Enemy detection

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm IceFire.

I was playing the Cold War Crisis mission "Interdiction" and was wondering about some things.

1) I was sneaking around on the top of the cliff where you start off and noticed that the enemies would occasionally shoot off flares into the air to illuminate the area.

I was wondering why they did this.

2) Sometimes in some stealth missions when you would be sneaking around an enemy base, the alarm would go off meaning that the enemy has detected you. How do they detect you? I mean is it that the enemy "VISUALLY" see you as in that you were in their physical line of sight(as in they were actually facing you and saw you), or does it have to do with triggers in certain parts of the map that makes the alarm go off automatically if you go on it?

I was wondering this because it seems that sometimes they detect you when they shouln't.

I dunno.

The AI uses both visual and audible cues to detect enemies. Shooting flares or firing weapons, leaving dead enemy bodies behind (ever wonder what the "HIDE BODY" command of the Spec Ops units was for?) etc. are all bad.

However, mission designers can also use triggers in their scripts that are set off when an enemy unit is present within a given area, even if the AI hasn't detected the enemy yet. This is often used to sound alarms or initiate vehicle / unit movement.

Ok, you mentioned "Hide body" as a way of preventing detection.

That seems wierd to me because I have killed enemies on roads, and other passing patrols later walked right past the body and did not react.

Also, why would they make it so that the alarm would be sounded even when the actual AI enemy hasn't detected you yet? That seems really unfair. If I am doing a really good job sneaking in an enemy base and the alarm sounded even though noone saw me.

Also, in the mission Interdiction, why do the enemy sometimes fire those flares? Is it because they suspected me? Or heard something?

Firing flares is just a scripted event, I guess. And yeah about dead bodies not being noted by enemy troops is something that I've seen too. Don't know why that hide body thing is useful, maybe for multiplayer? confused.gif

Hide body isn't always availiable, IIRC. Well, maybe it is on SpecOps missions; I dunno, I always have a rough time with those.

But the triggered events for alarms can sometimes be useful.

Such as, even if you get in detected; you have to work quickly, because once you're in, you only have so long before a bunch of enemy patrols return, and the base becomes much more populated; for example.
