Vietnam: The Experience OFP

Recommended Posts

Looking very nice indeed but I have one wish! Thats the major thing I would like you pay very great focus on it and thats: FPS

Sure you can make very realistic looking jungles in OFP but is it really FUN to play with 15 fps? rock.gif

Same goes for the units. No point in making extra detailed textures&models when all it causes is extreme fps drop. I want to be able to make missions with these units not just use them for combat photography.

Old NP2 units are perfect. Not so good looking as newer units but for christ sakes when I can place 5 full squads of them on the map and still play unlike with most newer addons, Im happy.

If you absolutely want to make thick jungle with lots of undergrowth then make the islands small. Not larger than Everon or Malden because, lets face it, does anybody REALLY need the area sized of Tonal for ONE mission?

Is there really anything so good about large maps that its worth the awfull fps drop?

Now about other more minor wishes.

NVA T-54, the tank that first crashed through the gates in Saigon. RHS T-55 is nice and they have let other mod teams to use them. Other thing conserning NVA armor is the T-34. The one NVA had was with 85mm gun. Its waaayyyy different that the one with 76mm gun.

And ofcourse M-48 Patton would be nice as it was a major US tank in that war.

Also some of the aircraft is somewhat wierd. I dont think the NVA ever used Il-28 Beagle in that war? Did they even have those? rock.gif Other wierd choise is the MiG-19 Farmer. Sure NVA had them but still is it worth the trouble to make on just to represent a plane that was quite rare in the war? I think NVA mainly flew MiG-21 Fishbed and MiG-17 Fresco.

Also F-86 Sabre wasnt used by USAF in Vietnam. All they had was F-100 Super Sabres. Not sure though if South-Vietnam used them.

Now my last wish would be: water buffalo! biggrin_o.gif

You know the big black animal with huge horns that curve downwards?

They are brobably the most famous animals of the Vietnam war and were used by locals ALOT in farming work.

Now that my wish list is done I would like to wish you good luck in your project that seems to be doing great atleast for now. wink_o.gif

I do. I'm using areas all over the excellent Phouc Tuy Province for a mission involving a downed pilot's mission to return to his own lines. A large island gives many possibilities for mission makers.

Dak Seang is huge and has very dense foliage, but the trick is just make more fog in missions. If you are in a dense jungle with dense foliage, you won't be able to see more than 50 feet in front of you anyways smile_o.gif

For some reason to me, vietnam just isn't vietnam if there isn't miserably dense tropical jungles tounge_o.gifbiggrin_o.gif

Hi, this island looks very good; i fixed some textures of the TOW CH-34 (letters, numbers & inscriptions) that could help but i think that i should tell that to some TOW member. What i like of this island is that it could serve for recreate a kind of Haiti terrain, villages or something like that; there the USMCBeta3 by Suchei will fit at the perfucktion. We need some Haiti in our lives >>;-) let's cu

Hi, i mean... that this island could also serve for play missions in a terrain with buildings and areas closer to as Haiti is; those Haitians sold out almost all they'r trees, yeah... i know... but well, this island could serve for recreate that; Haiti. That's what i wanted to say, & that it looks very good; only that.

P.D: I miss your kicks Lis, no one gave me so good kicks as those from your ENTER Key >>;-) take care of all those b.. TJO!, the ppl in the OFPEC mIRC channel. Let's cu

Hi, what i wanted to say it's that This looks like as an Haitian street; there'r now the Marines also. The USMCBeta3 that i re-retextured will fit into the island ground textures because they don't look green as the Ngova textures, they look almost as well as the AAO grass textures; there the real Marpat colours work as camo; in Nogova they don't.

This island not will only serve for make missions in asiatic countrys like Nam, Indonesia, Laos or Cambodia. It could also serve to make some convoy escort missions as the ppl it's doing now in Haiti; urban areas patrols & many other kind of missions. Sure that with that distance between buildings the AI's must walk arround & drive arround much better than in for example... Tonal, there there's few distance between buildings & u could shave u, eat your dinner, clean your teeth, take a leak & maybe when u came back... the AI's went to where u sent 'em; if u don't loose that "2: Negative" message. Anyway, i like this island & those objects & buildings; 3FWX objects/buildings & Mapfact objects/buildings could help to represent some facilityes. & about the TAG... i can't say nothin', but in Irak they still chopping off the hands of the thiefs. Let's cu

I see some ilo undergrowth objects in those pictures. I really hope they'll have view/geo lods and work well with AI. One of my main problems with some 'Nam islands that I've played with is that there is sometimes an overuse of those 'see through' undergrowth objects. In my experience, the player thinks they're behind concealment, while the AI sees right through it and nails you in the head from hundreds of meters out. While I understand that these reductions are usually to combat lag, gameplay suffers. If there are too many AI problems, I'll probably go back to Ia Drang like I usually do. It may not look the hottest, but it has the best playing 'vietnam jungle' battles so far in my book.

RE The 'invisible huts': When you were fighting a village battle, AI could target/shoot you from one side of the hut to the other, without LOS. It made village battles more than a little annoying. If you do include the old huts/hut objects, I'd love to see them fixed.

Really looking forward to all the new units, vehicles, and weapons. I'd love to see some old NP2 weapons updated with higher quality models and textures. The M16A1 is getting a bit long in the tooth...

Here's to a new 'king' of vietnam islands/mods,

~The Captain

Hi,

If I remember correctly, his M16's/Car-15's were based on M16A2's/M4's, and have an A2 style rear sight. I only checked an older release, though. I would much prefer if the M16 and XM in VTE use an A1 style body.

Also, if you guys are using JAM, please, please replace/override the 5.56mm machinegun sound as used in the pack. Sounds absolutely awful, and ruins the Stoner for me. smile_o.gif (It's much, much, much too meaty for a 5.56. I can provide video of a stoner upon request to whoever on the team needs it.)

(<-- Big stoner fan)

Best,

~Steve

Are you guys going to include some standard napalm effects? It'd be great if it were officially included in the package to reduce the addon numbers needed for 3rd party missions for your mod.

AFAIK shoguns napalm effects are the best I've seen up to now...

you know I tried really hard to learn modelling and it took me many, nights, many packs of smokes, many bottles of booze and beer and I totally lost my nerve after all the tutorials I read and still came out with nothing, nada.

I gave it a try. sad to see 5 nam teams working on different projects when they could do one together and actually finish it. all the stuff is looking so great and it makes me loose it when I see them going down the drain one by one.

now I said it out loud... so shoot me if you like

...click...clickclick...*Damn! it's empty* Just kidding buddy biggrin_o.gif

It's already good that you understand how much work it takes to make things. Don't worry some things will eventually get released. It just needs that oh so preacious time that most people are unaware of. Long hours and a lot of free time down the drain. And in the end if you stick with it, it will all be worth doing. And people see this when they get close to finishing their projects. And that's when they get really stuck into it. But untill then, the people making things for the comunity need help, may that be in many forms ranging from mental support to fysical help in creating their stuff. So here's me saying to the guys of this mod, to hang in there and stick with it. You will get there in the end. It looks good from what i have seen. smile_o.gif

FINALLY! A sheridan! Man I have been waiting a long time for one of those. Could I also suggest some engineer vehicles, possibly for some mine clearing missions? On the m-60 tank, all you'd have to do is whack the main gun off @about two feet from the breech, and mount a dozer blade on the front. And (as if enough suggestions aren't pouring in) howsabout a 'nam Pibber (so I don't have to load a BIS one up w/ Vietnam-style infantry, cause homie can't script).

Looks awesome, can't wait to see the thick-as hell jungle.
