I guess posting your system spec, and also the soundcard type/manufacturer if possible would help out alot.

Is your motherboard based on the VIA chipset?

Do you have the latest drivers for your SoundMax audio card? Is this an audio card or an on-board sound chip?

What Nvidia Detonator driver version do you have installed?

Soundblaster = Crackling Sound

Get an Audigy 2 man, they are much, MUCH better. The Soundblaster line hasn't been updated for a while.

Clicking on Support would have taken you to a page with links to the various OEM's sites. On the ASUS site you can find the SoundMAX drivers here -- the file is about 19MB in size.

I had a SoundBlaster Live! for quite a while, and finally got fed up with it. For the last week, I've had an Audigy 2, and not only has the sound quality improved greatly, but the CPU utilization has gone down and the frame rate improved as a result.

You can find Audigy 2 cards (non-Platinum, non-Extigy) for under $70, there is no reason to settle for a SoundBlaster.

It sure works great for me.

The Soundblaster Live! was OK, but very picky about the drivers -- the only ones that were stable and didn't seem to cause any crashes etc were in a 200+ MB archive I found on Compaq's FTP site. And even with those drivers the volume ramping was screwed up to the point that I could hear vehicles long before my teammates could.
