or 'real' keyboard so a USB numpad would be impractical.

As such, this is what I'm looking at getting...

http://www.istnc.com/ProductCart/pc/configurePrd.asp?idproduct=93

Model : Clevo D900K

CPU : AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400 (to get the 1mb cache)

RAM : 2x1GB

Video : go7900GTX 512MB dedicated

HD : 1x 100GB SATA 7200 RPM (I'll go back and get a 2nd drive later)

WiFi : Intel A/B/G combo card (I don't have anything bluetooth, but I have B and need G support.

Power : Extra Battery (spare, just in case of meltdown)

OS : XP Pro

Warranty : 3 year + ADP (I've done laptop repairs for work before, yeah 20% is steep, but it's worth the piece of mind)

All that minus a $100 discount + shipping for ~$3500.

Any comments on the performance of X2's vs C2's?

C2's? Do you mean Core 2's?

Well, from what I've read/heard, apparantly, the Core 2's is way better, though, now when AMD halfed their prices on all CPUs, I'm not sure of wich one to choose (though, I wen't with a Core 2 for my configuration tounge2.gif)

I'm not sure wich one I'd reccomend, it's probably what yourself feel for.

And now, here's what I configured;

Chassi: ThermalTake Mozart Media Desktop w/ MediaLab

PSU: Hiper PSU Type R 580W

MoBo: Asus P5WD2 S775

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2,4Ghz

DDR: Corsair XMS2 2048MB (2x1024MB) 800Mhz DDR2

HD: Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10k RPM / 16MB cache

GFX: Asus GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 (560Mhz/1400mhz)

Sound: Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeMusic

CD/DVD: Sony Intern IDE DVD±RW 8x Slim (Black, slot-in)

Screen: LG 19" L1970HR, Ultraslim 2ms

Extra: Zalman CNPS8000 CPU-cooler s775

This lands on 18 754kr + a few 100kr for shipping, so let's say 19k kr, wich is about 2050euro.

Is that worth it?

just bought myself and installed a Leadtek Geforce 7600GT - Å123 and its a f**king steal for the money - 256mb, 560mhz and it runs everything today like a dream - I've had Doom 3, HL2 EP1 and Hitman BM at full speck, playing smooth as a badger.

flashpoint with full viewdistance and low settings gives about 10fps... but with full settings and a reasonable VD you get nice smooth framerates

aaah, the joy of AGP rofl.gif (i neeed to upgrade, but hey)

My desktop fried, so I'm gonna order parts for a new rig this coming week, I would like an opinion on the case though.

Intel C2D E6700

ASUS P5NSLI nForce 570 (Getting it until DFI releases their nForce 590 board in October/Nov (intend to do Quad SLI), this ASUS board is only 120)

eVGA 7950GX2

Corsair 2x1GB PC6400C4 (DDR2 800)

2x Plextor PX-755SA

MITSUMI Internal USB 2.0 digital card reader with Floppy Drive

The cases I am considering are:

Aspire X-Navigator

Aspire X-Gear

Rosewill Tu-153

Raidmax Scorpio 668WBP

Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000

Thermaltake Soprano VB1000BWS

I want something with good air circulation.
