I will soon be joining the armed forces in the UK. Do you people advise the army of the Navy?

I have already had interviews for the army but I can still change my mind. Please only answer if you are/have served in the Army/Navy

thankyou

In the army, those specialization areas fall under the signal corps.

should you really be joining the armed forces if you don't know which one to join?

Military service isnt compulsory here remember

First decide why you really want to join the military, and what you want to get from it, be honest with yourself, remember being in the services is not like a 9 to 5 job.... its hard work, you are paid for 24-7, so that means you can work at anytime in any place, you cant phone in sick and take a day off because 'you just dont feel like it today'

Decide what aspects of the Army or Navy interest you. If you are not wanting to be a frontline soldier/grunt, pick a service that will give you a trade that you could use in civillain life when you leave, such as mechanic/electrician/driver/engineer

or telecomunications specialist etc.

Dont join if you are expecting to get rich and makes lots of money, (dont get a NAAFI store card! lol) although if you are posted to obscure places you can save money quite easily.

There are good and bad times in the military, but the good always outweigh the bad. There are times when you are bored shitless, tired, cold and wet, other times it feels like your on top of the world, you can do anything. You have the opportunity to do things the average guy in the street would never have the chance to do in his lifetime.

In my opinion what you will get is some of the best training in the world, some of the best friends you will ever have, and also do and see things a civillian will never appreciate or experience.....

The Royal Navy, it is one of the finest fighting organisations in the world with a picture perfect record, although i wouldn't join it, the food in the RAF is okay for me.

If you want to do signals then good choice, i've met a lot of really solid characters from those lot.

Basically the UK military forces are some of the best in the world, that comes from our superior training and our experiences all over the world in the past couple of hundred years.

Hopefully our military personnel prowess won't be wasted and insulted anymore by going to countries like Iraq in unjust wars to satisfy corporative greed, when we actually need to defend our country we won't be able to mad_o.gif

I wish you best of luck in all the training, the American basic training is a walk in the park for what you are about to do, my legs are still aching after i did that shit 5 years ago! The medical evacs under fire and 15 mile stamina runs afterwards ain't much fun.

To be fair, the Royal Navy hasn't lost a major war in over 300 years. That is a very impressive, unbroken combat record.

And the royal navy wasn't involved in the revolutionary war? I seem to remember a few blockades.

The Royal's Navy's part in that war was very succesful, we blew the shit out the French and the reveloutionaries, however the French Infantry, their advice and supplies to the reveloutionaries and overall numbers resulted in the British infantry being defeated (well boundaries drawn).

The reveloutionary war didn't gain much, just the country was split and America was still controlled by colonies.

The Royal Navy is not bad at all. I won't mention the Battle of Lake Champlain in the War of 1812 where the Americans defeated her ;)

NoLips - Grow up

FSPilot - The point was that the Royal Navy itself hasn't lost a major war itself. As for the Western colonies, the troops were simply not around to spare. Other parts of the Empire were seen as more pressing matters, and the America's were not seen as that important.

(Lucky for you guys, not so lucky for the other countries the Army blew to pieces. In retrospect I imgaine some people were kicking themselves for that decision. A reasonable complement of the Army would have crushed any uprisings and ended the dispute. Didn't work out like that though eh?
