Old enough to kill,

that's not fair to people who can't make it to highschool because they're not smart enough, but do want to. It's a nice thought but where will it end, hellfish? How long will it take untill you need a degree to be able to vote or stuff like that. That's like going back 100 years into our democtratic history. The basic rule in democracy is tha teveryone has a vote. Taking away that rule would ultimately result in a very bad system.

It's also not fair to people who are smart enough to get a high school degree but havn't got the chance to get one.

Ban alcohol for non-educated people and football will die. tounge_o.gif

...As opposed to now, when every total moron can vote? Personally I don't think it would be worse.

"The problem with democracy is that every damn fool gets a vote" - some famous guy.

I see numerous examples of degree of education != being smart every day at my high school. Success in education seems to depend more on personal ambitions, ability to memorize and person skills rather than on how smart you are.

Yeah, and 'smart' doesn't mean 'reasonable' (neither does 'educated').

Quote[/b] ]In denmark the legal age to drink is 15, and the legal age to drive is 18. This works great

That actually makes more sense if you think about it.

At a younger age they're more likely to get all that out of their system (partying, idiotic binging) without running a risk of being legally able to jump into a car and run some old bag lady crossing a street; all whilst in a drunken stupor.

Then again I did quite a bit of drinking at 15 and by 18 had more than enough of it, the same went for many of my friends and a relative of mine who is close in age. I was probably stupid to be doing all that to begin with, but kids at that age will drink whether or not it's illegal. I think the responsibility to deal with awful case of rot-gut the next morning after a night of heavy drinking is a more realistic responsibilty for a 15/16 year old than getting into an automobile that weighs a quarter of a ton that is capable of killing someone.

Anyhow. As far as the whole military thing goes. Yeah. It sucks for those guys, but eh. It's their sandbox. Their rules unfortunately. To he honest, a drinking age set at 21 is quite ridiculous. That's my opinion though.

Quote[/b] ]Success in education seems to depend more on personal ambitions, ability to memorize and person skills rather than on how smart you are.

That's very true. I'm reasonably intelligent, however I can't memorize many things worth a fiddlers, not to mention that I've never really had much focused ambition. So needless to say. I did awfully in school except for anything related to literature or languages. I did well in those regardless of whether I tried or not. Which leads me to believe that some people just have certain innate or unconsciously cultivated aptitudes in certain areas. Some have more of these than others.

Quote[/b] ]Personally, I think that in order to drink, vote or drive you should have a high school degree (or GED).

Any kind of certification on paper means absolutely nothing in the context of whether someone is a responsible person when it comes to drinking OR driving. My uncle who graduated at the top five percent of all his university classes (which would imply that he is to a certain degree, intelligent) is a terrible driver. Absolutely horrendous.  Not to mention that alcoholics and abusive drinkers can come from all walks of life be they rich or poor, educated or uneducated.

Here in Belgium i'm allowed to smoke pot or drink beer at any age. biggrin_o.gif

Uhm, smoke pot? Sure, you CAN do it but it'd be illegal...

No doubt about it, it's not allowed when you're under 18...

I think you're allowed to have about 3 grams when you're above 18, however i don't think you're allowed to carry it in public or sell it...

Pretty sure of that actually...

But our law about smoking weed is total bullshit, nobody actually understands what you are(n't) allowed to do...

I am, however, sure that it isn't allowed when you're under 18 years old...

Even if you're under 18? Hmm strange...

Of course when you smoke inside your own house the cops will never catch you and normally you should also be allowed to smoke from your parents (considering it's their house you're smoking in)... So yeah might be allowed but i think it's strange...

My parents have always been pretty open to marihuana ,but i never touched any hard drug's and i never will ,and everyone around me would disagree with me if i would begin hard drugs ,while they accept marihuana as a minnimaly harmfull drug. (less harmfull than beer for ex.)

I smoke marihuana regulary but not abusivly ,i would say 1 gram a week ,fairly few actually. And i am hyperkinetic wich make's me very nerveous on some monents ,marihuana can help to relax.I smoked since my sixteen ,i never really hided that use to my parents ,at home ill just use it while being in the living room among my family ,toghether with 1 of my brother's and 2 of my sisters in law who also use regulary.Other brother's or girlfriend experimented with it though don't use it regulary ,although they would dare to smoke one on a bleu moon.Marihuana can have it's good uses when taken as couple. ;)

But then my family is fairly leftists.

I remember when I was in Amsterdam that a lot of families would be in the "coffee shops" together. I always thought that was weird. That and seeing school groups walking through the Red Light district. Crazy Dutch. crazy_o.gifbiggrin_o.giftounge_o.gif
