Silent N Deadly 0 Posted September 20, 2006 I don't know what your talking about Hooahman but Beaner means something totally different for me. Im sorry if it really offended you, but it means nothing of what you said. Did you just make that up or is it actually mean that? Â Please change your name too Hooahman. Hooahman is a term that is very derogatory and insulting to my religion and culture. I'm suprized I've never seen that before.

Major Fubar 0 Posted September 22, 2006 Why is this thread locked, while this thread is allowed? No offence to Steve Irwin, may he rest in peace, but I feel it's wrong that some celebreties are apparently "worth" a thread while others are not. It's not like Roger "Syd" Barrett was an indy-artist that nobody heard of. Well, I guess I should add my 2 cents as well, since I was the one who locked it. By the letter of the law, we should really instantly shut down any and all threads that don't fall within the guidelines of "about wars, military conflicts and everything what pertinent to Army". As a courtesy to the community, we allow some leeway with this. If it were strictly up to me, I wouldn't allow ANY obituary threads, as they inevitably lead to someone posting something that upsets someone else. Not everybody is going to like or dislike the focus of the thread. Also remember that moderators are people, just like you, and not machines. Each of us do our best to impartially enforce the forum rules, but the human condition being what it is, we all interpret those rules slightly differently. For the record, I am a huge Floyd fan and was very sorry to heard about Syd. Absolutely no disrespect was intended by closing the thread.

JdB 151 Posted October 3, 2006 Why isn't HTML allowed, in posts, signatures etc? Too much possibilities for spammers to exploit Suprising that BI forums hasn't had large amounts of spam yet as it's a large forum

JdB 151 Posted October 4, 2006 Suprising that BI forums hasn't had large amounts of spam yet as it's a large forum That's because I have to manually process every new forum account registration until we can get CAPTCHA integrated. But you can't see from a username or e-mail address whether it's a spammer/spambot can you? Seems more like a calculated guess to me Maybe that's why some people are still complaining that they can't access this forum after registering or after they change their e-mail address... dm 9 Posted October 4, 2006 Most spam bots still have rediculous names like this: so its still fairly easy to tell.
j w 0 Posted October 4, 2006 Well some people have like cryptical names, can these fall down that drain to?
dm 9 Posted October 4, 2006 The email addresses are usually tied to some "@randomcrap.info" address. And they often [like 99% of the time] have a webaddress for some "buyviagra.tv" style site. Honestly, telling spam bots and humans apart is still VERY easy.

But you can't see from a username or e-mail address whether it's a spammer/spambot can you? No, I google the Email address, or (for example) if the Email address is something like mail.ru, which are 80% spam bots I check if the IP address is Russian, if not I generally ban them. Trust me it's not, we're getting roughly 100-200 a week new signups from bots and it's about 70/30 with 30% being obvious.
dm 9 Posted October 4, 2006 I must get lucky with the forums I administer then [Edit] Considering the workload this must cause, would it not be better to invest a few days into upgrading the forum with a captcha device, rather than spending time googling email and IP addresses? Placebo 29 Posted October 4, 2006 Considering the workload this must cause, would it not be better to invest a few days into upgrading the forum with a captcha device, rather than spending time googling email and IP addresses? Yes, hence the failed forum upgrade of a couple of months ago, the problem there related to existing user accounts containing -- which messed up existing forum posts which we're trying to work on resolving so we can upgrade, get the benefits such as bug fixed and CAPTCHA as well as retaining the years of archived forum posts. BraTTy 0 Posted October 11, 2006 I just happen to notice that the ARMA section has no "forum rules" pinned at the top and it appears important as some users are coming here to just use that topic (ARMA webpage directs them there) Also I understand that with ARMA coming a regroup of the forums are necessary and I can't wait. Just that the O2 sections are off the main etc...I don't travel them a s frequently because they are almost hidden (alot of new users prolly don't see them)
Placebo 29 Posted October 11, 2006 Yes that's a good point, and it's about time I create ArmA's squads and fanpages forum

Placebo 29 Posted October 11, 2006 Well I could add them but the forum rules in their current state are a bunch of over bloated confusing crap so I plan to completely re-write and simplify the whole lot at some point
