Tank fares?

Recommended Posts

What is this thread about rock.gif ?

Edit - Oh, tank flares tounge_o.gif . Possible, but I thought tanks used smoke grenade launchers, not flares.

The tanks in the BAS Tonal/OPFOR pack have automatic smoke grenades wink_o.gif

With the tanks from Swiss-MOD you can make a smoke-screen around your tank

But if you're hit in a T-55, you probably won't survive to enjoy the effects of a smoke grenade tounge_o.gif .

Isn't the ARENA sistem about that?

Smoke is just to hide the vehicle a bit so is less chances of being hit by unguided weapons.

BTW, in OFPEC is a flare script that you can use for anything, even soldier units.

ARENA is an active defense system trying to intercept & destroy the missile.

What you can also find are "flares" and "IR Jammers" used to confuse wire-guided ATGM guidance posts, like the russian Tshu system, the IR electronic jammer on US Marines Abrams during the war in Irak last year or the french LIRE.

Do they put it on every tank (looks very expensive) or just one modified tank from a squad?

Tshu is found on the T-90 (the 2 projector boxes surounding the main gun), I found only pics of Marines' abrams using the jammer, and Lire is used when there's a big known threat of ATGMs like MILANs, HOTs, TOWs, AT-3 Sagger, AT4 Spigot, AT-5 Spandrel,...

Smoke can block lasers, so laser targetting systems would be affected. At least in reality.

Tshu?!? rock.gif Maybe you mean the "Shtora EC system" (and Shtora-S; modernised version)?! Its designed to jam the optical guidance system of older AT systems and the laser guidance chanel of AT missiles but cant help against radar guided AT missiles or shells. About the Shtora-1 system

Thats why Russians came up with Arena APS (Active Protection System). Arena uses explosive cartridges placed in the radius of 360 degrees arround the turret. When an "incoming hostile object" is detected by a little 360° radar (placed on the rear part of the turret), the systemis activated and an explosive shrapnel cardridge is blown into the direction of the incoming shell/missile, destroying the warhead or at least deflecting the shell...

Nice indeed tounge_o.gif

and extremely ugly if infantry is walking by the side of the tank....those little plastic chunks won´t be appreciated by the soft guys wink_o.gif

it dosent have a radius of 360 degree as there its only about 270-290 as there is a section on the back of the turret on the t-80um1 where the snorkel is stored and due to that arena is not mounted there

OTShU or Tshu as written in some french sources is the EO interference emitters, a part of the whole Shtora system.

This wire-guided SACLOS ATGM jammer would be great in OFP, for light vehicles against most ATGMs found in the world (Tonal, Nogova,...)   wink_o.gif

Yeah MrBurns, VERY TRUE biggrin_o.gif

@aj_addons: OK, correction, only the radar has 360° coverage! The cartridges are not placed all arround the turret but only in a ~250° arc, but still the system is effective in all 360° since it has the possibility to automaticaly turn the turret into the ideal position for explosive cartridge launching (and later for impact with the missile/shell if the cartridge did not succeded to destroy the incoming hostile object).

@SPQR: Yes and in fact, me and Nagual (I think) came up with a script that (almost) successfuly simulated the Shtora system: detection of missile/shell, then automatic launch of smoke grenades to form a screen and in the same time turrning the turret towards the incoming threat to meet it with the tichest armor possible... On the other hand unfortunately at that time it was impossible to simulate jamming of the guidance system of the missile since once launched/fired, we could not assume control over the flying object by scripting (thats Suma's statement...so its true)! Im not sure if it would work now, with all those new options in the latest OFP builds, but we could try...

GetNearestObject and setvelocity!

/me does the getNearest and setVelocity dance

Although, is this what the real jammer does? Make the missiles crash into the ground or fly over the tank?
