Schoeler 0 Posted July 21, 2003 The problem with the Phoenix is that the damned missiles are so old, the solid rocket propellant has degraded. This means that if the missile even works, the range is severely curtailed. I have an inside source on this as Raytheon is here in my hometown of Tucson. Also have heard that as it has been designed for use against russian bombers threatening US carriers it will be allot less succesfull against fighters. Badgerboy 0 Posted July 21, 2003 @ July 21 2003,04:54)]All about the AIM-54 Pheonix. Nothing like simultaneous engagement of 6 targets from 100 miles off. You can have all the Archers in the world and it won't matter if you never get inside of 30 miles of your enemy The only way a AIM-54 could hit a target at 100nm was if the bandit was slow, low, and not attempting any manouvers. To engage a fighter sized target, the realistic engagement range would be more like 40nm. (And as the F14 is getting phased out, the Phoenix won't be around much longer)
Schoeler 0 Posted July 21, 2003 The U.S. needs to go ahead and develop the ALRAAM project to replace the F-14/Phoenix team with the F/A-18F/ALRAAM team for a modern American interceptor capability.
