Hunt the intruder - out-flank him

Recommended Posts

Could you also maybe add a slower version of each plane, maybe called "Plane-CAS".  It would just help the AI target and kill targets more efficiently.

I wouldn't mind seeing a slower version of the Phantom too.

IMHO, due to the size of the islands, ofp isn't well suited for jets flying this fast. AI pilots don't seem to handle these jets too well either.

It would be great if addonmakers in general could make slower versions of their aircraft for AI and CAS use.

They should to take into account playability and not just realism.

Wouldn't making them slower make them easy to shoot down as well? IMO they're at the perfect speed for an attack, they hit targets perfectly accurately after their 1st attack run.

Well I have had problems with a lot of user made planes missing their targets. The only draw back I see with these planes now is how useful they are in missions, they don't hit the targets, mainly because they fly to fast. This isn't just these planes, its most of them in general.

Hey Foot, got an 'Idea'.  I'm not very good at bombing runs using just my eye, so I was wondering if you could include a script that accesses (or just copies) the CCIP algorithm for the readied unguided bomb (whichever one.. even rudementary would be a blessing), solves for the impact, and transfers the point to the normal heading of an invisible box/cylinder/rectangle object that has a 'PIP' sight texture on the far (positive normal) end.  The near end (pivot axis) of the object will be anchored at the POV of the player so the pip will always be perpendicular to the players' view. A bit of playing with the length of the object so it hides behind the console if it strays from the HUD, and VOLIA! a PIP sight.. (sounds good in my head, hope it won't be too bad for CPU loading, difficulty in the accuracy of calculations, etc...)

Please be the first to consider this for the good of OFP airmen everywhere.. The digital arse you save maybe your own!  rock.gif

Thanks  biggrin_o.gif

Scrub

P.S. As far as the bogging-down issue I wrote to you about a while ago... I had a COC UA monolith hidden away on the island. My bad.. Now I routinely have 10-12 birds in a furball and some action going on down below too!  So thanks again for a killer flock.

Scrub - The bomb's already 'cheat' a bit - all the dumb

bombs (like the Mk-82) actually do some 'flying' towards the

target, like the real-life LGB's do. You don't have to have the

pipper exactly on the box for a hit (although it does help, of

course). This is mainly included so that the AI has an easier

time.

For CCIP, there have been some moves towards it, but one

problem is getting the attitude and roll of the plane is quite

hard in scripting.

I take the point that these planes are getting a little too

fast. One of the problems is the 'heirarchy' - we F-15's that

are faster than Phantoms. But we want Phantom's to be faster

than F-5's. In turn, F-5's must be faster than A-6's. But if we

make the F-15 'slow' enough, the A-6 will fall out of the sky.

In order to make the AI more effective, it's a good idea to

give them a long run-up to the target, and increasing the

rank and skill of the pilot helps as well. If the bombs are

going long, try setting some turning waypoints before the

bomb run in order to bleed some speed.

Also, some of these planes are _very_ powerful (I'm looking

at you, Mr. F15E) in terms of destruction capability. If I make

the Strike Eagle a 'never-miss' plane, it could be hard to

balance the missions.

Bonko - Startup sounds and smoke are on the to-do list for

the Sea Fury.

Supah - Do you mean around the 'intake' and the engine

housing? The model could stand a few more polys there, I

agree. I'll take a look.

Well personally on a strictly AA fighter I don't think that speed is a big deal. However on the ground attack variants it could take a little slowing down. I don't think that one jet necessarily has to be faster or slower then another. Its best for them to have a speed that works best for that particular aircraft. For example on your original F-5 Phantom I noticed that it sometimes smacks into the ground when trying to bomb. I know this is a game engine problem, but if its also a speed problem, then lowering the aircraft's speed perhaps might fix that problem. Ditto for the F-105 Thunderchief.

But all in all I think all your aircraft kick ass.

Any word on the Vulcan? That's the one RAF aircraft that I'm dying to see in OFP with big thundering engines and smoke trails like the F-4. smile_o.gif

I can't think of a time when you truly want the planes to miss their targets, at least in SP. I don't want to sound like complaining, and if I do I'm sorry... I just want to have these planes as useful as possible. I like using them in missions, but they miss their targets a lot. I'm just trying to come up with solutions...

Good job on the planes. wink_o.gif

RAF Phantoms didn't have a cannon.

Yup, they only ever used the gun pods.

If I remember rightly the nose cone may have prevented them from being fitted with an internal cannon like the US Phantoms were, I could be wrong though.

True, we fitted a larger more powerful radar and avionics instead, better suited to the interceptor role we used it for, where it was more practical to use more advanced long range missiles that we installed the avionics for, so no real need for a cannon that would be better suited on a straight-up fighter.

I read that our Eurofighters will not have cannons either, (at least we failed to buy the amunition for the cannons, so we can't use them) for a similar reason.

Actually the RAF phantoms were derivatives of a US Navy phantom type. They were fitted with slightly differing avionics and rolls royce spey engines instead of the J-79's. The choice not to fit guns was made for the british by the americans in the early days of phantom development. It proved to be a costly mistake as it also would have for the british had they been drawn in to a protracted high intensity conflict with these birds. Missiles arent called Miss-iles for nothing wink_o.gif

The Eurofighter will pbb have a canon ... if it doesn't .... LOL @ the RAF!

To be fair though, the maericans didn't realise until after the vietnam war had started that they needed guns on the phantom. By then it was too late to change anything. Anyway, Å5 says the Typhoon turns out to be a pile of s*it

Progress updates?

1) Sea Fury - Numbering code; Startup sound and smoke.

2) RAF Phantom - Flight model; Squadron specific textures;

Engine bay curviness now much better (Thnx Supah).

3) Su-27 - Proximity fusing; Possible loadout changes.

4) F-15C - 'Done'.

5) F-15E - Loadout; Gunner/cargo position resolving.

6) A-6 - Numbering; Carrier-capable gear; Loadouts done -

bomber, firebomber, missile carrier (SLAM + MAV)

7) Buccaneer - New model in place; Cockpit work.

8) Jaguar - New model in place (Pics soon); Cockpit work.

9) Vulcan - Cockpit work.

10) Lightning - Animated gear. (Beta soon)

11) F-86 - 'Material' work - shiny metal (hopefully).

12) Hunter - Cockpit 'polishing'.

The Jag and Bucc should remove the need for a ground attack

Phantom.

MiG-21 and 'another' are in the hands of another addon

maker. Flogger will get a new model soon.

I've got a few private projects that are sucking up a lot of

time (deadlines etc), but they should be cleared soon.

I'm looking for cockpit pictures for the Bucc and Jag - if

anyone can help out, please post here or PM me.

(Edit - Forgot the Hunter.)

Aw...ya forgot about the ol'  Vulcan you had been working on many moons ago.  sad_o.gif   (sniff).

I hope your Bucanneer model still will have the same fantastic flight handling characteristics as your old one and that you will keep the South African version.

Glad to hear that you're updating the Jaguar also.

The Bucanneer and Jaguar are both fantastic fighter bombers.
