toadeater 0 Posted March 10, 2003 I don't agree with these results. Battlefield 1942 is the worst game of the year, and I don't think Metriod Prime has nearly enough originality to be best game. Medal Of Honor wins for innovation!? What's wrong with these judges, are they paid for votes? Anyway, here are the results... Game of the Year Metroid Prime (Retro Studios) Original Game Character of the Year Sly Cooper from Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus by Sucker Punch Rookie Studio of the Year Retro Studios for Metroid Prime Excellence in Audio Jack Grillo, Rebecca Hanck, Erik Kraber and Yuan Liu for sound effects in Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Excellence in Game Design Romain de Waubert de Genlis, Ola Holmdahl, Johan Persson, and Niklas Persson for game design in Battlefield 1942 Excellence in Level Design Metroid Team for level design in Metroid Prime Excellence in Programming Mark Brockington, Scott Greig, Jason Knipe, Don Moar and Don Yakielashek for network programming in Neverwinter Nights Excellence in Visual Arts Shinji Hashimoto and Tetsuya Nomura for art direction in Kingdom Hearts Excellence in Writing Clint Hocking and JT Petty for writing in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Game Innovation Spotlights Animal Crossing (Nintendo) Battlefield 1942 (Digital Illusions) Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (2015, Inc.) The Thing (Computer Artworks) The GDC Awards advisory board also presented three special awards to the following: Lifetime Achievement Award Gunpei Yokoi, creator, Game Boy The First Penguin Award David Crane, Larry Kaplan, Jim Levy, Alan Miller, and Bob Whitehead, founders, Activision IGDA Award for Community Contribution Doug Church, technical director, Eidos

Unfortunetly games like BF1942 are allowed to get high praise becuase alot of online gamers just don't care that the Japanese never used the Mp44 or that the Americans didn't land at Arnhem, the British did. That reallly really annoyed me, how could they put the Americans at Arnhem, its not as if the British weren't in the game, did they never read a history book? Sure, Americans participated in the operation, but it was still the British who landed at Arnhem, thank you thank you. I the only award I really agree with is the sound award for MOH:AA. In one photo at the end of the first campaign in MOH:AA, there is a photo of a couple of American soldiers taking some German tankers prisoner. Thing is, in the real photo, those are British Tommies, not American GI's. I am so sick of popular American media trying to revise history into 'The US won the whole thing, all on its own!' They were among other things showing their "Codname: Eagle" which was the predecessor to BF 1942. It was actually a hilarious lecture. One of the guys was explaining to us how the game works etc and the other demonstrated it by playing it. So the first dude talked about how Eagle was not the typical frag-fest shooter but that you had to infiltrate and carefully sneak around, how you often could complete a mission without killing anybody. The other guy who was demonstrating was at the same time driving a truck and running over German soldiers, crashing though armed checkpoints and leaving a trail of total destruction . Codename Eagle was pretty cool from what I saw from the demo, and BF1942 is a good concept. Its great if you don't like lots of realism in your games but want to have big maps with vehicles without having to go into the dark twisted world of OFP My only gripe with BF1942 besides how unrealistic the gameplay is how neglegent they were on the history. They call it Battlefield 1942 yet wuite a few of the maps in BF1942 are from diffrent years other than 1942. And I think they could have made weapons for each nationality in the game, not a mish-mash of weapons thrown together. They spent years developing it so I'm sure they could have spent just a little bit of time to give the British a Bren gun so forth, but maybe they were afraid of upsetting the 'balance'. Oh how I hate it how developers strive for 'balance'. If once side had better weapons historicly, I think that should be modelled in the game and if that means that one side has an advantage, well tough luck. It means that players who chose to play the side with worse weapons will have to have more skill, since how much skill you have seems to be very important to people. There, thats my slightly off-topic rant and rave.
FSPilot 0 Posted March 11, 2003 BF1942 = WORST GAME EVER!!! No garand? Grenades blow up tanks? Bah, I could go on for hours. Plus I couldn't manage to hit anything unless I was prone. But that's how it always is.

Tex -USMC- 0 Posted March 11, 2003 BF1942 is, as my esteemed coleague put it above, the worst game that ever succeeded (except maybe Counter-Strike). Why? I can sum it up in one sentence. "Tank shells that have the ballistic properties of basketballs". That was pretty easy
Warin 0 Posted March 11, 2003 Caaaaaaaaannnnnn you feeeeeeeeel the loooooooove tonight. Of course, the fact that this game was made by some Swedes would make sense. They havent been in a shooting war since the invention of the tank. *peers over in Denoirs direction*
Col. Kurtz 0 Posted March 11, 2003 Yea, lets go and invade Sweeden, then maybe they won't make games as botched in the hisotry department as BF1942. Violence is the only way to teach them! Of course we'll be invading with Tornadoes piloted by Americans, M1A2s crewed by Nowergians and British soldiers with Kalishnakovs.
ralphwiggum 6 Posted March 11, 2003 why bother? just team them up with US troops. we'll take care of it in a natural way man, I wish Norweigian game is available. should be better than some Swedish made one like BF1942....
hovmand 0 Posted March 11, 2003 Have any of you played Europa universalis, exellent game from Sweden. But i think just because the government allowed BF1942 to be released, they should hand over Skĺne to Denmark where Hitman 1+2 was made Im seriously getting pissed of at some of the people playing this game, they say that it is so original and some even say that it is realistic, and it pisses me off that OFP dosent get the credit it deserves..... But check out Europa Universalis 1+2, or Hearts Of Iron.

Die Alive 0 Posted March 11, 2003 I got BF1942 two or three weeks ago. I played and finished the campaign (easy mode at first), and now and then, I jump into a 64 player server, where I usually find myself trapped in a spawn camper's hell. I can't fly the planes for shit, I'm better off on foot than in a tank, and there's like 12 trees total on most maps, with lots and lots of open ground where you get sniped from 1337 snipers. I like it that you can swim in the water. And the commanders MG is good enough to shoot down planes (the flack is useless after the last patch). It should never win an award for anything. -=Die Alive=-
