VATICAN CITY (CNN) -- Pope John Paul II was given the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church late Thursday night as his health deteriorated, a Vatican source has told CNN.

The pope is suffering from a high fever caused by a urinary tract infection, the Vatican confirmed Thursday -- one day after revealing he had been put on a nasal feeding tube for nutrition

The pope is taking antibiotics, a Vatican spokesman said.

Joaquin Navarro-Valls said in a statement released Wednesday: "To improve his calorific intake and promote an efficient recovery of his strength, nutrition via the positioning of a nasal-gastric tube has begun."

The pope underwent a tracheotomy February 24 and still has a tube inserted in his windpipe to help his breathing.

Earlier Wednesday, the pope appeared at his studio window and blessed the thousands of faithful in St. Peter's Square.

He appeared alert during the four-minute appearance, which drew cheers from the crowd gathered beneath his window.

He raised his hand in blessing and made the sign of the cross as a Vatican official read greetings and prayers.

A microphone was raised to his face as he tried to speak, but the words were not clear.

The pope has spent a total of 28 days in two stints at Gemelli hospital in Rome in the past two months.

Nicola Cerbino, a spokesman at the hospital, said Wednesday that there was no plan to hospitalize the pope.

On Monday the pope skipped the post-Easter Angelus prayer for the first time in his 26-year papacy.

The 84-year-old pope suffers from a number of chronic illnesses, including crippling hip and knee ailments, and Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder that can make breathing difficult.

Throughout his various illnesses and brushes with death, even after the assassination attempt against him in 1981, the pope always said his life was in God's hands.

I doubt anyone knows anything about the real man other then what he has done as a pope so how can this not be about religion? I disagree with the Vatican in many subjects but with the enormous amount of power they got it could have been much worse so I guess I shouldn't complain.

He wasn't a great man.. He was a pope which means that he could have sacrificed 100 people each morning and millions of people would still have admired him more than anything.

As someone who is in my christian denomination about as doctrinally opposite the pope as you can get, I still say that I believe God raised up Karol Wojtyla and inspired him to do a great work among all nations.

Has there been difficulties during the time that he's led the Roman Catholic church? Of course, but he has also been at the forefront of ecclesiastically denouncing and correcting those issues. Not since the early days of the church has any pope afaik done so much to reach out to, and assist the Christian, Jewish, and Moslem communities, while striving to bring peace to even the atheist nations of communism.

He has been blessed with remarkable fortitude and endurance, and has symbolically and doctrinally stood firm against apathy, ambiguity, and antagonism. His defiance of the communist regimes gave later leaders the ammo to stand against the Evil Empire.

He has also been unafraid to voice his convictions, and disapproval of the ambiguious era one commentator referred to as "Slouching towards Gomorrah". In discussing the assasination attempt of a couple decades ago (where he previously recieved last rites) he commented that he felt that he was divinely rescued to fulfill his as-yet incomplete mission.

His efforts in fighting the increasing liberalizing of the church are having a profound effect in ministries of many denominations throughout the world. While media attention is drawn to cases of polarizing incidents, what they have not adequately covered is the vast underlying attitude changes with a renewed return to religious fundamentalism in all denominations in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. It's through the inspired efforts of people like the Pope that this great reawakening is spreading.

Although I believe he is misguided on many minor points of doctrine, I still believe that he truely has magnified the mission God gave him, is living a magnicent live worthy of emulation in terms of spiritual dedication and integrity, and will be richly rewarded in Heaven for his personal sacrifices here.

But, he's not dead yet, according to the wire. Supposedly he's just having trouble getting food down following the previous throat surgery. That was due to breathing difficulties. Not sure if that is due to the Parkinson's disease or not. My grandpa (the glowing nuke guy, just turned 91) also has Parkinson's, but was able to pretty much arrest it due to early detection and treatment. Plus he's never been shot and has the opportunity to hike mountains everyday. So maybe it's the Parkinson's progression, maybe it's the crud, or maybe he's just getting old.

Regardless what the reason, the pope continues to be a living being, and when God's done with him here, God will take him home.

Dont know much about the Pope , so i dont know what sort of a guy he is/was. Anyone got a summary of his life or something a biography if you will? I mean list of how he became pope and what he did during his years.

kinda indeifferent to this, he never made an impact on my life other than diverting media attention from fairly important news, to me hes just a face in the crowd of those who will die today, but my sympathy goes out to him and i hope for as little pain as possible as he passes away.

like any death, its a sad passing for someone who has been a great influence to millions apon millions of people... although i'm a complete atheist, it's definnatly a sad moment for someone who has campaigned so relentlessly to make the church, and the catholic faith 'better' and up-to-date...

although, quite morbidly, i've never seen a conclave yet and i am finding the prospect of seeing this acient trandition played out quite interesting. I guess it must be after reading the dan brown books (angle and demons)

Dude show some fucking respect.   Whether you like him or not, millions of people around the world regard him as their spiritual leader, and while I don't personally agree with some of his positions, as others have said, he has done alot to promote world peace.

I hope that when your loved ones pass away people do not make such comments about them.   Anyone's death is not something to be made fun of unless of coarse the circumstances surrounding their death were somewhat amusing.  

But as others said, he is not dead yet and hopefully he will recover.  But at his age, a high fever and infection is very very serious.  But he's a tough old man with an amazing will to live and who even despite enormous pain has only until recently never failed to do his duties as the Pope despite physical weakness and pain.  

For that alone I admire him. My prayers go out to da Papa!
