"don't disconnect during game or get banned"

Recommended Posts

I've seen it written among the "welcome text" & server rules on a couple of servers lately.

What's up with that? Like, if you join the server and play a map, you can't disconnect without getting banned from the server. That's ridiculous. No, maybe it isn't so fun when lots of people disconnect when you're playing, but you can't force them to stay when there are other things interesting people, like real life! And what do they do, write down all players' ID's as soon as they connect, so that they can ban them if they disconnect...? Probably just a lame threat to try to reduce the number of disconnections during game.. Lame. icon8.gif

What happens if your ISP drops your connection, or your PC crashes? You suffer punishment, like banning? Makes zero sense to me.

Hi guys,

Don't take that sort of thing too seriously, only amatuer servers would even consider such foolish policy.

Do not fear that you will find this on many servers, it will never be on any server I run and the other admins I know like on Stoners, etc know the drill too well to implement silly policies like that,. smile.gif

Actually there is a good reason for this kind of ban, players on losing teams always disconnecting without notice, basically wasting other peoples time...

I'm not sure if it is actually a good policy, and should be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Hmm, I guess this kind of thing is inherrent to adversarial, people disconnecting a leaving uneven teams.

In coop it's not so much of a problem, people usually only disconnect after they are dead (assuming no respawn).

its because when sum one leaves it stuffs up the game for everyone else the numbers drop, teams become wildly unbalanced and often a reassigne is begged for at a certian point, JIP would fix this.

iNeo: it is possible to do something like that. Just type in #userlist at the start of the mission and you can scroll up and look for the id of people leaving later. Or write down the name and get the id from the logfile. I would never think of adding such a rule to my server but banning people that are leaving is definitively possible.

Zeus Server would never consider such a rule, and has some of the most responsible admins out there.

62.146.60.190:2302 - Zeus

62.146.60.190:2500 - Zeus Addon Server

*plug over*

although it is damn annoying when you go back for someone who has just begged you to do so who then disconnects 5 mins into a Nam coop or a CTI.

Yes I know, that's why I said this in my first post:

Good point, OFP wasn't made for perfectly even matches, but for war simulation smile.gif

Perhaps banning is a bit too harsh punisment.

But quitters can ruin a game. Take for example the Battlefield map. It's large and takes a long time. You just need many players to keep the various flag occupied. No sense in playing this map with only a handful of players.

Now what happens often is that you start with 12 vs 12. And after an hour you are playing something like 7 vs 4. Not uncommon... mad.gif

From an admins point of view i can only say it IS annoying when you wait for some guy, even reassign for him, wait til he d/l the mission and then see him quit, sometimes even before the mission starts which leaves you with a lot of wasted time for all players and an AI you would have turned off otherwise.

Sometimes someone disconnects unintentionally, your internet connection may break down, something important may be happening in real life, etc. But i don't think everyone who disconnects has reasons as the ones above. And it is not cool for the other guys who waited for that player and who then for example have to play the mission with an ai leader or something. I don't mind people leaving the server after they died, but the other behaviour is really antisocial. And as i try to keep my server free from antisocial behaviour i may ban those guys as i ban TK or people who insult other players.

I look at bans as a death punishment. You gotta be real sure that the guy did something bad and that he did it on purpose.. TK's do happen, you can't ban people for one TK. People using that 4 digit illegal cd-key, people TK'ing at own spawn, etc, yes ban them. But don't give an individual that accidentally TK'ed his teammate a 'death punishment'. confused.gif

As for the quitters, yes they might ruin the game sometimes, but you can't stop him from exit a game because it doesn't interest him.. Besides, every ban will make it a little harder to fill up your server for those Battlefield 1985 maps.

Just my 0,02€ smile.gif

Obviously.

I didn't say that i "always" ban "every" TK or quitter, but that i "may" ban those guys. As i said earlier in this thread i think it's ridiculous to put up a "all quitters will be banned" policy for a server.

But when you are waiting for transport at the start of a mission, all guys in one place for the whole time and one player TKs another to get his gun that's fairly obvious. And i don't need that kind of player on my server...

And regarding the "4 digit id": there are more than that one. Having server logs makes it real easy to recognize warez ids, when one id has like 50 different names in the logs you can be pretty sure that it is a warez id... and there are more than the one "4 digit id" wink.gif

Have you ever considered that so called "quitters" may just crash?

Happens to me sometimes and that's with Win2K Pro which is uber stable.

benu, I agree with you. My last post wasn't fully aimed at you, but at the topic itself. smile.gif
