Yeah, inventories was terrible also because it's likely to lose items during the check-up, which is ironic. wink_o.gif

All I lost during the service was one lousy pair of socks. I was lucky I guess.

Hi all

I've taken photos from a recent armour exhibit at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, UK. I'll be hosting them here for the time being. I also have high res versions if required.

There's a mix of WWII and modern vehicles - might be of use? Also, I will be extracting sound files from the video I took (some of the tanks were moving so it should be possible to grab 'track' noises from most of them). Message me if you'd need something like that.

Cheers

Steiner

But I think I fell in love with this "Schwimmwagen" (at least I believe it's one).

Yes, it is real - really nice condition as well. The guy purchased it in an auction over the phone (from Hong Kong) from an engineering museum in Germany that went bankrupt. What a story! What luck! banghead.gif Here's some low res screen grabs from the video:

Any idea how much such a vehicle is smile_o.gif? Would be nice to cruise around at the local lakes and then just drive into it. Muhaha imagine, that would be great. The faces of all spectators rofl.gif

/edit

Now, have a look at THIS:

1. 2. 3.

My grandfather had a real "Kübelwagen". The "Schwimmwagen" is a modification of the "Kübelwagen". Both are really undestroyable. You can kick against the doors as hard as you can and it happens nothing. This car is a dream. Well.... Don't think I couldn't drive biggrin_o.gif!

Actually the car had many accidents with no visual damage, it rusted.

Haven't a clue how much it'd cost - but it wouldn't be cheap that's for sure. Nice images - you can see many similarities to the WWII stuff. The guy who owned the Schwimmwagen at this tank show also had a Kubelwagon. Seemed much more difficult to get in and out of the Schwimmwagen if you were loaded with gear and carrying a weapon.

Your grandfather was fortunate to have owned a Kubelwagen - was he in WWII?

Yes, he fought at Monte Cassino - "fortunately" he got wounded very early. Later he became a PoW. After the war had ended he stole a Kübelwagen and fleed back to his wife.

Well that's the little story about that car. Unfortunately it does no longer exist and my grandpa is dead sad_o.gif!

Wow - amazing story! Sorry to hear about his passing - but at least you got him to open up about his war experiences. My father never wished to talk about his (I only know he was in an armoured division in France and was in for 4 years).

Yeah since then he hated all Italians and called them "Itaka's".

He did even boykott Pizza and Spaggheti! I couldn't live without it but he never forgave the italians.

Forgive who - the soldiers or civilians? If soldiers - was it because he felt they were poor allies?

NOTE: I've created MPEGs of my videos from this event so message me if you need engine/track sound files from any of the pictured vehicles.

Yeah ,my grandfather was a lower officer at the fortress of Eben-Emal when it was taken by german Fallshirmjägers ,he managed to escape with a few other men after having been captured by germans ,and had to hide himself for 4 years on a farm to avoid winding up in a German labour camp.I don't dare to ask him about his experiences though he's still alive ,i asked it once and all it resulted in was my grandfather silently crying and my grandmother being furious at me ,after that i never dared to ask it anymore ,but i know from my grandmother that he saw many of his close friends die in combat.

Somehow I really like this one, it's got sort of a "We're in a hell-hole warzone but it's still a day at the beach" feel to it somehow wink_o.gif

@Tovarish: I like that one too. In fact I've seen a very similar photo from WWII with a German tank using a beach umbrella in a similar manner - I'll try to find it as a comparison.

Photo from my vacation to Halifax.

HMCS Sackville

Beautiful ship. She could kill a thing or two in her day, too. tounge2.gif

And please excuse the mouse pointer in the center of this pic. (It's a screenshot from a reel my neighbor took in the 60s. I have permission.)

Spanish F86 Saber*NOT WORKING*

He served in the USAF for four years in Spain and Pakistan designing radar towers.

*EDIT*Ookay... The second pic isn't showing up for me. Huh... sad_o.gifconfused_o.gif
