Obviously this would make the various interrogations rather problematic, should the US respect this Geneva rule.

Hmm, kept in cages? Drugged and hogtied during transport?

Yeah I think as a general rule they are trying to make nutcases of everyone in that camp by drugging them up and cutting them off from any sort of reality and advice.  Also they have specialists there that regularly tell them they are insane... there you go, tell someone they are insane for two years and keep them isolated, they might think they really are.  

I hope you were being sarcastic, but what would be the point in turning the prisoners into fruit loops? Look at the running costs and staffing levels of a psychiatric hospital in comparison to a regular prison, psychos take more and better trained staff to be looked after. Secondly what kind of useful information about al Qaeda or ansar al-Islam or any other terrorist organisation these people allegedly belong to can you get if they are incapable of rational thought. You need reliable minds for reliable intelligence.

I was not, it's true.  They will just deport the prisonners once they are deemed useless to anyone.

No I will not elaborate on torture and information extraction techniques, I'm not qualified.

Anyway, the war on terrorism rings into Canada, but in a surprizing way. The terrorists are not the usual "arabic alquada", but some institution which is coalition friendly. What happened is a prissoner was released from Quantanamo bay concentration camp ( because I think that's what prisonners do there, they concentrate on how not to go nuts) a few weeks ago, 20-year-old Abdurahman Khadr. he was denied any contact with Canadian officials to arrange return to Canada instead of Afghanistan. He wanted to go to Canada, but they deported him to Afghanistan anyway saying Canda did not want him. This guy had some friends of the family though and got his butt back to Canada eventually through the UK. And now he has a lawyer representing him in order to straighten out what the Americans call justice over there.

Yesterday his lawyer received death threats from what he says was an "institution", and so he has decided to stop defending/representing the 20 year old. (makes sense) He was basically tearfull when speaking, he says because there is not justice in this supposed Democracy in Canada. Depending on who and from which institution made the call, it seems he is right. And the terrorists are now the person/people who made the call to him.

Now this, this is one of the most interesting discussions I have seen. It is a 50 minute recording, and not a bore at all.

I am unsure how many of you have already seen it, perhaps not so many, or I have missed yet another important post.

The most interesting part about this is to in practice see how a civilized country that is based on a well defined fair legal system is willing to throw away all its rules and resort to barabarism once it feels threatened enough. Face it, the willingness to throw away the basic ideal defined through the constitution was an effect of post-WTC attack hysteria.

The irony of it is that it's exactly what bin Laden and his merry men had wet dreams about. They managed to shake America so much that it's willing to throw away all its basic ideals. Bin Laden could have not hoped for more.

That is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard.  You can do a lot of things with almanacs, so a lot of people carry them.  And no terrorist would be stupid enough to walk around with an almanac now.

Now some poor librarian is going to get mugged for walking around with a new almanac.

The same flight, BA 223, was detained on the tarmac at Washington's Dulles International Airport on Wednesday for several hours shortly after landing.

FBI and Transportation Security Administration agents questioned passengers and crew for several hours aboard the flight and no arrests were made.

"We cancelled the flight for security reasons given to us by the UK government," the BA spokesman told Reuters. He did not give further details about the type of information given by the government.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Transport said she was unable to comment on whether the cancellation was a result of a specific threat.

The BA spokesman said alternative arrangements had been made for the 180 passengers on Thursday's flight, which had been scheduled to leave Heathrow airport at 10:05 a.m.

Neither of the other two daily flights had been cancelled, the spokesman said.
