Dutch classified documents found on Kazaa

Quote[/b] ]At least 75 pages of highly classified information about human traffickers from the Dutch Royal Marechaussee - a service of the Dutch armed forces that is responsible for guarding the Dutch borders - have been leaked to the controversial weblog Geen Stijl (No Style).

The documents, whicn contain phone numbers and tapped conversations, were found unencrypted on Kzaa, the public file sharing service. The likeliest explanation for their appearance is that a member Dutch Royal Marechaussee worked on the documents from home and unintentionally shared his entire hard drive with the rest of the world, through Kazaa.

Initially, Geen Stijl wanted to reveal juicy details from the leaked documents, but backed off in the face of legal threats by the Public Prosecutor. The weblog says it will co-operate fully with investigators.

The disclosure of the classified documents is yet another security lapse for the Dutch public prosecutor's office. In October last year, a leading Dutch prosecutor resigned after he throwing out his old PC with the rubbish. The hard disk contained hundreds of pages of confidential information about high profile crime cases, as well as his credit card number, social security number and personal tax files. ®

first an officer throws away his computer because it had a virus (got picked up and repaired by a cabdriver, had loads of valuable data on it)

and now a member of the Marechaussee does this?! crazy_o.gif oh man...

Personally i think those documents will not have revealed that much important information ,not that it's good but it's probably not that dammaging for anti-trafficing at all ,since the nature of anti trafficing doesn't lend itself to be easily battled unless when working in an international coperation.

Europe has a problem with illigal immigration but fighting this on the national level is almost uselles ,human trafficers work from country's outside Europe and bring the big mass of immigrants in via the fringes of Europe ,by country's like Italy (from Balkan) or spain (Straith of gibraltar) by boat usually.Once the immigrants are in Europe they can travel easily to any member state ,so it's more important to stop immigration at those european borders rather than national borders ,in addition to battle these human trafficing crime syndacate's (it's mainly maffia work) in their country of origin. (Albania for instance)

If this marechaussee is working on the dutch national borders then i can only presume that their effeciancy to stop immigration is probably next to nothing.

Afcourse ,as Belgian i noticed this ,it's hard to predict the sentiment of the Dutch people on such incidents these days as immigration is more than a hot and controversial topic in the Netherlands now ,the aftermath of the murders of pim fortuyn and Van Gogh have created a significant crack in the Dutch Multicultural society and people tend to react emotionaly on such topics there ,emotionally enough to get some people scapegoated and fired over what may otherwise be an insignificant incident.

So what now?

The guy to blame gets thrown out for his inability to properly setup Kazaa? Oh and for that matter is Kazaa illegal in Netherland? Its not legal in the US anymore or is it? I heard rumours of it being not in PC magazine ME.

The point is not that Kazaa is illegal or something. The point is: if I work for the Dutch Army from home, I have to take care. Sharing the entire hard drive or putting confidential documents in a shared directory is "grossly negligent", an instant dismissal would be an appropriate step to deal with this, not to mention a charge.

We are more or less adult, so we can take responsibility for our actions. If I don't know how to use Kazaa, I a) read some stuff on the web how to do things or b) let it be. Easy, isn't it?

He's not the first one to do that mistake.. I wonder how many have shared their whole drive including private photos or passwords. Not all understands what it means to select 'share C:'

People just hit install and click on icon on the desktop to start it. Not many knows how a car really works more than that you fill it with gas and turns on the engine.

This is a real problem..

A couple of months after Windows XP came out, the CIA and assorted other intelligence agencies went nuts when they discovered that when XP crashes, it by default sends a memory dump to Microsoft. This of course over internet, unencrypted etc. So anybody listening could have grabed a good portion of the memory that contained classified stuff.

Why on earth would an agency allow someone to take classified documents home? If that's the kind of security they have, then it makes me wonder what else of theirs has made it onto the internet/into the wrong people's hands(either by file sharing, intentional leaks/espionage, etc.).

Wrong analogy.

"Know how to use computer" equals not "repair car"

"Know how to use computer" equals "know how to drive (incl. rules/regulations)"

But "installing software" equals "repair car" (or for that matter adding parts to increase driving sensation)

Why not ?

You have to sign some real nasty papers to get you to that level and those papers do tell you very accurate what you are allowed to do and what you are not allowed to do with the papars you´re granted access to.

I for myself have a second comp for that stuff. The comp is not connected to internet and the crypted files only reside in a lockbox provided by my unit. I got an USB key that is necessary to view the files and unique passes and crypt codes for any of the documents . Seems to be pretty safe for me. Of course you need to have the right home setup also, that means, alarm system, lockable doors and all that. But I need that stuff anyway as I do have weapons at home.

For me it´s good to have the chance to do the classified paperworks at home. It saves a lot of time and if you follow the rules literally it´s very hard for intruders of any kind to get acess to them. That´s how the game is meant to be played. If this guy was stupid enough to share the things on Kazaa he´s obviously not ready for classified stuff and I´m sure he´s broken some essential points of the documents he had to sign before he got acess to classified stuff.

And if I don't know how to install parts to increase driving sensation I don't do it (*). Or let authorized personnel do the work. Or get some informations on howtodoit.

(*) I've to add that I'm not a ricer... the only "parts to increase driving sensation" were the CD changer and 195 tyres on aluminium wheels. Next part will be a cold start valve to reduce pollution and therefore get into a better tax class...

Yes, but so there is a problem with their education, top secret/classified stuff should not wander around on machines that have a physical Internet connection. You do what is meant to be done, stand alone machine. smile_o.gif It's a bitch, but this is the only really secure method.

Oh yeah, classified information always exists in selected people's homes, it's kind of necessary....

I say some addonmakers send their addons (encrypted with 16-digit passcodes) to a random person in their list of who they know he or she won't delete it. It could be a loyal fan, it could be a classmate. just SOMEBODY that won't delete it.

It could save allot of trouble biggrin_o.gif

What? Oh pipe down over there. smile_o.gif

I meant, it is just more productive to have selected individuals work on documents at home, plus their brain is the biggest risk anyway, at work or at home. tounge_o.gif
