Nz man building cruise missile

Building a Cruise Missile in His Backyard

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand handyman with a passion for jet engines says he is building a cruise missile in his backyard using parts and technology freely available over the Internet.

Bruce Simpson, a 49-year-old Internet site developer, has a site entitled "A DIY Cruise Missile" on which he says he was prompted to build the missile because so many people had told him it could not easily be done.

"I decided to put my money where my mouth is and build a cruise missile in my garage, on a budget of just US$5,000," he said on his Web site http://www.interestingprojects.com

"I like to think of this project as a military version of 'Junkyard Wars'," he says referring to a television program about teams building big machines from scrapyard materials.

He said he would publish step-by-step instructions on his Web site about how to make the jet-powered missile, which would be able to fly 100 km (60 miles) from his home, north of the main city of Auckland, in less than 15 minutes.

The missile could carry a small warhead weighing 10 kg (22 lb), would be hard to detect on radar, and would be impossible for the New Zealand Air Force to stop, Simpson said.

"Obviously the goal is not to provide terrorists or other nefarious types with plans for a working cruise missile but to prove the point that nations need to be prepared for this type of sophisticated attack from within their own borders."

The New Zealand Herald newspaper reported Simpson had imported a radio control transmitter, global positioning equipment, and a flight control system, among other things, without encountering problems from New Zealand customs.

"We are aware of the initiative," a Defense Force spokesman told Reuters, but declined any further comment.

What do u mean? u can get jet engines for planes and u used to be able to buy small rocket motors, without a license.

No, clue! I was on a visit in the local mosque where I was invited by a very kind man..his name was Mullah Tarek or something..and he was kind of important cause he was the only one to drink out of a silver cup and his beard was kind of grey and long. Well anyway he said he liked young people and thinks that hobbies are important to develop professional aspirations...and that he would like to help me funding my hobby and then he gave me something in a box (made in N-Corea) and I should start with this. But I shouldnt try it out in the backyard but wait untill he tells me where and when the time has come. He said he would first need to find a safe place to blow it off so my parents and employer would not find out. And then he asked me to take the exit in the back and I should not drop the box cause he scratches would look ugly!

Sounds fascinating and kind of erotic. But are you sure his second name was Tarek rock.gif

This is just what we need. I can see it now.

*saddam hussein's hideout*

Hussein: OK, we lost the war, who didn't see that one coming, right?

All: right.

Information Minister: Well I...

Hussein: Shut up, you've caused more problems than you've solved. Anyway, we need to find some way to strike back. Now, we could spend another $10,000 paying off some terrorist to blow up something like we always do...

Hussein Peon: Uh, sir, you might want to take a look at this website...

Hussein: *reading*Build your own cruise missile...

Heeeeey!

Anyway. tounge_o.gif

edit- looking at this "build your own nuke" website I noticed something.

Quote[/b] ]I guess I should put in a disclaimer here so I don't get sued:

Americium-241 is a potentially dangerous isotope if it is taken into the body in soluble form. It decays by both alpha activity and gamma emissions and it would concentrate in the skeleton. Also, constructing a home-built nuclear weapon has many obvious risks to yourself and to the people in your community. If you decide to go ahead with this: DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK!

He is not worried about being sued by the public after some terrorist made a crater. He is worried about being sued by a moron who didn't do it right. crazy_o.gif

Just goes to show how innovative us New Zealanders are. WE flew a plane before your beloved Wright borthers! We did We did! Pitty no one was there to record it. Richard Pierce was the man.

On with the cruise missile. Interesting project. Hopefully it will make governments wake up about the threat from a DIY cruise missile, although you must ask, how many people would have thought about it before it became global news? Luckily his cruise missile can only take a very small warhead, just as long as it's not chemical or biological it should be fine...

And as long as people don't go expanding the design...

As for makin a nuclear bomb, read Tom Clancy's Sum of All Fears. All you need to get started on making a Thermonuclear device is an old Israeli nuke smile_o.gif

Yeah, and I invented a cloaking device. Can't seem to find the thing now though, pity nobody was there to record it. tounge_o.gif ;)

well its a hotly debated issue, it has been on a news recently to about people who build a replica of his design and engine and going to fly it, i heard about it first as a kid, he was meant to have flown some many weeks before the wright brothers, his design wasnt to bad looking more modern than the wright brothers one.

The unfortunete thing is that there is very little known about his feat outside of New Zealand, and a google search on him turns up blank. Still, the claim he was the first man to fly is not just a unfounded conspiracy made up by a few bored people. He was a known inventor and he definetely make planes, the only thing stopping him from being given the title of first man to fly is that there is no evidence such as film or photo whereas there is for the Wright Brothers. He is quite well known in New Zealand but I doubt his fame spreads outside of NZ because besides making planes, he didn't do anything too significant in terms of inventions to get him world wide aclaim. If however, proof did surface showing he did fly before the Wright borthers, well....

Another achievement by a New Zealander was the splitting of the atom, done by Ernest Rutherford.

This along with other work he did helped us make nuclear bombs! Biography on Ernest Rutherford

Anyway, enough patriotic pap about achievements of New Zealanders (did you know that in North Africa and Italy durring WW2, the 2cnd New Zealand division fought in more battles than any other allied division?).

I find it quite amusing how NZ officials have responded to this DIY cruise missile project. All they seem willing to say is that they are aware of the project.

Hehe. The NZDF is always a laugh to get info out of. A few years back an RAAF F-111 was showing off over auckland. I rang up the Base in Whenuapai and asked if it was gonna land anywhere where I could take some photo's. the relpy:

"What F-111? I think you are mistaken sir, there are now a few ex-military jets owned by private interests..."

"no. It ias F-111G. I watched it swing its variable geometry wing all the way forward. It has a Pave-Tack pod sticking out from under its nose..."

"Oh. Well maybe they are just visiting. It's not scheduled to land here..."

Ok, Re: Richard Pearsons first flight. The Smithsonian Museum in Washington and National Geographic agreed a few years back to Richard Pearse completing the first "Power Assisted Flight". The Wright Brothers keep the first Powered Flight. I just rangup my dad and asked him, cause he wrote a book about R.Pearse 10 years ago. It was actually witnessed, but the witness died during WW1 ( his Milk Boy and the guy that owned the farm next to him). It was also recorded on still film, which was analysed and deemed true. ( they worked out height from the shadows and speed from the blur etc...)

I just tried a google search too. Nothing. Wierd... rock.gif
