Win xp messanger service pop-ups

Recommended Posts

I recently had a problem with pop ups in win xp. These are grey pop ups that are sent using your system messenger service. To stop this happening do the following

1.Go to Start, then Run and type in services.msc Click Ok

2.Scroll to Messenger, select it, right click it and choose Properties.

3.Under startup choose "Disabled", then choose Stop.

4.When stopped, click Ok.

and now you wont be getting any pop ups while playing biggrin.gif

Thank GOD!!!

That program is Satan incarnate, I swear.

It's not so bad in Op Flash, but it will severly mess you up if it pops up while you're playing Half-Life (for Day of defeat)

Abnd Half-Life can't handle being minimized, so...

Thank you, thank you, a thousand times, thank you. smile.gif

No, this has nothing to do with those. Its a "Feature" of XP.

Actually, Messenger is turned 'on' by default in most installs of 2000 and XP. It's not activated by spyware or trojans generally.

Basically, as far as I can tell it was originally intended to allow a network admin to send messages to folks on the network. like service announcements and such.

Then the marketing scumbags figured out how to send spam to EVERYONE with the service running, and ran with it mad.gif

This is where being fluent in a few languages comes in handy, as soon as I realize it's a telemarketer I switch over to Russian and start talking to them about a random topic, then I see how long it takes before they hang up on me. It can be quite amusing. biggrin.gif

Yeah you actually do that, I'm going to start doing that... since I think it's rude to call like that in the first place. smile.gif

Especially when you are in the middle of an OFP mission tounge.gif or pondering the creation of the world, and then these nomads try to sell you debt cards or daily misinformation papers. (hand over the tin hat)

Nah. IMO, MEssenger is much, much worse.

If you have a good caller ID, it'll usually tell you when the persona calling is from a corporation. And if' it's a telemarketer, as soon as they start pitching the sale, I just hang up.

But Messenger makes Half-Life crash, and sometimes, it pops up a stupid window as often as once every 30 minutes. That makes me seriously angry. crazy.gif
