SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted February 9, 2004 Okay, the topic and the description is my question. Why did they lock it, and how do you "unlock" it, could it be harmfull to unlock it and could it be harmfull to not unlock it?
shadow 6 Posted February 9, 2004 It is not harmful to unlock it (show all refreshrates) as long as you know how high refreshrate your monitor can handle. The reason the rates are locked to standard values are so that a person who don't know anything about this can set it higher than his monitor's specs and get a garbled screen (flicker). Flicker is not harmfull in the short run, but periods over one minute is not recomended as it wears the tube alot. Set the refresh-rate to the highest possible value, but anything above 100Hz is pointless as the human eye can't see the difference. In theory 75Hz is considered flicker-free, I say 85Hz and higher is flickerfree (I can easily see flicker in white colours in 75Hz).
Placebo 12 Posted February 9, 2004 Before going back to 2k I used multires, great little app, or there are more permanent solutions depending on your graphics card.
BraTTy 0 Posted February 10, 2004 Aside from any monitor damage that it may cause (does an awful squeeling) The worse that happens is that you could get it stuck in the blackout mode and be unable to see to change it back (don't press any keys for some seconds and it should change back, never press enter) The only time that I can forsee that you NEED to unlock hidden modes is when you have an oddball monitor that windows doesn't know, windows will leave it as pnp or what have you. And you might have to unlock other modes to get settings you desire
SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted February 10, 2004 Okay, thanks for clearing this up guys! According to windows XP the highest refresh rate for me is 60hz. But i recall having a higher one in ME. Quote[/b] ]The only time that I can forsee that you NEED to unlock hidden modes is when you have an oddball monitor that windows doesn't know I have this (supposedly) cheap AOC monitor. So that could be the case.
bn880 5 Posted February 10, 2004 I suggest to you that you install the proper driver for your monitor or read the specs for this monitor. You can even work out a specific refresh rate if you know the monitor display bandwidth. BW= w*h*frequency Once you know how much your monitor is capable of, just try it. Press ESC if your monitor goes wacko.
SpeedyDonkey 0 Posted February 10, 2004 Now i know... Using ME i hade a screen resolution of 1024*768 and running 75hz And now, in XP im using 1280 * 1024. So i changed it back to 1024*768 and boy it looked ugly. Anyway, i was able to go to 85hz But i rather have it at 1280*1024 and 60hz. Or maybe something in between. Btw, would this TFT be any good for work and games. I know nothing about TFT's so is 16ms acceptable? OH AND COMPLETLY OT Does anyone know of a website where you get to test your computers preformance?

I would advise you take care of your eyes instead of having a high resolution. 60Hz is terrible for you on most monitors (that is unless it's a radar screen or monochrome etc.) I run a 21" at 1024x768 and 120Hz Else I would never be able to spend more than 2h staring at it.But it's your choice. BraTTy 0 Posted February 10, 2004 I am currently running 1280 x1024 @ 75hz,but will do 85hz. My monitor is capable of 1600x1200 @ 75hz Alot of monitors are only capable of 60hz at higher resolutions. BN880 must have less headaches than me and I would follow his recommendation of trying to get the correct monitor driver (AOC website?) Some perfromance proggies that come to mind that I use is: Sisoft Sandra http://www.sisoftware.net/ Aquamark and 3dmark03 ...most can be found at www.guru3d.com edit: a LCD along the same resolutions and freq as my crt monitor for example would be too expensive for my blood. I don't think lcds are a good buy if your talking resolution and performance, but if you have to use your computer for many hours a day the lcd doesnt give out as much vdt's and are cleaner, safer, run cooler and usually take up a lot less room CRT is burning my retinas!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah exactly... I think most people know this already, but try to balance out the brightness of the CRT with that of your room or surrounding area. Preferrably have the room a small bit brighter than monitor. (damn I wish that organic pigment cell technology was popular already, like looking at a piece of paper)
