Help for the New Guy

Recommended Posts

Let me start by saying that I have really enjoyed the single player demo.  Although I am new to OFP, I've played similar games especially Rogue Spear.  I'm a big fan of RedStorm for CQB but for military ops I like your interface and the open area look and feel.  Most of my questions have to do with the differences with the Demo.

Questions .....

1) Versions: How can determined what version I have?   I have a US version that I purchased yesterday (Jan '02) in US.  What upgrades are applicable for this version?

2)Saving / Loading Games:  Whenever I save or load, it takes about 40 seconds.  The Demo only took a few seconds and the file sizes are about the same.

3)Difficulty:  I know you have alot of posts for this, but I was wondering if you changed the AI between the Demo and the real deal.  Because in the Demo (did I mention that I played this a number of times), I can pretty much go solo and take out the enemy including stealling tanks but when I play the ambush mission on the OFP, most of my squad can't even make it to the Houdan with getting killed much less myself.

4) Tracer Rounds:  Is there anyway to turn those on in the real game.  This was cool in the demo and would definately help on the difficulty issue.    It was a the open cross with the moving point.

5) Graphics detail:  I  have an old graphics card but again, comparing to the Demo, I don't see the ememy as well I even have it at a higher resolution on the real game.  Even at long distances I was able to see the enemy better and when I hit him the blood was more evident.

thanks for your time.

You should have version 1.20, see the pic below to identify your version

We're now on 1.40 so you have a bit of catching up to do, I hope your connection is up to some serious weight as you have roughly 40mb of downloading to do, as a bonus though you'll get lots of new weapons/vehicles to play with smile.gif

Ultimate Upgrade 3

Ultimate Upgrade 4

Hmm not sure about this one, how much RAM do you have? How much free hard drive space do you have? Have you defragged recently?

They've played around with the AI in the patches since the final release, 1.30 was deemed by some to be too difficulty, 1.40 is now at the stage where there is regular AI and a "super" AI option should you be finding things too easy smile.gif

These can be turned off or on in the difficulty options smile.gif

Specifically what graphics card do you have?

1. It reads on the main menu screen, and in your case the version is 1.20, so you'll have to download Ultimate Upgrade 3 to upgrade to 1.30 (or buy Gold Upgrade) and the 1.40 patch (Ultimate Upgrade 4?).

4. In version 1.30 you can turn them off.

Thanks for your comments. Placebo, you can of course ignore any emails I sent you about not be able to post.

Back to business.

1) Got the Version info and the downloads. I'll get updated tonight and see what I have been missing.

2) I've got an AMD 900Mhz machine with 128MB RAM and about 13GB free on the HD. I will check the fragmentation, but I think the demo would be trashing too if my disk was fragmented.

3&4) Will check them out tonight.

5) As for the graphics card I am ashamed a little to admit that I still have the TNT2 (16MB I think) that came with my machine. Go ahead and flame away but the Demo looks great on 640x480 biggrin.gif w/ most of the Advance Video stuff turned way down. I'm looking at a couple of Xtasy Cards (GeForce 2 32MB or 64MB AGP) will that do your game justice. Would this be affecting the save and load times as well?

I'm getting there.

128MB ram is about the absolute minimum with Opf, you really could do with doubling that if at all possible, I don't know if that is what's affecting your saving but the rest of the game would benefit.

A GF2 in whatever form should run Opf very nicely, I could be wrong but I don't think your current gfx card has anything to do with the slow saving problem smile.gif
