May i just say, that i read that economic b******t off the UKIP party before it was posted up here and had already dismissed almost every point.

And i am studying economics smile_o.gif

Actually, most of us economic students tend to be, by nature, right wing (let markets work, smash the trade unions, need flexible labour markets, ect ) biggrin_o.gif so its not like im attacking them because they are right wing. More like they dont know **** about economics, and unless you want to see the UK dragged into a recession, you dont want the UKIP pulling us out of the EU.

Like denoir said, the MEP's have nothing to do with EU membership or Euro, so voting them won't cause us to leave the EU.

Thats why i didn't say "Vote UKIP in you local council elections.

Czech? You're British, you wouldn't be voting for a Czech party.

... I think crazy_o.gif .. I'm not quite sure how it works when you live in a different member state... My guess would be that it is still your national citizenship that decides, but I'm not sure..

yes something called like "briefwahl". but it's a bit too late for this now (sending your vote via post to your country).

Yeah, that's postal voting. But he should be able to vote directly at the embassy.

@SgtBarnes: Scottish National Party, want independance but are pro-european. So what are they trying to be independant from?

Heh, swapping one set of 'rulers' in London for a new set in Brussels, eh? biggrin_o.gif

Well, not really....

I believe Scotland needs it's own say in Europe. Some of the decisions taken by the UK government at European level haven't be suitable for Scotland (Fishing and immigration policy for example).

As for why i vote for the SNP? Well, Scotland should be one of Europes richest countries (extensive natural resources, excellent education system and institutions etc.), yet our population is shrinking, have high levels of poverty, and we're the most unhealthy country in Europe sad_o.gif

As has always been the case, the brightest and best have to leave to find success. There's an endemic confidence problem up here, and it's going to take a lot of time and effort to reverse it...but i'm pretty certain that the answer is not further union with the UK.

For the Germans: here is a website where you can check which party fits best to you:

http://www.wahl-o-mat.de

Of course the party I was in most accordance with were the greens biggrin_o.gif

Thats old news, we finns have had similar things for our more indecisive voters even during the 1999 election. tounge_o.gif

Wahl-O-Mat is also pretty old IIRC. Or was it another site I visited during the elections in 2002? rock.gif

Doesn't Scotland have its own Parlimant?

Well, yes. It has a devolved parliament which Tony Blair affectionately described as a "Parish council". mad_o.gif

An embarrasing gaffe, but he's largely right....the real power is still reserved in Westminster.

The election here in Germany was a fucking joke mad_o.gif

I went there, gave in my polling card, and they immediately ticked me off in a book, without asking me for ID crazy_o.gif

Then they refused to give me a sheet for the European election; fair play, I had applied late, but I did have a letter from the council stating I could take part in that election anyway. So, what do they do? Instead of making me go fetch the letter, they just gave it to me.

Is it just me, or is this very unprofessional and very dangerous? I could have been anyone... crazy_o.gif

It was one very long sheet with many funny-but-true parties. Btw, the polling station for my electoral constituency (thanks, dict.leo.org! biggrin_o.gif) resides --same procedure as every year-- in my old elementary school classroom...

Ok, now I've done my civic duty. As expected I voted for the liberals.

The process in Sweden is like this: you get a voting card by mail. It is a piece of paper that says where you should vote, your name and a number. You get this weeks before the actual vote is.

On the election day, you go to your local polling station. There first you have a selection of ballots (one per party) that look like this:

ballot.jpg

After taking one or more of these you go into a private booth where you put a mark in the box of the candidate you wish to vote for and put the ballot (one ballot) into the envelope.

After that is done you hand over the envelope and your voting card. One person reads the number on the card and another checks it against a list and reads the name out loud.

And that's it. They have no ID check. So in theory you could take somebody else's voting card. But considering that it's difficult to get people to vote even once, I don't think that's too much of a problem wink_o.gif

---

One thing I noticed about Germany (and France for that matter): you don't have any people in the liberal group in the EP. How come? Are you seriously saying that there are no liberal parties? crazy_o.gif That's really strange as it is the third largest block in the EP:

_40255955_party_groups_info416.gif

Quote[/b] ]EPP-ED: European People's Party-European Democrats (Centre-Right)

PES: Party of European Socialists (Socialists)

ELDR: European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party (Liberals)

EUL/NGL: European United Left / Nordic Green Left (Far Left)

Greens/EFA: Greens / European Free Alliance (Greens and regionalists / nationalists)

IND: Independents, not attached to any group

UEN: Union for Europe of the Nations (Right wing / Gaullists)

EDD: Europe of Democracies and Diversities (Eurosceptics)

In Germany we have only one true liberal party, the FDP. But they're a joke. I mean their head Guido Westerwelle is always on TV in all kinds of political talkshows, but nobody really cares about what he says and their election results are always a disaster. They're even weaker than the Greens and only a little bit stronger than the left ex-commies from the SED... *cough*... PDS.

@denoir

the liberals weren't in the EP because they haven't reached 5% of votes in Germany.

And I voted for the liberals once more; I hope that, if they get into the parliament, they vote against software patents.

That's kind of unfair in the global sense. In Sweden 4% is required. Mind you that it is 4% of 8.5 million. In your case it's 5% of 80 million! We have 19 seats and you have 99. So for us a minimum for a party is about 400,000 votes to get a seat, while for yours it is 4,000,000 votes. Not very fair, I'd say.

IMO the minimum limit should be counted according to the seats. In case of Sweden 1/19 and in case of Germany 1/99.
