Naval operations

Recommended Posts

Operation Flaspoint is played on islands.

Islands are surrounded by sea. wink.gif

We are greatly missing the naval component of OFP.

Of course Naval operations can be too complex so I do not mean full Naval scope.

I mean more Anphibious operations.

Aircraft Carriers (that can be walked inside)

LSD and LST ships that can really transport assault vehicles into a beach.

Hovercrafts...........

Also some Naval Aviation to provide air cover.

Some medium size combatants to protect the force and provide gunfire support...

As you see there is many stuff to be done, but I am sure we must have this area covered as well to be able to make full use of the game.

I am thinking on tournaments and Wars for large squads.

Ships should allow to walk inside, carry vehicles and cargo......

Of course we need Marines tounge.gif

would be fun to be able to make a mission were the mission is to take over a ship

get in, clear up the engine room, the control room, the kitchen (watch out for the chef! knives can be dangerous! biggrin.gif ), etc.

Don't forget the under water terain too..... it would be wonderful to have the ability to go under the water...submarines..divers....ect....endless possibilities once that is opened up....

:::picturing navy seal teams planting explosives on the enemy ship's under carrage.... entering bases through drain pipes....sewers....::: whew!!!

Yeah, Go Navy.  That was one part of OFP that was almost completely ignored, except for ONE LST.  Those LST's don't make it across thousands of miles of sea without escorts to cover them.

Plus they modeled the damage ability for them all wrong, 8 Mavericks could easily cripple a LST, unlike what's modeled in OFP.

If you guys want to mess with a great sim, go find Janes Fleet Command and get the NWP updates for it.

Besides possibily the Harpoon series, one of the best Real Time Modern Naval Strategy sims around.

I'm also part of Seawolves Furia, surface division. aka LCDR Havoc 21st if you ever get Fleet Command or if you feel like giving it a try, let me know. I tend not to like to advertise it round very much since I deal primarily with Fleet Command in SW and not OFP as a SW.

Anyways, Yes, carriers and landing craft with flight decks that WILL allow AI to land on them and allow good waypointing of crew in the ships to move around.  Also, we need a damn "Sit Down in chair or table" option.  I get tired of squatting and standing all day in OFP, my soldier knees are killing me..   tounge.gif

Anyways, all BIS would have to do is enable the ability for units to move around in vehicles (ships, vehicles, aircraft) while the vehicle or ship is moving, then provide "excellent" waypointing ability that invokes more precise AI movements.

Give me a Carrier, a Landing craft that AI and I can land on with helos, and the AI and me park their amphibious craft in from the loading port on the back.   That's about it from me.

Later.

Mr. Hitman.

just because you might not find it fun doesnt mean other might not, it doesnt particulary interest me either, but it opens new doors of possability.

Im sorry, but what could actaully be fun about walking through an aircraft carrier in a military sim such as OFP? You think you'll be able to interact with people, or use objects? No, you could walk, and erm.... walk. Wow...

well, maybe not do all of the place into the ships, but the main ways to get to the control deck and to walk around freely

would be fun if we could use an hangar on a ship to store an heli...that would make it possible to transport two heli on an attack ship for support or something

would be fun to be able to take off and land on a moving or stop aircraft carrier...hope that this will be enable in OFP 2 or maybe for OFP 3? if we ever get there wink.gif

Yes, that would be good, but lets look at it realistically, OFP was first and foremost an Infantry sim with the added bonus of being able to pilot planes, choppers etc, but you never really cared about anyone other than David Armstrong, and the cool cutscenes with his squad, you never got to rise in rank in the other roles, ok, you move from m60 commander to m1a1 and from Blackhawk to A10 but with the Infantry side of the game you got to go from Private right up the ranks, I cant see them doing it any different with OFP2.

I see teh naval issue being part of a bigger problem.. My suggestion which woudl fix the naval problem as a side lien is to allow objects to end up with set relative positions with another object..

An example woudl be say a chinook carrying a jeep..., Or landing craft carrying tanks, or a carrier carrying an aircraft, or even a lorry carrying troops

The theory would be another lod, that would set up like roadway. This lod when touched would mean that the item touching it would be moved in relation to the itme the lod belongs to... thats theory btw it might work it might not, this would then allow objects on objects, and with carefull work coudl even allow trailers to work.

If this where implemented, along with mulitple waepons systems, and les restrictive lod sizes then naval kit woudl be easy to setup and produce, from carriers to zodiacs.

You could say have a patrol boat with a zodiac on board, you got out of patrol boat, still on deck of said boat, enter the zodiac then embark the zodiac to go on a raid.

Its interesting to think that the navy itself cant take land without manpower, a ship can shoot, but the land is still land and beyond the realm of a ship.

Oh yes a side affect... we need to be able to define land and sea speed as separate entities so that varied amphibious speeds can be set and also hovercraft can be built.

Hope I not gone on too long...

I'd like to see some more navy stuff, along w/ more realistic aircraft. But for both navy stuff, and aircraft to be properly used, there would need to be much larger maps. A harpoon could barely be launched and turn towards the target w/ the current sized map.

I would really like to have a blackop misson when you undetected are going to enter the cargo area on a ship, and mabye plant a bomb, when you have done that you are returning undetected to your zodiak and returns to base,

*cut sceen* the cargo unloads, and a pretty high leader is inspecting... BOOOOMMMM */cut sceen* biggrin.gif

Or something like that... the problem is that we will need better CQB animations and AI for that to work, but if we get that, there are really great possibillities with a ship like that... smile.gif

CBFASI : for me it was not, very interesting what you said and it even make me think of another possibility when you have talk about a trailer and the zodiak

you transport the zodiak into a trailer or back of a truck, get near the sea, unload it and go do your mission then come back, get the zodiak on the trailer or truck, and get away smile.gif

would be fun also to have somekind of ferry! maybe it could be a civilian one

but we need some more rivers or something like that if we could use it at is full potential to transport both troops and light vehicules

It would be great if BIS makes it possible to walk on moving objects, dive, and swim. The community and the mod makers would do the rest of it! It's just a small aspect of the game but it has great potetial! smile.gif

When I did cambrian patrol we had to swim across a loch with full belt kit, ~50 pounds of weight in a bergen and our rifles.

It is possible smile.gif

(You couldnt just jump straight into the water though, you'd have to waterproof kit first - takes about 2 minutes)

Is there any official position of developers on the subject in OFP2?

This is the component which going to be missed even more with advances on terrain streaming front and such which potentially could allow island vs island maps in MP.

At least can we have infrastructure of classes and float phisycs (at least the basics) put in the game engine and scripting - the mods can do the rest.

I think the success of introduction of naval surface and underwater elements in such game as BattlField 1942 proves the need and validity for them whcih only increases giving that OFP maps and action is on much bigger scale.

I totally agree with the idea of expanding the role of naval support (and ability to swim etc) in the new version..... And modern weapons.. not stupid antiquated weapons.

OFP is a great soldier sim, but only missing a few things to be great all around war sim.Naval operations is surely one of them.Another great aspect of OFP is the capability to make the missions how you want.So if you don't want boats, don't use them in your missions,it's that easy.

I agree that all the watercraft would be nice, we already can assume gunboats for the Vietnam era.

I would love it, in MP you could respawn or start on the carrier, 60 players or so on each side

and have a sea knight or sea king fly in, drop off the people next to SF FOs in the LZ and get a new load. Also have ambhibious ships speeding up the rivers with royal marines clinging on. Ahh i used to love watching those exercises, like a big dance, so organised and fluid. SA80s on full auto as they charge against MG posts. Royal Navy harriers fly in and fire rockets at IR designated targets, then a new phase arises, the 58 infantry squaddies land in chinooks on the other side of the island, their objective is the airfield, each squad is controlled by a human player, they encounter landmines on the outer perimetre etc.

An entire Coop amphibious assault on multiplayer. You could aslo have engineers etc.

I like this idea.

I would be really to have a mission where you have to take over a ship with a seal or spetznatz team.. And I would like to see a submarine that can dive and shoot and a aircraft carrier!!! rock.gif

arent we missing the whole concept of OFP being an infantry based simulation. What's with all the Navy stuff?rock.gif??

Quite Frankly, the only navy concept we need is maybe artillery fire or cruise missiles. Vietnam took place in the jungle not the sea, right?

Heres a thought, if OFP is an infantry based simulation why does it have tanks...

Anyway..

In many instances naval units are supporting one way or another land operations, whether as a fire support platform, or a base of operations.

A good example is the Falklands War of 1982... If we had no ships then we could not of even attempted it, and this shows just how naval operations can help.

I seem to also remember that the US Navy performed several operations around the Mekong delta against numourous ground forces...

Hey, sure OFP is an infantery based simulator, but is it wrong to do it a naval and flight simulator too... wink_o.gif

At least I don't think so, and the naval part is something that should be much better that it is in OFP1, both the water and the viechles in it... smile_o.gif
