German DSL Connection

Recommended Posts

Dear Ladies and gentlemen from Germany,

I am currently (and for the first time) organising a DSL connection for my new appartment in Berlin.

The first step I took was to get an ordinary Telekom telephone connection for around 17 Euro per month. That I guess is the precondition for a new connection. Now step 2 would be to get a good flat rate.

If I understood it correctly they are offering me a startup package for 99 Euro including the WLAN. From then on I was thinking about choosing a Telekom 1000 connection (1024 Kbit/s). So all in all I pay 45 Euro per month for telephone and DSL connection as well as 99 Euro once for the WLAN.

To me that sounds okay. Is 1024 fast enough for online pleasure (MP)? I am not so much into downloading media files or large files. But I want a good connection to load new addons and play without lag.

What is your judgement? What provider did you choose?

i strongly dislike telekom for unknown reasons..maybe its just their monopoly which keeps me away.

the offer they gave you sounds good though, wlan incl. is also a good thing.

i use netcologne and am happy with it but as the name says it´s only a local provider  :|

btw: you sig is kinda "wirr"  rock.gif  tounge_o.gif

But is 1024 kbit enough?

I assume that is the download-rate unless you ordered SDSL.

What is the upload bandwidth? The upload-bandwidth is the only interesting issue here. I live in Norway and I'm playing on a server in Holland over my 704/128 ADSL line. It works great. I get 45-55ms in ping. No transfer problems at all.

Downstream 1024 Kbit/s & Upstream 128Kbit/s

or

Downstream 3072 Kbit/s & Upstream 384 Kbit/s

What I hope is that the first offer is fast enough, cause it is much cheaper! smile_o.gif

Like I said, I have no problems with 128k/bit upload to our server in Holland. You should be fine, just don't expect to play on servers in Australia or busy servers in the US.

Fast enough for what? Hosting ofp? It isn't. Playing ofp? It is more than enough.

If you don't have some cool local provider i would mostly stick to telekom or telekom resellers, as their backbones seem to be the best in the tests and other isp sometimes block or trafficshape some ports. And most isp offer UP TO the given rate, telekom guarantees that you get those transfer rates (if internet servers are fast enough).

I got t-online dsl flat 1000 now because of their "don't pay 99€ registration/setup fee when ordering t-online isp with t-com dsl. Maybe i will change isp to some other (gmx or 1&1 or something) in the next months, if those are cheaper. I read some great reviews about gmx, but you telekom dsl connection for that one and i did not want to pay the extra 99€ for NOT taking t-online with it, at least in the beginning.

The only grape i have so far is that telekom are the only to use interleaving by default and charge extra for switching back to fastpath. My ping is 65ms with interleaving and 20ms with fastpath.

I am very happy with my Telekom DSL, never had any problems with it.

I only got "fastpath" for better pings, which costs -,99 cent extra per month.

Telekom is not the cheapest way, but a very stable one.

I think Telekom is the best solution

Of course there are ISPs which are much cheaper, but Telekom doesnot block any ports and you usually have good ping times regardless where you live and how many other people in your area have DSL.

And 1024/128 is more than needed for playing OFP

Yes, it's "official" called fastpath.

You should call a "T-Punkt" or go there and talk with the ppl.

I don't eat fish.. I eat the horses from the horsetrack close by and we received electricity last year so no more need of chopping wood.

Good luck getting ADSL.. You could also advice Bals how to fix that once he get's back.. but I am starting to doubt Hösacker will ever get adsl. We will see propably see tourism to Mars before that's a reality. biggrin_o.gif

well I'd have ordered 1&1 DSL

it's cheaper than Telekom, but uses the same services etc

1&1 is something like a subsidiary of Telekom

and standard DSL 1000 cost around 35 Euro a month

never had problems with it

If you only play a few games and surf the net then you might not need the flatrate. GMX has good offers for volume tariffs (much cheaper than T-Online) while still using the Telekom infrastructure. For the flatrate I also recommend t-online. Good quality connections and great pings if you use fastpath.

As for the 1&1 offer: make sure that's not just the flatrate but also includes the dsl connection fee (which I doubt).

yes i included that fee

15 Euro for 1&1 DSL + 20 Euro DSL connection fee (or 15 for ISDN users)

I have a feeling you are being ripped off in Germany. I'm paying 25 €/month for 100 MBit/s, full duplex.

Tele2. It was however a deal for the entire building. I think the market price is actually 35 €/month.
