I think you'll also want the battery grip, the camera is more ergonomic with it and it holds two of the NiMh batteries. I'd say your choice of lenses depends on what you are going to use it for. The 18-55 mm canon kitlens is a good allround lens though not super wide angle due to the cropfactor smile_o.gif If you want a good 200 mm lens I'd get the canon one with the IS (Image Stabilisation) though it may cost more.

Just from my recent experience using a 35mm SLR with a 50mm prime lens in many situations, the most common problem that came up was not having a wide enough FOV in tight spots or on big lookouts. I think 50mm is equivalent to just over 30mm lens on the 350D, so I don't think I'd be happy with just a 28-200mm lens like Canon offers, or having to swap often. I also tend to try minimizing the amount of stuff I need to carry or travel with, so battery grip is out and no extra 70-X00's lenses to carry around.

The only canon lens I'm looking at now is the 17-85mm IS, but Sigma 18-200mm is still looking a lot better when comparing prices and telephoto range. I should get a chance to play around with both lenses on the weekend and get a better idea of what I want.

I am going to get a 350D as well. Here's what I'm going to be getting:

Yesterday I sent out three pictures to a free daily news magazine (circulation in Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton & Vancouver), and today my roomate called me while I was in class to tell me he that while he was reading the paper, he had seen a picture very similar to one I have hanging on a wall - then he realized my name was under it smile_o.gif.

Download the magazine as PDF here - Approx 5mb <- check page 22 smile_o.gif

So that put me in a mood to go out and take some more shots downtown after class (beautiful day for it anyway)

And now to top off my day I shall sit down with a beer and watch the Family Guy movie

I am going to get a 350D as well. Here's what I'm going to be getting:

Here are some sites to look at before buying...

General info:

www.stevesforums.com

www.dpreview.com

Shops:

http://www.bhphoto.com

http://www.sigma4less.com

The two shops are some of the highest recommended for reliability and low prices.  I read some stuff on stevesforums.com about sketchy dealers through amazon.com so be wary.  The 17-40mm is a strange choice when you already have the 18-55mm kit lens.  It's definitely a much better lens, but why bother with the kit lens?  It's also a bit slow, not ideal for low light.

Tovarish - Nice photos, I'm moving to Ottawa in mid October.

Ordered a Rebel XT and Sigma 18-200mm today, I'll have it next week.  Meanwhile I had some prints done from a short stopover in Fiji.  35mm film is still such a great medium, when you now how to use it.  Unfortunately I used an archaic manual SLR and underexposed almost everything, so the ones that could be saved are still a bit grainy and contrasty after adjusting levels. It also only had a 50mm prime lens, so too wide for wildlife and too narrow for landscapes. Can't wait for the new camera..

is it that quality when it comes from the camera or is it because of JPG compression? Looks interesting, where abouts were you?

ok I thought this would be cool to try to see how much a title could add to a picture so here goes

Click me! (above 100kb)

What do you guys think? The idea is that it is a reasonably boring picture on its own but I hoped the title would add to the interestingness (is that even a word? ) smile_o.gif

I like it, the picture on it's own would say little, as would the title on it's own would, but together they tell a story smile_o.gif

The first bunch of pics are taken on Kuata island, the last two are from Naviti. I would have preferred to stay on Kuata longer. Naviti is large but featureless, not nearly as interesting to explore. Kuata had lots of rock features and caves:

I love to see landscapes like that... Surely something else than here in denmark, where we don't even have cliffs smile_o.gif

Our tallest place here is called "himmelbjerget" (Heaven-mountain) - which isnt even a mountain... its just a hill on somewhat 160 metres, lol smile_o.gif

Keep em coming m8

Well I wasn't using the best setting as I'd changed it in the past and forgot to change it back, at the time of the pic it was raining and we were trying to put our tent up wink_o.gif IIRC this pic was taken at maximum quality with my girlfriend's PDA (same as mine) hence the appearance of half of my face to the right wink_o.gif

The PDA has a 1.2 megapixel camera so the quality isn't world class but it's handy to have around, as it is for reading books, listening to music, watching movies, playing games, etc. etc. wink_o.gif

The photo was taken in Lipno which is a popular tourist destination in the Czech Republic.

Man, Earl. You go everywhere, don't you? I've seen pics from all over the world from you.

Is it just an American thing where we hardly ever get to travel abroad? Seems like most people from other countries that post here have gone around the world.

I find it excruciatingly difficult just to find the time to visit my parents, let alone the expense and time required to go abroad.

I had planned on a trip to Chile this winter with my brother, but that fell through because of work and the sudden rise in airline costs to get there. Two weeks of vacation a year just doesn't seem like very much at all. confused_o.gif

I was in your situation, having never left Canada except one short trip into the US. Since I started working for BIS I've had the chance to go to Australia twice and Czech Republic once. I've tried to make the most of those travels by visiting other places along the way. It's made me realize how easy it can be to travel if you have simple needs (and flexible work schedule).

The tradeoff is living out of a backpack. When people ask me where I live, I never know how to answer. "I was in X, I'm staying with a friend in Y, and I'm on my way to Z". Some of my friends have bought houses for their families. I bought new socks. Any time I want to buy something new I have to think about what I will leave behind to make room in my backpack.

Chile would be a great place to go. I'm considering Peru in January or February, and maybe in the summer a cross-Canada roadtrip with friends.

Camping, last minute flights, cheap hotels. You can make it as cheap as you want whistle.gif

EDIT:

Skitrip to Austria for a week: 310 euro's everything included except lunch and drinks.

Survival trip to Belgium for a week: 240 euro's everything included.

Weekend in Dublin: 35 euro's a night for bed and breakfast, 55 euro's a day to rent a BMW, can't remember how much the flight was.

These are just some recent examples, pretty cheap IMO smile_o.gif

Well Europeans have a HUGE advantage over us Americans. You can just hop on a train and be on a beach in the Med within a couple of hours. Likewise, you could be in a completely alien culture within a sixty minutes sometimes. For me, a trip back to Chicago is (IIRC) about a 1200 mile journey, usually costing about $300-500 round trip for airfare. Now imagine everything within a 1200 mile radius of any major European city... you get the idea. Three continents, a large swath of languages and cultures, all kinds of history.

Now, look what's within 1200 miles of Chicago. We've got Canada, which is awesome, but it's not exactly exotic. Mexico is just out of reach. Anywhere you go it's America - and most of America is just like any other part of America. The people in California are going to be very similar to the people you'll meet in Texas or New York (believe it or not). Same stores (Target, WalMart, Urban Outfitters, A&F, whatever), restaurants (TGI Friday's, Red Lobster, Applesbees, etc.), and often the same tourist attractions (Six Flags). The only real differences are the landscapes, and even those are becoming more uniform (i.e. developed).

Certainly nothing compared to the differences you'll see between the English, French, German, Arab, Turk, Russian, Finnish and Egyptian people, culture and landscapes you'd see in a 1200 mile radius of any major city in Europe.

Yar, read the fine print on what Earl wrote. wink_o.gif

Flying into Frankfurt am Main is cheap enough over flying direct into Prague that the difference can turn into a significant chunk of a Eurail pass. Second trick is to stay at places where you don't want to turn the lights on to see why you're saving so much money in the 'Alcatraz' Hostel. Third trick is to eat cheap and make the most of it. You can run for two weeks on train platform Doner Kebabs and stashed breakfast rolls. Plus making tracks on foot from 10am to midnight everyday makes for a great workout. Just don't pass up opportunities because Marriott-style all-you-can-scavange breakfasts don't come standard at the $15USD equiv. hole in the walls.
