Longinius 1 Posted June 30, 2004 Hello all I am looking for the English word for what we in Sweden call "närskydd". Its a unit tasked with the ground defense of for example and airforce base and its surroundings here in Sweden. Their task is not to police other soldiers, so they are not MP's. They are basically infantry units with the goal of protecting the base area from infiltration, sabotage and attack. Any idea what they might be called in English? Messiah 2 Posted June 30, 2004 Guards? Â in UK we have units for the airforce that do the same, but they are just the RAF Regiment (they dont fly, they guard) and the closest i can think to that is the Royal Marines Fleet Protection Squad... basically a RRF who protect our boats etc from sabotage. the_shadow 0 Posted June 30, 2004 Närskydd acts a couple of km infront of the units they are protecting, for example artillery units, they are more a unit that mops up what the assaulting force have left behind... then ofcource the units "guarded" by Närskydd puts up own guards and postings to protect from whatever Närskyd might have missed (hopefully not more then a single BMP/eq or squads... the "närskydd" units usually dont have the most armoured vehicles, they rather have Mt-Lb or other APC type of vehicles... so they are sort of a area defencive unit.. rather than guards... hm, i hav to explane this better... let´s se.. let´s say we have the front line... there we have all the "heavy" equipment, tanks, IFV´s and stuff.. a couple of kilometres behind them we have "närskydd" and a couple of kilometres nehind them we have artillery, support, command sort of units... so they are there to protect that noone that makes it through the front lines make it back to our support and command units did that make sence??? Akira 0 Posted June 30, 2004 MPs would still be what you are looking for. They are trained as infantry as well, and their main object is to protect installations and their perimeter. Should the shit go down, regular infantry would reinforce. My cousin did that in GW1. Air bases in Saudia Arabia.
hellfish6 7 Posted June 30, 2004 The USAF has the Air Police and also the Security Forces, which are a part of the Air Police that is responsible for facility defense. They're basically a light infantry unit.
Badgerboy 0 Posted June 30, 2004 The British equivilent is the RAF Regiment for defense of airfields. They are also tasked with the capture of airfields in wartime, and preparing them for CAS aircraft. They have light armour, and their own support units.
