Windows xp question

Recommended Posts

Hi !

I´ve got an XP professional edition running on my comp for 2 years now. No reisnatlly needed at that time. But I have memory issues now.

The primary partition where XP is located is 8 gigs in size.

I only have the drivers and system necessary files on that partitition. Only OFP , resistance, BAS and FDF located on the partitition.

Now windows keeps screaming that there are only 200 MB free space left on the drive. I already deleted unnessasary files and little progs and that solves the proble temporarely. After some days it ran out of free disk space again and again. I clear waste and use programs to clean harddrives of temporary files, the internet explorer cache and all that.

It comes over and over again. I used windows explorer to find big files also. The only 2 I´m not certain about are:

pagefile.sys and another sys file. They are both bigger than 1.5 Gbyte. What is the pagefile for ?

I don´t want to reinstall xp. So what can I do ?

As is said i already used diskcleaner, defrag and such. It only temporary solves the proble. Say i get 400 MB more free space but after a while it´s less than 200 again. I also delete temp folder at shutdown.

Well and Partittion magic to make the partitition bigger is also not usefull as i already raised it from 6 to 8 GB. Only takes some time and partitition is full again...

Any ideas ?

The page file is the virtual memory that is saved on the disk, instead of in the RAM. What you should do is put it on another partition.

Go under Control Panel->System->Advanced->Performance Settings->Advanced->Virtual Memory (Change)

Remove the page file from your XP partition and put it on another.

Ok thx fro the quick answrs. I put pagefile allegations to another partition and disabled system restor for all drives.

That did free me up 2 gigs. Nice job guys. I will have an eye on the developement though because Microsoft never shall be trusted biggrin_o.gif

Well, system restore is almost vital, and when you need it I can guarntee you will rue the day you disabled it, just set it to a more managable level of your HD, i.e. between 3-5%

I managed without system restore in 3.11/95/98/NT4/2k, so I'd rather not slow my system down with it, and not arse up my machine in the first place.

Well, no use in starting another thread in this.

I bought a new motherboard and now force feedback on my Saitek 3d force stick wont work. It is usb 2.0 and I have no clue where to begin to figure out what is wrong with it.

System restore IMO wastes space and slows down your PC, it's pointless, if you take care of your PC then nothing fatal will happen that can't be recovered from, and it only takes a short period of time to reinstall windows should it be absolutely necessary.

If you're really worried you're best off making a backup of your windows directory and putting it on a CD or something once everything is installed and configured as you like smile_o.gif

I suppose it's just a matter of how confident you are in your computer and troubleshooting skills wink_o.gif

You can also disable Hibernation support if that is enabled, I think that wastes some space. Also if you installed service pack 1, you can delete the CABS etc for that under a windows folder somewhere. smile_o.gif

It makes backups of all the useless crap. Your far better of making backups manually of your files (that you cant reinstall in a jivvy) on a seperate HDD in your machine/network smile_o.gif
