miles teg 1 Posted January 9, 2004 I'm curious is anyone working on Arab civilians??? I hope that someone does as they are sorely lacking in Middle East missions. Some of the BIS default civilians (male) work ok as many Arabs dress in Western clothes, however most women in the Middle East (even in more Western Middle Eastern nations) still usually wear a "hijab" which is just a head scarf, while other more conservative Muslim women wear the full burkha which includes the veil and covers their whole body. In addition it would be nice to see Arab men wearing the traditional white tunic, sandals, and the arab red and white headdress with the black rope holding it on. I can't remember the Arabic names but I remember the black rope had something to do with the camels. LOL! Anyhoo...here are some pics: Pics of Muslim women Pics of Arab men in traditional dress. Ah the above pic has the proper names for the attire. Anyways I hope that someone is interested in making such civilians. If anyone is or is actively making them please contact me because my mod (The Lost Brothers) also is in dire need of such Arab civilians as well. For any Middle East conflict they are important as often the fighting takes place in areas with alot of civilians. By place civilians around target areas, I believe it serves as an education tool about how difficult it is to avoid collateral dammage to a civilian population. This can serve as a training tool as well for military personel in order to try and explore different options for minimizing collateral dammage. Finally such addons could also be used as guerilla fighter addons if they are also put as "Resistance" and given weapons. miles teg 1 Posted January 9, 2004 OOooh cool! What kind of mod will it be? An Egyptian forces mod? If your team is interested I can talk with the guys in the Lost Brother mod to see if they're interested in working together with you guys on projects. We do have many Israelis on our team so if that's a problem then maybe it would not be a good idea. But overall they're pretty nice guys and aren't anti-Muslim or anti-Arab or anything (although they do have their political views). The missions in our mod for example are going to be set in the future so as to avoid alot of the political flaming that would cause by people accusing us of not being historically accurate. However the first campaign at least (Sanai campaign) will be from a Israeli soldier's perspective. Myself I'm not Jewish and lean a little more towards Islamic Sufi teachings in my personal beliefs but I enjoy learning about all cultures and religions and I have many Jewish and Muslim friends from all over the world. The members of the Lost Brothers mod team have always been very nice to me and they were the only mod team who seemed really serious about doing a good Israeli/Arab conflict mod that gives a fair shake to both sides of the conflict. I'm one of the mission maker's so I try very hard to do this even though the missions and the war they are set in is fictional. Anyways if you guys have a website I'd love to check out. miles teg 1 Posted January 10, 2004 Bin Laden is Arab because he is from Saudi Arabia. However he is normally dressed in Pashtun style garments and they and most Afghani people are most definitely NOT Arab and in fact usually get very pissed off if you call them Arab. Certainly Afghanis have a different style of dress. The women's burkhas of Afghanistan are usually a bit more colorful then the usual black ones women wear in Saudi Arabia for example. The men don't wear the same headdress's as Arabs on the Arabian peninsula usually wear but rather they wear various types caps or Shia cleric style turbans (like the black ones the Taliban often wore). However Remo has already made those and currently the NOMAD mod team is working on such units which I'm assuming will include civilians. Actually Remo's pack does include civilians although basically they're just the Taliban fighters without guns... so that could be improved. But the style of clothing that I showed in the pictures abovve is most definitely very representative of traditional Arab clothing worn by many Arabs on the Arabian Peninsula as well as by some Arabs in Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, and by some in North African countries like Egypt (although normally there they don't wear the headdress's and usually have different colored tunics or just wear western clothes). However for women, the Hijab (just the headscarf) is found in every Muslim country even in Indonesia and Malaysia which are most definitely NOT Arab. So just a woman in Western clothes but wearing a hijab would be fine, although it would be cool for them to wear the full black robes and veil as well at least for one of the models in such an addon pack. Also I hope the moderators remove your gross pics. You may find them amusing, but personally I don't enjoy seeing pics of naked men or naked fat women especially on a thread that I wish to be taken seriously. WOw! Those Iraqi heavy infantry look amazing! I hope you make some of those but also in the black uniforms (I believe some of the Republican Guards wore) as well. When it comes to buildings I see that you all are cooperating with the UKforces mod. That's good. Also you might want to work with the NOMAD team as well (the ones who made those nice Afghanistan maps). Them, Christoph, and Philcommando have all made some pretty good Middle Eastern buildings as well as some of the BAS members who worked on the buildings in the Tonal map...so as far as building go I think there are many options and many different mod teams who would probably be happy to assist. But I hope you guys make some good ones yourselves also. Anyhoo its looking good and should be interesting! Definitely check out the addons by the guys I mentioned above especially PhilCommando (or was it Phillipcommando?)! He's already made some nice Middle Eastern city block addons and he's always stated that his addons are free for anyone to use although I think he said that he would appreciate it if he was credited for his work. I'm not too familiar with the Israeli military, but I know some special forces, or intelligence units dress like women when working in enemy territory, although I don’t think OFP would allow you to hide your weapons under the clothing. miles teg 1 Posted January 10, 2004 Well the Lost Brothers isn't just an Israeli mod. It's an Israeli/Middle East conflict mod primarily from an Israeli standpoint, but also with alot of work put into Arab forces as well (Jordanian, Palistinian, Syrian, and Egyptian forces). Our Jordanian Commandos for example look even better then the IDF ones we have in my opinion. At any rate, you are correct we do want to have Arab civilians in our mod, but right now Vipersheart is trying to concentrate on finishing up the infantry and vehicles before he tries to make any civilians. But if someone else does this before us and doesn't mind sharing we'd be happy to use their Arab civilian addons in our mod's missions instead. As for the face pack, you are correct, No-One's Arab face pack is the only out right now I believe. However, if anyone out there is working on new Arab faces (edited to work in OFP not just a pic of a face please), please send them to me and I will update No-One's face pack with new faces and put your credits in the readme file. miles teg 1 Posted January 11, 2004 Nah, no Saudi stuff....although when we finish with the main mod stuff, I could perhaps ask Vipersheart if he could make a SANG addon (Saudi Arabian National Guard). The SANG troops are, from what I know of the Saudi Arabian military, are the best trained in their Army and performed very well in the first Gulf War from what I've heard.
