Supah 0 Posted August 8, 2005 Anyone care to explain what various UV and other filters do? I've been searching the internet for info but I come up with lots of different stuff and a lot of it seems. What effect would it exactly have if used with my 350D? if you're using an expensive objective or if you just don't want to put the cap on your objective every 3rd second, you should buy a UV filter. it does not influence the picture (or not much at least), but it protects your (expensive) lens from scratches and dust. such a filter can be pretty expensive as well, depends on the diameter of the objective, but it is better to scratch the filter for 60€ than the objective for 400€... there are lots of other filters, i have a catalogue here, i'll make a pic. /edit: nah, i'll post some info: there are lots of filters, polarizing (circular), infrared, blah, damn... *lookingForInfo* ... ah here: link! Why are there that many kinds and UV and infra red if its not much more then a fancy lenscap? There has to be more to it. Have you read this? Also, very nice pictures Gagamel! I found that site earlier and all the camera's mentioned on that site are old types and not DSLR's. The author talks about lensflare being a big problem when using filters, even when not using filters, with digital camera's. Well dunno what he has been trying to do with his camera but I've never managed to get lensflare on any of my camera's.

denoir 0 Posted August 8, 2005 supah, getting a lens flare is no problem: Note that this picture was extremely stupid of me, and you should never look directly into the sun when using a DSLR. The camera optics are designed so they take up as much light as possible and focus it. In short, it's a very good way of ruining your eyes. With regular digital cameras, it is no danger as the light gets focused on the sensor. In the case of the DSLR, the light gets mirrored directly to the optical viewfinder. Yeah but that would happen with a normal camera too? Oh well Went and bought a 70 - 300 mm lens and some filters to experiment with Pbb the most fun way to find out too ! denoir 0 Posted August 8, 2005 70-300mm as 35mm equivalent, or the actual focal length for the EOS350D?
Messiah 2 Posted August 8, 2005 Denoir, some of your photo's are just amazing i must say... alot of it must be down to the equipment, but thats only as good as the eye behind it... being a rather poor tatty student in the UK, i can only afford the usual standard digi cam, but have always considered purchasing some decent gear at some point... here's my best attempts at photography with a crappy olympus Soho, Berwick Street, UK. A very interesting subject I thought Westernbirt Aboretum, Near Bath, UK. This shot I kind of happened apon. Granted its not the best quality and there is some blurring. I wish i had a decent camera for this picture, as I though the tree's framed the dappeled light so perfectly. Nevermind. Westernbirt Aboretum, Near Bath, UK. One of my favourite pictures I managed on this camera. I just thought the colours were astounding. Hope you all like, although they're hardly on Par with your stuff

Actually, that shot is really nice. Technical "perfection" is IMHO too much of an issue with digital photography, and to be honest, photography in general. Creative shots, that arent technically perfected are in my opinion, much more aesthetically pleasing. Because that's what it's all about, creating something that has some sort of a message. All you lucky sods with DSLR's should check out the lensbaby., an excellent tool to get some really nice, and artistic shots. It's the first thing on my "to purchase after I get a DSLR"-list. Messiah 2 Posted August 8, 2005 supah, goob... thanyou... Yeah, i loved the picture and it was one of those moments when you're surrounded by nature and it creates its own picture for you... hard to explain perhaps... i just wish i had a better camera to get that better shot... but havnt exactly got the $$ to hand
Supah 0 Posted August 9, 2005 Those lensbabies look like a great way to break the Autofocus bits on your SLR. I'd think thrice before trying that.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what you mean by this. How could it break anything? It's a manual focus lens

To controll these there are very delicate bits attached to the body near the lens base. These lenses would exert a lot of pressure to those delicate bits. ozanzac 0 Posted August 9, 2005 One last one from the rally from me..... I reckon I might try to hunt down some nature next weekend to mix it up a little. Anywho, I couldn't resist showing this one once I figured out how to convert it from it's RAW form to JPEG. And the one below is just a birds eye view of one of the water splashes. I wanted to shoot some cars from that spot, but seconds after taking that shot, we were chased off the hill by an irate landowner! The funny thing is, when the stage safety cars came through, a police officer in one of the safety cars stopped his vehicle, and asked us how much we valued our lives, because apparently, we were in a dangerous position. (Yeah right, off line, Â on the inside of an off camber corner, up the bank, protected by a tree!, and ordered us to get over the fence of the property that just half an hour beforehand, we'd been chased from! We knew there was no time to argue, so we just jumped the fence to satisfy the officer, that yes, we were safety conscious...... which is a bit contradictory really, considering the land owner would have shot us on sight if he saw us on his property again!...... Once the cop was out of site, and taking our lives into our own hands rather than some hick sheep farmer, we jumped back over to the roadside of the fence...... again. That was on Saturday, there was a similar incident on sunday, in which a marshall at the Super Special tried to chase us through the forest after we decided to get a little adventurous and leave the designated spectator areas..... of course we out smarted him, resulting in some great shots, unattainable in the spectator areas. Unfortunatly ,there's too much emphasis on occupational health and safety down here, and the system is attempting to turn such a raw sport like Rallying, into a sanitized, typical nanny state affair. The real shame is, had I dared to go into semi-manual shutter priority mode, with semi-auto focus, I probably would have got some better pictures with greater clarity.... as I learnt just today that most of the shots were taken at 1/120 of a second, wheras the camera can shoot at 1/2000 in the right mode. Oh well, practice is the only way I spose.
Supah 0 Posted August 9, 2005 Nice shots ozanzac! Yeah practice is the only way to go but that is also the fun in it! Seeing your shots improve as you learn new things The great thing with digital photography is that it allows experimenting without immediatly having a cost attached as there is no developing of film etc.
Gagamel 0 Posted August 9, 2005 @ozanzac Nice pics. Here are the last pictures from "Der Dachstein". You can see the village "Ramsau". The aerial ropeway station in the valley. Many Hollows.
