Far cry's unscripted ai behaviour

Recommended Posts

The single player demo is still goddamn tough to beat at normal level. The graphics however rock. The phyics engine is the best so far and the sound is realy ....realy realy incredible! smile_o.gif

Matter of taste i quess but i found the sounds very lame. About the AI, i think they are not so great, many times they just run back and forth in few meter radius.

any other ATI users have the flickering-black-triangle-on-rocks-problem ?

you can solve it with the rTool, d/l here.

install and open the tool, then apply the Trilinear Aniso-Filtering (App) for 3d, done.

Some usefull commands you can type in the console(~) during a game :

\p_deathtime 9999   ;dead body disappear-time, no fps-impact

\r_glare = 0 ;makes the environment less gloomy and 2-5 fps increase (default is 2)

\r_displayinfo 1 ;shows alot of stats including fps, amount of polygons rendered etc

\r_WaterReflections 1 ;enabled by default, very high fps-drain but beautiful

\r_WaterRefractions 1 ;enabled by default, disable it and the sun blinds you in the water (no fps-impact)

\e_water_ocean_sun_reflection 1 ;how sun-reflections appear in the water(default 0). I did'nt see any fps-loss or gain but like it on.

If you want these to stay active every time you start the demo you can put them in playercfg.lua (open in notepad). But remember to remove the "/"-tag and put "=" between the command and the value.

Here's what I've added to my cfg:

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">p_deathtime = 9999

r_glare = 0

e_water_ocean_sun_reflection = 1

Sorry to throw a wrench in here, I have just tried the demo and I am un-impressed. The sounds are Holywood, the shooting is Holywood, the characters are Holywood...

Yeah Unscripted AI, all they do is defy the forces of nature by accelerating back and forth so you don't hit them. They're as dumb as it gets. In the demo they even performed a heli insertion right over my head (and if you've ever been in hte military or read a manual, you are not advised to do that over a hot zone) tounge_o.gif

Very poor game. Graphics are... Turok 2 style? or is it Turok 3.

Make sure you jack all the settings up before you go complaining about graphics smile_o.gif

Here's some interesting console commands too-

r_rendermode 1 (Normal)

r_rendermode 2 (Hard Colors, a bit darker)

r_rendermode 3 (Cel-Shaded)

r_rendermode 4 (High Contrast)

Playing the demo in cel-shaded mode is quite interesting tounge_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]I'll believe coordinated AI action when I see it.  Apparently individuals who d/l and compiled HL2s source code found that much of HL2's "unscripted" AI action wasn't really so unscripted at all.  I can't say, not having played the game [no shit I haven't played it, there's no demo or full version] but I would be willing to bet that within 2 hours of playing the game, it becomes apparent that the AI have say 5 or 6 actions they'll take, and everything is just a composite of those actions.

Well I guess you'll have to see when you play it then. Not much I can say that will convince you I reckon.

Quote[/b] ]Like hell conversation is not scripted.  No matter how large the pool of possible animations and conversations is, it is little removed from totally static conversations triggered by the player, as seen in a billion other games.  They're still wholly predetermined.

This depends on what type of conversation you are refering to. If you are talking about player to AI conversation or vice versa, then yes, it will be scripted. That is necessery to drive the story element forward in any game. As for AI to AI conversations, those are random and not pre determined events.

Quote[/b] ]A scripted event is one that is predetermined, not necessarily one that happens in precisely the same manner.  In any case, given enough retries, you'll quickly find that it IS happening in a number of precisely similar ways.

A matter of definition I guess. But to most people I think a scripted event is an event that is triggered at a certain point, and always playes out the same way. Much like the scripted missions in for example Medal of Honor.

Quote[/b] ]Uhhh.  You're trying to tell me that in all other games, when you shoot an enemy and the AI [dumbly] moves to the source of the sound - that is scripted?  Try again.  Even though it's adding a level of complexity by actually going through the motions of communicating information between the individual AI, it's not *THAT* great.

No, I am telling you that when reinforcements are magically called in during such events, then its scripted. Like when a door opens up and more AI rush out, or some bunch of guys suddenly arrive from a previously cleared area. That wont happen in Far Cry.

I finally got around to playing it, and it looks like I was 100% correct.

*chuckle* tounge_o.gif

I too was unimpressed. Why reinvent the wheel? If this is the new path for gaming AI, I say we should go back to OFP1...

I am impressed by the indoor/outdoor fluidity though, and the graphics are pretty sweet...

No question that it's a beautiful engine, and the graphics alone have kept me playing longer than the core mechanics ever could have. Unfortunately I spend more time jacking around than trying to accomplish the mission.

ROFLMAO! biggrin_o.gif

unfortunately my poor 750mhz is not going to cut it, so maybe after i upgrade my PC when OFP2 comes out, i'll get to play demo.

note to BIS: yes, my PC upgrade will be decided upon OFP2 spec tounge_o.gif

To be honest, I have a hard time taking people seriously when they say the graphics in Far Cry aren't that good. I cant help but to wonder if they are running the game on extreme low graphical settings, or if they just need glasses. On my PC it looks amazing.

As for the AI, heck yeah, they do stupid things. But I have also seen them pull of stuff thats pretty down right smart.

Last time I heard AI is still one of the key things being worked on though, so I am looking forward to the finished product. At any rate, its still a fun game to play just because the freedom of movement and non-linearity.

Any chance or "real" iron sights being put in? I had been reading the official forums but it's not very structured so hard to keep up with things sad_o.gif

Crytek just got busted for using pirated software:

Crytek Busted (in German)

Rough translation:

"Far Cry: Raid with the developers 04.02.2004 15:30 o'clock - that far Cry developer Crytek had this morning attendance of the criminal investigation department Coburg: The officials scanned the B?ros of the developer and the dwelling of the head of the company together with a quantity of the Bavarian auxiliary police and several computer specialists. According to first Sch?tzungen of the police Crytek used illegaly software for play production and caused thus a damage within the six-digit range. Evidence was placed already surely. The Gesetzesh?ter had become attentive by the reference of a former Crytek coworker. Ubisoft and Crytek the procedure so far did not commentate - whether and in what respect there are effects on the Ver?ffentlichung of far Cry are not yet well-known."

No, they havent been busted for anything. There was a raid, but noone has been charged yet and there has definately not even been a sentence passed. So until there is actually any proof of a crime, I doubt they could be considered "busted".

Sadly, I doubt it. I suggested it directly to the devs at a presentation but it doesnt seem like they went for it. Hopefully, someone can mod or patch it.

Coburg (Bavaria, Germany), 04.Februar 2004

Today at 9.00 am, there was a raid at Crytek's offices in Coburg, Germany. Due to an alleged claim of a disgruntled ex-intern, Crytek´s office complex was investigated for using more copies of a software brand with the incorrect number of licenses purchased.

The management of Crytek is grateful for the diligence of the German Police Department concerning protected software and fully cooperated in every way. As a software devloper, Crytek is always interested in properly obtaining and utilizing third party software. Development of the eagerly awaited Far Cry was only delayed for three hours while police cleared the matter with Crytek and it's management staff.

Despite false allegations that have appeared in various media and forums, no inventory or personel were affected in any way. Crytek would like to assure its fans that completion of Far Cry remains on track.

Continuing the discussion from my other thread:

Well I purcahsed the game yesterday.

What can I say....I'm blown away.

Even on my Radeon 9000 I am able to pump out graphics like this

1.jpg

I get shivers down my spine, it feels like I am THERE, it's incredibly realistic, and the physics are just mind blowing.

32.jpg

This game is definately worth checking out. Only supports ATI and GeForce chipsets, but patches are being made to support more!

Quote[/b] ]well i like the game much, but when i finished it, i thought, why pay so much money for a game, that is played through in about 2 days?!?

and the MP is also some sort of crap in my opinion...

but the physics, graphic-effects etc are great... (=game from germany )

Don't forget Metalmalte, Modifications are being made smile_o.gif And besides it never hurts to go inside the editor and create your own scenarios smile_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]The game really looks amazing, but iron sights, iron sights...that yellow crosshair just ruins it for me. Well, still I can just dream of playing it with those kinds of graphics, 1 ghz CPU here.

I think you can turn them off Gollum1 smile_o.gif

Had the game since release date, the editor is pure genius. smile_o.gif Although the sp wasn't too great the assault mode in MP is excellent, and future patches promise the ability of Co-op, CTF and C&H biggrin_o.gif

Can you believe it The next day after I posted my last comment on this topic I went to the store to buy it. All the seller could tell me.

"you are a few hours too late, we took it out of the shelves just a couple of minutes ago. Too brutal for german standards. You gotta wait a few weeks till they bring out a german version."

That reminds me of Soldier of Fortune (german version). In this "Kraut version", the enemies were greyish, had nails in their face and were supposed to be robots. Yeah lol.

Hey hooo.. as always the only market where a german product does not work is in Germany. Goddamn Square-heads!

I suppose you could buy the child version from the shop, and then aquire the full version off the net. AS long as you pay your dues, I don't see any moral issues with it.

whats w/ this crap about no violent video games in Germany? isnt your society so open when it comes to things like sex that it could make Howard Stern blush and yet some politition gets a hair up his or her ass over images of polygons and pixels killing each other? pretty strange. is this only for video games or do movies apply as well?

edit: just one question, whats the reconmended system requirments for FarCry?
