Somehow looks weird huh.gif

Will check out the demo...

Quote[/b] ]ALFA: Antiterror is a turn based tactical combat simulator that lets the player control this special operations force through a four episode campaign based on the real life experiences of former ALFA members from 1984 to 2001. This huge demo allows you to try out The Officer's Story mission, 5 single-player operations, and also includes 7 multiplayer maps with 2 modes, hotseat and LAN

Sharp-looking game. I was never one for turn-based games(doesn't that sort of cancel out the "realistic" aspects they're striving for?), but will try it out.

Looking at some of the screenshots.....Are those Llauma's heads?

Ah, cool. Saw this a couple days ago on Filefront, but was looking for more mirrors, since the >1gb filesize meant needing a Fastpass subscription.

Must check if battlelan allows that game to be played over the 'net. yay.gif

I hope not 'cause that would look quite bad unless they somehow managed to steal my unreleased ones.

I'm not that impressed by how it looks. Sure a game doesn't have to use to highest poly models and resolutions but at least they could try to make the best of what they have.

I saw it yesterday on gamershell but it doesnt look very interesting to me, mostly because of the turn based style, i always confuse it with this other budget  game that aparently is being made by 5 developers, yes 5 people crazy_o.gif .

edit:

Their site in ok http://www.byte.sk/, i think they could do an ok game if they had a bigger team and a good publisher smile_o.gif .

Cor! 12,000-some files and 2.4gb unpacked! crazy_o.gif

edit: And I see why now. No packaging up of files. No encryption. No nothing. Everything is open. .skel files, .skin files, lua scripts, textures, everything is completely open. Should be fun to screw around with. tounge2.gif

Will try it out after finals mid-december. Definitely don't need a distraction like that now...but if the gameplay's like the original X-com...oh yeah baby pistols.gif

*edit* There's also a link to a trailer pretty much hidden in the site. Downloading, will watch tomorrow.

Oh for crying out loud. "Alfa Project Exception". Then a bunch of gobbledygook that I'm assuming would be cyrillic if I had the right language files. Argh.

edit:

Switched of hardware vertex processing in the .cfg and it loaded up fine.

Looks pretty good, but seems rather inconsistent,performance-wise. Basically it runs fine except when there are units on-screen. o_O At least on my system.

Gameplay is not so much your classic X-Com turn-based, but more like Combat Mission and Laser Squad Nemesis' system of planning your moves and having them played out simultaneously in 10-second chunks. It's not too bad, but the interface can be a little clunky. I don't particularly like the camera movement, either.

But, it has potential.

What kind of units are available in the demo? If I can make mechanized Russian forces I'll be happy.

From what I've seen, the only units you get to actually play as are various spec ops. In the single player stuff it's Specnaz, and there are other options when playing multi, like SAS, Delta, GSG-9, etc.

After playing for a bit, I gotta say. This game is frigging brutal. Pretty cool, though, so far. The engagements take place in relatively sizeable environments, graphics are pretty good, sounds are serviceable. But yeah. Brutally difficult, at least that's my initial take.

Gotta say, while the screenshots do look a bit strange, the trailer looks pretty good.

I would be more interested if it was'nt turn-based. I think I'll stick to Act of War. I just signed up for the closed beta testing of the expansion-pack.

the only reason I'm interested is because it is turn based. I don't like RTS's much at all, and the only strategy game that ever had me hooked like crack was X-com.

The game isn't bad, actually. It suits my anal/tactical side :P Although it has its interface faults that would make playing it that little bit easier/more fun.

Turn Based combat is actually quite good, wouldn't have downloaded it if it wasn't, actions are decided upon in orders phase and then played out in 10 seconds [variable] with no intervention from player.

Anyone fancy arranging a battlelan game? Would like to see it on MPlayer with other humans.

I have to say that I'm really enjoying this game. I was a fan of Combat Mission when it came out, but didn't invest that time I'd like to have with the 2 other versions. I also really wanted a more modern version on a smaller scale and it looks like I found it.

Some things bother me about the interface, the camera angles and controls, and the orders menu, but overall I really like this a lot for several reasons.

1. It's not WW2.

2. It's not RTS.

3. It's not "Americanized" even if it does seem to have US units for MP.

4. It hasn't been dumbed down or "balanced".

5. If you make stupid decisions you will lose horribly.

6. You can customize your units loadouts similar to the system used in OFP with the addition of helmets and armor.

7. I has more depth as far as stats than I'd ever need, but it's nice to know that it's all there from dexterity, stealth, etc.

I know some people will have issues with it, and I can't say how accurate any of it is, but for me it's a small scale modern clone of the Combat series and I've been wanting something like that for a long time.

Also like it was mentioned, everything in the demo is open, so missions could be edited, textures replaced, units edited, etc etc.

I'll actually purchase this game and I haven't bought a PC game in months upon months.

Aparently a new demo is out, weighting around 360MB wich is much more reasonable than the previous 1 gig+ one, im downloading from gamershell smile_o.gif .

This demo's smaller for a reason - it misses out quite alot of singleplayer and multiplayer maps/missions. If you can do the waiting, the gig or so version is better.

Just tried the big demo. I'm pretty impressed - it definately fills a neglected genre. My only problem with it is that it's so freaking hard! The first campaign mission is OK, but everything else I've played I've suffered horrific losses in.

I kinda like it but the interface is a bit of a pain, the presentation, menus, graphics and sound are nice but the interface could definetly be improved, i have to mess with the options and settings a bit more to see if i can take the challenge of completing it. It ran a bit sluggish untill i turned off that post filter thing, now its running well at 1280x1024 resolution smile_o.gif .

Having just played a 40 minute game with a friend, i can say this game for me at least is a definite purchase (Note, the 300mb demo, not the 1gb version).

the reasons why

Individual AI

Well i wasn't expecting the best, but what i found was impressive, each soldier used to the best of his ability cover, and trying to hide, one instance i ordered them to fire, so he leaned to the side whilst crouching and began firing through a fence (the ones with bars, not a steel plate or anything) automatically.

another instance when i ordered my men to assault a building, instead of going the long way around, he took it upon himself to climb over the fence.

climb6tx.jpg

Another instance whilst in the defence of a high rise building (most likely flats) an spetsnaz operative snuck upstairs but i had a single soldier on sentry, he then proceeded to run around the corner and him and the spetsnaz operative had a fire fight as each soldier popped out of the corner to hastily fire and quickly retreat behind cover again (was a strafing style manouver).

Detail

The world environment is well done and varied the textures are quite high resolution and are detailed, the environments themselves vary all within the same map, from destroyed buildings to blown out rail yards with debris and craters dotted about with tree's and foilage for stealthy tactics, and on occasion the odd destroyed car or two.

Ballistics

Referring to the infantryman who took it upon himself to climb over the fence, he eventually reached his target in the house, fired a burst into the enemy's head, but i noticed upon closer inspection that a round deflected upwards from the enemy's reinforced kevlar helmet and struck the cieling, the other two however were fatal (he was using a H&K G36)

Physics

I noticed that when soldiers die ragdoll or at least a version of kicks in as one of my men was shot in the chest, and as he fell down a series of steps his body moved and twisted appropriately
