Gun Flashlights

well maybe not. But I did manage to put a flashlight on a unit that moves with the gun. It was easy, all I had to do was put two points that lined up with the weapon proxy and then add a light to the points in the unit config. The light will move with the gun during all movements and animation, even when he puts the gun on his back. There are a few pros and cons though. But first:

notice the light moves with the gun during reloads.

the good stuff:

--------------

-no scripting required

-AI soldiers use it during combat without using scripts

-player uses it like the lights on a vehicle, by pressing "L"

-simple for AI to turn on, off by default

-some insane night MP games with no nvgoggles

The bad stuff

-------------

-doesn't line up with individual guns

-there is a slight problem when moving the gun vertically, if the gun doesn't move fast enough the light will sometimes not move, but it isn't really that noticable.

-This is all done using OFP's rather bad lighting system, so small things like rocks and trees look great but bigger things don't work as well.

-the light doesn't illuminate the ground except on higher terrain detail settings.

-cant be added onto existing soldiers without modifing their models.

But aside from that it is really fun to play with!

fancy writing a tutorial on this? i reckon a lot of people will love to implement this on their own weapons

That would be neat to have on some swat weapons, even if cqb is crap in OPF it would be fun, i hope to see this in some real guns and not halo laser beam thingy's tounge_o.gif .

Yes, because in Master_Chief's post he said under the good stuff

And also if you watched the video, just before he starts running towards the barrels, you can see that he turned it on.

I can't tell which is more amazing:

A) the people who break the so-called "engine limitations" of OFP

B) the OFP engine's capabilities despite its so-called limitations.

just for the record, IIRC the flashlight was available in demo, but was taken out since it had bugs.

Hmm, looking amazing but I have a couple of questions:

What if you don't hold a gun and press L?

What if you are holding a gun which doesn't have a flashlight in RL or so, will you still get the light? smile_o.gif

I hope you will continue development on this project.

it is not quite an "engine limit break through" as the engine allows lights on soldier units(they are config as vehicals in OFP), yet the hard part is to lines up the gun and the lights to make sure that they move together

OFP has limitations? wink_o.giftounge_o.gif

looks very nice anxious to try this in game.

this brings on a whole new breed of possibilits incluiding multipul lights on vehicals (such as ships) and gaurd towers with working/moving spot lights (moving by player/AI)
