What can we expect from the new engine?

Recommended Posts

They had four years time to completely overhaul the engine and I haven't seen any insane graphics on the ArmA screenshots that would afford a cell processor.

Ahum, they are also working on Game2 and working hard get OFP on the xbox and this is done by a rather small team. whistle.gif

Yes, but they are all based on practically the same engine. It all started with the poseidon engine and it's all based on that same engine (more or less I guess).

If you ran OFP on the same settings as you used on your old system it would run as well as it did before (or rather much better). But you really shouldn't expect being able to max out everything (esp. terrain detail & view distance) on any currently available computer.

Why not? BIS is not just going to release an addon. They had four years time to completely overhaul the engine and I haven't seen any insane graphics on the ArmA screenshots that would afford a cell processor. I bet you will be surprised how well it runs on a half decent machine. I mean Doom3, HL2, Far Cry or even BF2 run smoother than OFP on my machine.

It's sure a different issue with The-game-formerly-known-as-Operation-Flashpoint-2 but we will have enough time to upgrade our machines until that release.

On my machine I have the same problem, and when I turn on the DXDLL on my 6800GT, goodbye FPS.

I don't think it likes DX9 cards, seeing as its a DX8 game (DXDLL only added partial 8.1 support before you get smart assish on me about that!wink_o.gif.

Oh and apparently the engine has been pretty much entirely recoded. What do you think they were doing for these 4 years? That's why we didn't hear anything for so long because they wanted to get to respectable level before going public with it, and to please the fans with all the fixes and engine improvements we've been asking for for so long.

I have faith in BIS, look at how nicely VBS1 plays compared to OFP1... and that's a more advanced version of the engine, with larger distance draw, higher poly models and can support masses more units with hardly any performance issues at all!

If it's possible to improve it so much for a lightly modified (well in comparison) engine, imagine how nicely the overhauled engine will play!

Oh and I don't think they're going for the "WOAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!" factor with Armed Assault. I see it more of a thank you to the community, and to gear us up for the way the engine will work so we can just jump right into modding the true sequel.

Yes, I read somewhere they started with improving the old engine and ended (ok, not yet) with a complete new engine for game 2.

And ArmA is supposed to be something inbetween. I've read we will be able to use all the nice OFP-Addons with a little tweaking so it can't be so far away from Poseidon. And honestly, you've seen the screenshots from ArmA - this is not a complete new game, it's still good old OFP but with really nice improvements. Indeed it's a big present for the community because it looks like it has everything we ever wanted for OFP.

I won't complain about OFP v1.96 graphics. I play @ 1280x1024, Aniso4x and 2500m view distance and I find the overall display good enough, and very good when I play with improved islands and Mods such as FFxUR and others.

Regarding ArmA, I mostly wait for a better net code (including Jip), more options but more simple and straightforward configuration (including server), more realistic (weapons, vehicles, sounds), and a better (hopefully almost automatic) management and downloads of addons ... wink_o.gif

Sounds like a wish list, please, BIS makes it comes (at least partially) true.

Thats strange, i have a similar rig, play 1280x1024 75hz, 16x AF 4X AA, view to 1500m and I have a lousy performance if I turn on the DXDLL and sometime at mods like FFUR etc.

@Totala: You have good porformance with DXDLL too?

I have a A64 3200@2700(300HTT), 1Gb GsKill @ 300Mhz, SATA RAID 0 and a 6800GT @430/1150

Maybe 4X AA does not help in your case. Anyway, the graphic configuration of OFP has so (too) many parameters to play with so that it is difficult to compare performances  confused_o.gif

This is the reason why I hope that ArmA will have a single and simple interface to setup such parameters  wink_o.gif

With a DX9 engine and all the optimizations from the Xbox ver, I hope that the last generation of grafic cards run all things fluid.

Today at vbs resources I noticed vids showing the ability to move around planes freely whilst moving. So i'd guess that this will be in AA. Also the ability in MP to have an editor ish like interface and spawn units with WP, like a dungeon master. biggrin_o.gif Lord pray these are in AA.

Yeah I saw those 3 vids too, it's like a dream come true.  notworthy.gif

Freely move around on transport trucks, engage enemy from cargo positions of light vehicles, move on and off transport vehicles in a realistic manner, shoot out of hatches, shoot from the turned out position.

Best of all, NO scripting involved, it's a core update.

You are disappointed with the graphic ability on a 4 year old game compared with brand new ones!?  confused_o.gif

Not only that. He's disappointed that the 4 year old game only renders 10 km and 200 enemies while the new games render 1 km and 20 enemies.

I think you misunderstood my post smile_o.gif

I was talking about how ofp runs shoddy even at lowest settings with a fairly high-end system, which hopefully will change with Armed Assault.

I can't wait to see ofp in directx9, that would kick ass. However, I am looking more forward to the functional side of graphics-hopefully i will be able to jack up the viewdistance from my usual 500-900m up to something higher. That would make flying missios sweet smile_o.gif

Speaking of flying, I wonder if some of the vehicle physics coding would be changed? Will chopper and physics objects still act like jumping beans when they are shot down in ArA? Maybe we can finally see some cool crashes smile_o.gif

It's the only game I'm buying this year! Can't wait.. looking forward to not getting stuck on the corner of houses inlove.gif

Join in progress.

Multiple weapons per vehicle (from VBS)

Possibly MCAR (VBS has this I think)

Bump mapping and pixel shaders (model will need extra alpha channels to take advantage - I personally think paa/pac have been ditched in favour of tga/jpg to accomplish this - I hope so)

I think these things alone make it worth having.

It's amazing that the AA forum only has 1/10th the replies of The OFP2 forum.

AA seems like a "perfect" version of OFP, which I already know will run well on my PC. Join in progress, moving in vehicles, waves, what more could you ask for? I'm really excited about AA, moreso than OFP2 right now.

I dont know about Armed Assault. Dynamic grass exists already in every new game. Dynamic water is made allready in many new game. I think Armed Assault will be somethink like Battlefiel 1,3 or Operation typhoon rising 1,5. Nothing new sad_o.gif

joint ops its just an arcadish game, not a simulation, the armed assault will be a way better than the other games because u dont need to shoot five bullets for 1 kill. and the weapons have a realistic fire rate and alot of such things u couldnt finnd in other game.

But anyway its like we are buying OFP update.... Like in VBS1.

With only new water, grass, Ai, 1 island, shadows, lightning and realistic bullet rates.

Do we really need anything else? With the upgraded engine, we will have many many things to work with as an editing community, and this game gives SO much more a stronger foundation then arcadey P.o.S like BF and JOPS.

OFP1 offers more to the player then BF2, HL2, and Doom 3 do today, 4 years later. This is just a improvement on the things the game lacked from before, and since i still play OFP every single day (when I don't have school to contend with), I know that Armed Assault will be a welcome addition to my game collection.

The only problems OFP1 had, imo, were aesthetically. The sounds were tacky, and had no real dynamic sound to speak of. The graphics are dated with their low resolution textures, low polygon models and lack of lighting. Most, if not all, of these issues will be fixed with ArAs so then, imo, we will have a perfect game. wink_o.gif

Anyway, I got to make myself a sandwich....

Take Care,

Cat

Personally I think ArmA won't be much different from OFP...

It's exactly what it's described to be, an OFP 1.5.. much better graphics, new Campaign and story, new vehicles, DirectX, better effects, physics, vehicle performance, JIP, and other stuff.

Engine wise, I don't think ArmA will be much different from OFP...but more things are possible now with the things that have changed.

... and colision detection improvements wink_o.gif , if it gets rid of those shakey/jumpy movements and clipping problems plus better interaction with buildings and more "solid" walls it will improve gameplay alot, i think a improved flashpoint will still be very unique compared with the "rest", the basic features, possibilities and size of OFP are yet to be met or surpassed, with some gameplay improvements and a facewash this game will go one step closer to perfection, i want it now! inlove.gif .
