Addictive Video Game playing

Recommended Posts

This post will incur wrath, but I'll post anyways, as an interesting subject matter should always be discussed.

In this case the importance of moderation, specifically in view of Armed Assault, which promises to erode our best judgement in regards to how many hours we'll be sucked in.

I think most peeps realize the importance of balancing 'play time' with exercise, family and social activities. However, some don't, hence this friendly reminder, especially to the young members of this community. As any OFP addict can attest, hours of lost time staring in a screen can lead to lost productivity, decreased social engagment and often times depression. We all know the feeling of going to bed at 3 am after having played CTI all night. While it's a darn good time, too much sitting in front of a screen killing things does affect the psyche and in the long run does not promote happiness or well being.

So, to conclude my post, I hope all of us will play responsibly,

especially those of us who are in relationships or have children.

Cheers!

Yes, i'm already prepairing for a big drop in my grades and increased inactivity as far as my non-existant social life is conserned... Its not that i'm anti-social.. I get along great when playing games and when on TS. Quite frankly I think its becasue most girls that I talk to are stupid, and they don't excite me smile_o.gif

That's it. The spammage meter increases one level. mad_o.gif

I don't leave my computer, and I get straight A's and have great relationships with my friends. Then again, I live on the far side of town with no transportation other than mom and/or feet (In winter at least. I could use my ATV, but it's illegal to ride them on the streets. Then again...). So really I have nothing to do here in the winter other than my comp. It'll prolly change in the summer.

Anyway, I'm also only 15, so I see my friends every day at school, so I have no choice but to socialise with them. I rarely see most of them outside of school, though, except for the ones who live near me. (and by near I mean relatively close)

Pointless post really...

If your so bad your life tanks because your playing a game you have problems that are def not related to the game itself.

Don't get me wrong... I play games for countless hours on end sometimes. But its called being responsable and knowing when you have to stop and take care of life. You have to know, and obay the limits. If you can't, then your simply not responsable and are not capable of takeing care of your life.

I think this posting makes perfect sense, especially with new people around

It is fair to warn others that this simulator is so fascinating and rich in possibilities that it may seriously affect your life

this is not to shy away players, it's just something to bear in mind all the time

I havent looked in the age of the community yet ..but i assume its not the same as in Bf or that stuff not to start a general discussion about the fans of different games and its status in the top list ...but i think most of the people around here are grown up at least mentally dont know about the physical part smile_o.gif

But i think its everyones part to care about his life and limits...

(btw everyone has his "hardcore" gaming phase at a specific time in live)

psssst. wink_o.gif I think he was joking. welcome.gif

I don't think he was.

Actually, for about four years, I did indeed spend 80+% of my free time behind OFP the minute school ended. Though another reason contrubuted to this I can tell you one thing:

"Je vriendenkring verplaatsen van de evenaar naar de randstad is moeilijke dan je denkt; je houdt een groot stuk kring over"

In english it comes down to the fact that "exchanging" friends from all over the world with friends close to your house, ones you can hang out with, is harder then you think. It also tells that you cannot "keep" the friends from over the world, it's MSN, or disco.

Nutz have a point, but he should instead talk about MMORPG games, not SP games with MP.

MMORPG games are truly addictive. So much in fact, it is not good for anybody's mental or physical health. And yet, this is only the beginning.

Experts have recently said they believe this wave of MMORPG addiction will continue for at least 15 years from now. With the nice looking MMORPG titles of today, imagine what it will look like in 2010 - 2020. We cannot even imagine, due to the bliztering speed of game technology development.

The phys-X card is hitting the market by 2006, and it will bring an oustanding level of realism into games. Imagine that kind of physics in a MMORPG. Who would want to leave a gorgeous looking online world with "more real than life" graphics and physics, where you can fly whenever and wherever you want, kick some serious butt with uber weapons, make real money in the game (Second Life and Project Entropia already do this), do naughty things with the most beatiful .. (you sick bastards!wink_o.gif.

Just a thought. Games are addictive, some more than others. I don't think SP games such as OFP 1985 and soon to come AA will ever be as addictive as MMORPG games are, though.

Very true post... but again it still comes down to knowing your limits and following them. I mean hell, if games comes out where you can earn a living playing them and you really enjoy them... whats wrong with living in the computer game if thats how you like it? As you said, MMORPGs are going to become even more addictive as their graphics and gameplay start to really improve.

Todays MMORPGs really aren't that addictive... games like WoW sucker people in, get them to play for a six months and then people realize theres nothing to do. However in the rather near future, true "live a second life" MMORPGs will likely revolutionize gameing and make actually living in an MMORPG possible to some degree. Where your not just playing the roll of a fantasy character, but actually living a second life... just inside a computer game. Now that would be addictive...

And lets also not forget true next gen technologies we might see in a few years. There is talk of lots of neat tech out there that will make gameing as we know it today... look like pong in a few years. Perhaps some forms of true 3d technology... where you will actually feel like you are really in the game world. Then we'll talk addictive...

Anyway, as an MMORPG player myself I do agree with you Hidden. They are much more addictive, and will only become more so in the future.

I guess i'm not capable of taking care of my life then... If I want to do something (like do great in certain classes) then I can, and with very little effort. However, if I feel that i'm taking a class that really has no benefit towards me (cough En101, Chem 101) then obviously I will not do well and / or put forth the effort to do well in such courses. Then again I do spend alot of time on the computer and the only thing I can blame for that is my interest for games like OFP and the vast possibilities with the game. And also games that you can mod without much problems. I suppose that I won't be as successful having bad or unfavorable grades. But, then again my philosophy is that grades are not a true measure of how "smart" somebody is. Its more like a measure of how somebody conforms to a system. And the purpose of that system is to catagorize and thus "grade" people in their career of learning. Most students i've noticed are so focused at getting good grades, they themselves forget the reason they go to school. School has turned from learning, and getting a degree or some credential, into a system used to classify and objectify people into submission. And the way they do that is through standardized testing and their grading policy. (which in the US it differes from place to place) Which by the way, what is tought in the school system is basically what the government wants students to learn. And sometimes, even a college professor can show bias and ignorance in teachings as well (I had one like that, everyday he would complain about Bush. It would only be a one-sided argument becasue most people in the class had un-favorable opinions of Bush. Which BTW I was neutral about.) Is it right to fail students who not only pass all their exams / tests but also excel in them? Just because a student does not do his / her homework? That by the way, should be more of a "tool" prior to a test or exam. Rather than another form of assesssing a student. I'm sorry, but I really fail to see how somebody can justify passing judgement on someone because of their "grades" I guess by reading this, you can tell that i'm not a "dumb-dumb" wink_o.gif

You talk about limits, but is it not the one that is doing the playing that sets an arbitrary limit? Sometimes in certain cases "limit-less" Maybe Game devs. Should assign daily limits to the games they make? For instance you go over the 8 hour limit, and the game shuts-off. You try to re-start the game.. And it will not start until the next day.

The fact that you decided to obliterate paragraphs from English grammar gives us a clue.

I see people making excuses for playing computer games.

Don't become self concious because people cannot understand that 'friends' on the computer are just as valid as friends in reality. If we are to achieve much higher levels of education and civilisation our societies must connect and share their knowledge. It is only open to a very small number of exchange students atm however we will may see schools based on the internet with students from many countries around the world.

The more we understand about cultures around the world the more open minded we become and the more civilised we can claim to be.

The education system is the most widely accepted way of accrediting individuals with a 'currency' of merit, with which they can 'afford' higher level positions in society. The education system is far from perfect, however if you have any common sense you will realise that you will have more opportunities if you suck it up and work hard than just lay back and feel confident that something you will enjoy will appear in front of you.

To avoid some shit job counting pieces of paper and then dividing the pieces of paper by the square root of your coffee mug you need to learn something that not many people know or that there will always be a demand for.

> I learned to operate machines that not many people know how to operate.

> I learned level 2 immediate medical care.

> I learned how to mix alcoholic drinks.

> I keep my body fit.

> I am constantly reading about something I know little about.

I realised at an early age that making people around you believe you are intelligent is a lot easier than being intelligent, as being intelligent is really a very primitive thing for us clever monkeys...

In the future I do think that a sizeable portion of society will regress from social contact and live in an alternate world, a world of different merit and more complex problems. The 'matrix' of modern communications in the future.

However at the moment you need to focus on the reality that if you want to have money to buy a new PC and to get a boyfriend/girlfriend you need to work in the ways society intended you to work. You need to have a knowledge of the language people use, a knowledge of what people value and the

ability to think. Otherwise you might find yourself on the till at Asda.

Hope my post was relevant.

I ...but i think most of the people around here are grown up at least mentally )

Thats rude, I am here since 2001 and I expect you to know me better. If you werent capable to learn to know me yet then I dont know whether friendship is the right word for us two.

So boy, you better learn it: I am far from being a mental grown up. I am mentally retired: always late to reply, always the last to know, all the time misinformed and majorly superficial!

One of my best friends got WoW a while ago. I didn't bother cause well I didnt want to waste all my money on subscription. Anyway, it got to a stage where he kept on talking about it all the time, and kept on playing it. I came around to his house one day and he showed me it. The conversation went like this:

"Where are you going?"

"Don't know"

"Why are you dueling with that random person?"

"Because its fun"

"Does your character benefit from dueling?"

"No"

"So why do you keep doing it?"

"Dunno"

"Why are you mining ore?"

"So I can make items to sell"

"What are you going to do with the money?"

"Dunno"

And so it went on and on. Eventually I talked him out of playing it. I felt like I was trying to talk a heroin addict out of doing drugs, it was ridiculous. My friends are under strict orders to shoot me if I start playing MMORPGs

lol, damn.... That sounds like my brother.... He just got the game last week and has been playing it since.... I always ask "wtf are you doing" and he says "killing stuff" and then i say "why" and he says "so I can become a level 60" and then I say "what level are you now" and he says "25, I was a 23 yesterday" and so I say "so in one day it takes you to rise 2 levels, don't you think it'll take quite a bit of time to become a level 60huh.gif" and he says "shut-up you're stupid" and then I just walk out and go into my room. smile_o.gif

It's quiet an interesting thing the thread-creater speaks about.

I think the best example is not OFP, but WoW. When WoW came out, I sat the first weekend 12 hours per day behind the computer, leaving everything around me alone.

I mean, I met many new people and talked to them, but that wasn't anything special. You stay with some because you think they're nice .... but at some point I was, how can I say...disgusted, because it didn't matter WHEN I came online, they were online ALL THE TIME. And I thought: What about your social life?

Actually my gaming life has always taken a bigger hit than my real life thanks to OFP.

AA won't be any different.

I've bought so many games for the pc and ps-2 that I haven't finished, I can't believe it.

Games like GTA vice city, GTA san/for ps2 and pc will probably never be completed.

I would really like to finish Vampire bloodlines , Deus Ex2 and swat 4........oh well ,least got to see the end of doom3 and far cry ...FINALLY!
