Why ofp is great

Recommended Posts

It's not the graphics, definitely. Or the weapons. Or the missions. Or the campaign.

It's the whole battlefield experience, the ability to lead units into combat and include all elements of a military force. Airborne units, armor, utility vehicles, infantry. And all this in a sort of realistic setting that spans for miles.

So, OFP should have all this and more of this, in order of importance!

1. The ability to command an entire company (of soldiers, armor, etc). Divided into 3 platoons, each platoons into 2 sections, etc. This would add a great strategic element to OFP without subtracting anything!

2. Larger, more detailed maps with actual villages. As it is, most of the maps in OFP are the size of a single village, and most of villages and "towns" in the game are nothing more than 5-6 houses.

3. An open ended campaign. For example, you've got two companies + some armor + some helicopters and you're tasked to mount an assault and destroy such and such force.

4. MUCH more detailed characters and character animations.

5. Artilliery (sp?) without having to resort to shell spawning scripts. Artilliery is one of the most important aspects of combat.

6. APCs that are a bit more resistant to RPGs. As it is now, my APCs and more of a liability than an asset in combat. Ok, a RPG should disable it, but not kill everyone inside.

7. More ammo! How can you lay down supressing fire when you've got 200 rounds or so?

You might notice that I'm very much into the strategic aspect of this game. This is because that there are a lot of great tactical shooters out there (Ghost Recon comes to mind), and frankly as a pure tactical shooter, OFP doesn't cut it at all.

HOWEVER, as a completely integrated battle field SIMULATION, it has much more to offer than any other game I've played.

Sorry if I'm being presumptious, please add your own two cents but remember what sets OFP apart from other games!

It's very simple. There were a lot of games with graphics of similar or better quality than OFP. So this doesn't set the game apart from the others.

Glad I could help! tounge.gif

I think he meant that there are no fancy lightning, fog, flame etc. effects that can be found from various new FPS games. But when you compare the gaming area and terrain cababilities OFP beats them all wink.gif. Check out the Maxed out graphics thread to see what I mean.

Not the graphics? whaa? for me the graphics are like photo realistic, with a new videocard there could be a significant difference in graphics. It is well worth the money. I sometimes just stop, and take a break from fighting and just look around at the high detailed trees, villages, the battlefield, vehicles! Even when i'm in a firefight and see a chinook over my head, I stop and look up at the detail... lol. The detail is always sharp on anything.... not like on my old voodoo 5 which I thought was one of the best cards back then.

Weapons are also good, could be a bit better .... + bullet drop.

Missions are very good but you have to play them the right way. A little tip from me: Play them as if you were there - makes the game MUCH more enjoyable.

The resistance campaign was one of the best exeperiences I ever had with any game. I also played it like I was actually in it and tried to beat every mission on the first try. It worked and I only died a few times.

Hi

The above points are dealt with by The Command Engine we should have Real Indirect Fire out soon It is in Alpha I had a bit of a play with it today (To cool down after giving our ISP a kicking)

http://www.main.thechainofcommand.net/

Our Own Forum is down for maintenance at the moment but you can download it all from the OFPEC mirror

http://www.ofpec.com/editors/CoC.php

Also look out for snYpir's SP and MP support package at OFPEC

Kind Regards walker

I agree with killerclick, although one other thing sets it

apart: The mods! not many games get so much attention

from such talented people. If it weren't for OFP's *easy

modding ability and the hard work of mod makers, the OFP

community wouldn't have lasted this long. Could you imagine

OFP without any addon's?

*by easy i mean that there are things like oxygen and

the scripting commands, some games require modmakers

to figure everything out and make their own tools.

To all people who think OFP's graphics are great, well sorry to burst your bubble, they aren't. Fortunately the gameplay more than makes up for it, and the battlefield experience too. However, the graphics are NOT excellent, even on highest detail. They are nice and they are enough, but htey are definately not close to being amazing. They can't be amazing since if they were, the game would chug way to much because of the island size.

To all the dummies here saying OPFs graphics are not great.

Go to page 40 of the OPF photography thread and look at Lee Harvey Oswalds post of the pic of the desert troops in the desert with the yellow tanks and hummers.

Then you can come back here and eat your words about OPF having not great graphics.

dude u must be play with a 386..... take a screen shot of like Aida from U2 and Gastroswky from OFP. well she might have more round things but look at the details of the ofp pic, they look like real stuff... all the games that are said to have "good gfx" the grafix are not very photorealistic at all. the most photorealistic game I know is ofp, and the only other genre that does this is flight simulators.

Ofp is the greatest because bis is a great bunch, and they had a great vision. I literally thank God for Bis tounge.gif

Don't you think that these apply more to 'What would you like to see in OFP2?'

I mean, you sound like you are suggesting stuff that would make it better more than saying what DOES make it better.

Yes, very nice, but how does it compare to... say... Morrowind? Or even Ghost Recon?

Character models (with the exception of the faces) are catastrophic. Trees and plants are also pretty basic, but I don't blame the dev team for this, no doubt they had to compromise.

And I DO think OFPs graphics are pretty good, ESPECIALLY with the large playing area involved. However that is NOT what sets this game apart, and it's not the major selling point for this game.

What do you mean? Do you agree or disagree with me?

I think you should have at least 8 clips, 10 probably, with the ability to carry extra. A rifle soldier without ammo is armed with nothing more than an expensive club.

I also think that while APCs should be vulnerable to RPG fire, not every person inside should get killed if the APC gets hit. Same goes for trucks and tanks. Disable it, yes. Destroy it, yes. But not kill everyone inside, it's not like they're riding a fuel barrel.

Certainly. But this is the part of the whole battlefield experience. It's a great technical feat to be able to show so much terrain in such detail. But compare it to Morrowind or Ghost Recon, screenshot by screenshot and you'll see that while those two games don't have huge environments as OFP(Morrowind does but it stops to load sometimes), they DO look better.

And to clarify, I don't think OFP graphics are BAD, I just think they're not the selling point of this game.

I wish the sky wasn't red at night in this game. It's good for some missions for dramatic effect, but on a permanent basis it's kind of annoying.
