NKVD 0 Posted October 3, 2003 Hello, Just wanted to know, why is on NVIDIA cards you can set option of texture quality up to 4096, and on ATI cards it goes only up to 2048 ?? Is there any difference between 4096 and 2048 textures ? p.s. Ive had both of these cards - FX 5900 and Radeon 9800 Pro, but I haven't noticed a difference between textures (maybe Im blind), and it looks better on Radeons, imho... Suma, could you clarify why is that ? ATI cards can't go up to 4096 ? Is there will be fix in next patch to set textures up to 4096 ? Thanks...

If drivers are reporting video card is capable of max. texture dimension 2048, this is what we allow you. The 2048 may be real limitation of ATI hardware, or it may be a driver bug. Contacting ATI support might get you the answer. This is purely theoretical question, anyway, as there are no textures of this size used anywhere in the game (maybe in some user addons, but even this will be very infrequent). Sidenote: memory requirements of 4096x4096 textures are huge - one such texture requries 10.5 MB of memory (mipmaps included) on the video card when in DXT1 (compressed) format.
