Well yeah, they're close to toys. I mean, they're the most unrealistic sort of thing out there, with all those heavy weapons and armor amounts. Surely, no other tank has tried to fit a field gun, a couple rocket pods on, and a 30mm cannon on all at once! That's just plain nonsense! Really.

Lol imagine some country would put something like that on the battlefield. Like about 150ton´s 40km/h (well if there would be a engine cababal of that)

And with armor where the RPG´s would not even scratch the painting...

the infantry would shit their pants.... biggrin_o.gif i would

While I agree with your point, if you take into account the BMP-3M and BDM-3M IFV's from Russia, that's exactly what you get. A 90mm main gun, 30mm coax, ATGM's fired from the turret, etc...

Seems like they're trying to make up for some shortcoming... Heh.  wink_o.gif

Now, there are some people that are saying the US should do something similar with it's MBT's to make them more survivable in hostile, target-rich enviroments, such as recent Iraq.

While the M1A1/A2's are still the "king" of the battlefield, they still could be improved. Some are calling for a up-armed and up-armored MBT, ( possibly an improved M-60, with a stretched chassis, Abram's style turret, higher output diesel powerplant, additional ammo storage/mounted infantry seating forward of the engine compartment. ) covered with bolt-on reactive armor tiles, 120mm smoothbore, capable of firing ATGM, cannister rounds, and mortar rounds. GAU-19 12.5mm rotary coaxial. 60mm mortar like the one in the Merkava's turret. Cuppola's similar to those of the AAV-7's. ( M-134 7.62 minigun, Mk-19 40mm GLMG. ) The only other thing it could need is a four-round box launcher for Stingers or Hellfires, and/or a Hydra-70 seven-round launcher, mounted on the turret.

Basically, we just follow Isreal's lead in our tank design... The Merkava, and Sabra's are just what's needed on battlefields such as those found in Iraq. We need more emphasis on anti-personel weaponry, in urban enviroments. The M1 Abrams is too expensive, and fuel ineffecient to be wasted in the MOUT battlefield. It's best used in open terrain, and for sprinting short distances, using "Shock and Awe" to capture ground. But in the narrow streets and alleys of the small villages and towns of Iraq ( for instance ) it's a sitting duck for an millitiaman armed with an RPG. The Abram's is under-armored in the rear, and 25mm round's accidently fired by a Bradley IFV disabled one in Baghdad IIRC. An RPG-7 through the rear deck, or engine grill would certainly do the same. These weaknesses are being closely studied, and should be remedied shortly, fourthwith. But in the meantime, we've got thousands of Cold-War era M1A's and M60 MBT's that could fill the gap, in an inexpensive manner.

Sorry, if I'm OT... just my two cents.

Yeah, why havn't they done that? Sure as hell sort out this Iraqi problem with all the hit and run attacks. Send a tank out with RPG Inpenitrable armour on and the Iraqis wouldn't be so tough then. Might be alittle pointless for OFP if you need a bloody Nuke just to knock the damn thing over tounge_o.gif

Why haven't they made a tank that big and heavy? Because it would sink into the ground under it's own weight, couldn't be transported without the largest ships, would collapse most bridges, and would require the largest engines just to move it. It would be a sitting target for hit and run RPG attacks, and eventually it would be disabled, because the RPG/RPO's are going to eventually damage the drive.

You want a cool hypothetical that could actually be built with current technology, and wouldn't have the many of the problems associated with the super-heavy Uber MBT?

Look at the LCAC, ( Landing Craft, Air Cushion ) the LCAC can move over land, at decent speeds, and fuel economy. It could be covered with armor panels, and reactive armor tiles. It could be armed with two Abrams-style turrets at the front, port and starboard quarters, and a MLRS launcher, or VLS in the center-line/midships position. Let's call this concept a Main Battle Hover Craft...

Now, MBHC would still be vulnerable, and simply too large to be anything more than a bonfire in an urban setting. So you don't use it there... You smash and pulverize the enemy at long range with it, and send in the M-60i's ( Improved... see above. ) for the MOUT work.

BTW: There have been up-armed LCAC prototypes tested to assist in softening up fortified enemy positions on beacheads prior to the main force landing. They were armed with a stabilized 25mm chaingun, a Mk-19 40mm GLMG, and several .50 cal mounts, IIRC.

Can't say I would be too keen on seeing it from the front though!! biggrin_o.gif

I'll be Van Dammed, but I just looked high and low for ANY pic's I could find of that prototype... and turned up nothing. I think the first I saw of this might have been in Jane's IDR, or perhaps Proceedings magazine. It was supposed to be an armed escort for the main force of a landing MEU, leading the majority of LCAC's. I'm fairly certain it was to do with the OMFTS ( Operational Maneuver From The Sea ) concept. I'll try again when I have more time.

Damn, the more I think about it, the more I can come up with lots of great modern tanks (or from the last 20 years) that could be made.

Hopefully some of that info might fire up some addon makers to make something new and unique!

Chris G.

aka-Miles Teg<GD>

I'd love to start a new addon project. It's just that I don't have an idea for a interesting tank/vehicle. Actually the main problem is the lack of good work material that will allow a tolerable time scale.

I'd hate to make a model without haveing blueprints/outlines and correct measures. Most prolly you won't find any for the rather rare types on the internet!?

Hmmm there should be a way to get Blue´s for almost every tank.

Its your taste of what you like.

You name us a tank and we could help you searching them.

And you give us planty of Screens of you progress.

Deal?

Sounds very good to me! Any preferences? I allready made contact to a guy who has an almost finished model of a "wiesel" to help him make skins for it. But this is not agreed yet.

So I'm open to suggestions! Or If anyone allready got a good model and want's it finished (model or texturewise)!?

Best tank ever, even though kinda pointless in OFP. Maybe OFP2 if the multiple gunner thingie will be adressed.

Still.... *droooool* smile_o.gif

I'm aware of this but due to the nature of the "one-gunner-only" thingie, the mod will not be what a Warhammer mod could be. Well, if OFP2 has some improvements in this field, I'll start a proper 40k mod myself, but right now I think it's pointless.

We should stik to the nature of this topic.

BTW, I rader have reallistic modells.

The bigest problem we have is the shortage of deccent West armours. I know that the valance between West and East is bad, and West have a good advantage in that, but wen it comes to armored vehicles or tanks the addon makers seems to have done a good job for East and no much for West.

Straying off topic, but they're MBTs from Heavy Gear. The top one is a Aller and the bottom one is a Visigoth. The Aller weighs about 67 tons while the Visigoth is 58 tons (metric). The Aller has a railgun while the Visigoth has a field gun... both have similar sub weapons (like, of course, machine guns).

They were probably based off of real-world counterparts somewhere, but I wouldn't know which ones. In the meantime, they're not as far fetched as many people would think, but like some other guys said, the usefulness of a MBT is running low in modern warfare.
