Vehicle sounds extremely low

Recommended Posts

"Q: I can hears footsteps and other sound from very large distances. This is annoying. What can I do? I have SoundBlaster Live of other EAX capable card.

A: This problem is probably caused by incorrect EAX calculation in large environments. Our communication with Creative Labs suggests it will be probably fixed

in next driver release for SB Live. Until it is fixed, you may want to disable EAX. Some users (mostly having SBLive 5.1) are able to use HW 3D acceleration, some have to disable even 3D acceleration to get around this bug."

I have kind of the opposite problem. I can hear everything just fine except vehicle sounds (engine sound, moving turrets, ricochets from armored vehicles etc). I need to be like 10m from a tank to be able to be able to hear it's engine which is kind of annoying.

I can't remember having this problem the last time I played the game (perhaps a year ago) and the only thing that's changed is that I'm now using the 1.96 patch. I guess I could just reinstall the game and don't apply the 1.96 patch, but I don't want to revert to an older version of the game if there's a fix for this problem.

So.. Anyone had this problem before and know how to solve it?

If you want troubleshooting help the minimum required from yourself is to explain the problem (as you've done) and to list your system specs along with driver versions smile_o.gif

ASUS A7V KT333 (using onboard AC97 sound)

Athlon 2100+

768MB RAM

GeForce 4600 Ti (nvidia reference drivers 66.93 )

Windows XP SP2

DirectX 9.0c

Tested OFP with different sound settings:

- No hardware, no EAX:

Can hear everything except vehicle sounds fine. Sounds originating from a vehicle cannot be heard until you are very close to the source.

- Hardware, no EAX:

Same as above

- Hardware, EAX:

Can hear everything fine but vehicle sounds are mono, not stereo.

And yes, I realize the onboard sound is a P.O.S. but it works fine in all other games as well as previous versions of OFP...

What drivers are you using for the soundcard?

The package is called CMI8738_WDM_0639XP and I guess they are generic drivers for the C-media CMI8738 audio controller.

I can't use ASUS' drivers since voice recording (through microphone) refuses to work with them.

They're from Feb 2004 it seem, I'd suggest giving the realtek ones a try here.

Do you have the latest via drivers installed for your motherboard?

Can I really use Realtek drivers for an ASUS motherboard?

Anyway, I use the VIA 4in1-drivers but not the latest version. I was recommended not to use the latest since my motherboard is quite old so I'm using version 4.43 of the drivers.

I'm pretty sure that if your soundcard/network adaptor are generic realtek you can use realtek's drivers, I have an MSI Nforce2 motherboard which has AC97 onboard sound and I used realtek's drivers no problem. Be sure to completely remove the old sound driver installation before installing the realtek drivers smile_o.gif

Tried the Realtek drivers but it was just as if I didn't have any drivers at all, they simply weren't recognized. I'm gonna try the old ASUS drivers just to see if it works. I can do without Skype for a few weeks while playing OFP. ;)

Edit:

The sound problem is still there when using the ASUS drivers.. sad_o.gif

Got the same problem with ASUS A8n SLI (nfroce4)

I can't hear vehicles when I'm driving them or they are somewhere nearby.. but when I change view to TPP and then back to FPP it's OK.

I'm using newest drivers for Realtek sound cards and drivers for nvidia4 chipset..

Perhaps I'll try OFP with my old SB Live! 5.1 ... but I'm sure there is some way to run properly OFP at AC97...
