Random death while scouting

Recommended Posts

I've seen this issue scattered around before in threads, and it seems the issue has never been resolved in any of them. I am hoping that can change this time.

I am working on some scouting missions on Altis, stationed in Gori, during The East Wind campaign. I have just completed the Vet Clinic side mission, and have now driven up to Oerokastro to do the medical supplies mission. It's not marked on my map, but I remember it being there from my last playthrough. The issue arises when I approach the town. In a vehicle, I am able to just get to the entrance of the town before I explode for no reason. The game does not give me a cause of death. On foot I can not get close to the town, I just drop dead with no indication as to why. Again, the game does not tell me why I have died.

The only clue I have is that one time, just before dying, Kerry (The player character) states "I must be way off course, better check the map" or something along those lines. Instantly after finishing this sentence I drop dead. I have scouted the area for snipers using a rangefinder, and can spot nothing that would in any reasonable manner explain these deaths. The only thing I can think of is that the game believes I am outside the playable area, and is killing the player for abandoning a mission. However the game does not state that I am outside of a playable boundary, as would be expected if that were the case. As such I am at a loss, unable to explore a large area on the Northern side of Altis, and unable to activate or complete this side mission to get some supplies.

Probably that's the reason. You are way off course so the game decided to kill you off.

If you've done the vet clinic mission, you need to return back to base first, then select next mission you want to do. I think you cannot do all of them at once.

I've done plenty of scouting missions one after another, so I don't think that's really the issue. The whole map should be open for exploration at your own risk, so I don't see why it would kill you off for exploring part of the map.

The whole map cannot be explored all at once because the campaign was not design that way. Unlike Old Man campaign, you can explore whole of Tanoa no problem. With East Wind, there probably a lot of nothingness if you're allowed to explore the whole map. Anyway I gave a possible solution, try it if it works. If it doesn't then maybe some other people more experienced will help.

This. 100% this.

Its the same reason that earlier GTA games locked off part of the map with broken bridges etc. Its designed for pacing. Some missions/campaigns may very well allow you to explore the entire map from the outset, this one clearly doesn't...

Not a bug. Look carefully at your map and you will see diagonal red stripes (and sometimes exclamation marks) denoting the maximum area you can go before entering a "restricted" zone. If you attempt to leave this boundary, you'll walk into a minefield (if you're on foot), get blown up by a rocket (if you're in a vehicle) or get shot down by a missile (if you're in a plane/helicopter). The damage you get from these sources is scripted so you cannot survive it even if you use the debug console to make Kerry invincible with allowDamage.

The village is only accessible while you're at Bomos (the first hub after arriving on Altis). You cannot return to Oreokastro because that's outside of the boundary for Gori's Scouting missions. Unfortunately, the dev(s) at BI responsible for making the Scouting missions forgot to mark that area as restricted so it can be a little misleading since you would think that it's safe to go there...even though it isn't. For reference, this is what the playable zone looks like:

As you can see, Oreokastro is just outside of the boundary, hence why you're dying immediately upon entering the village.

There is no limit to the number of Scouting missions you can do in a single run. There's no need to return to the base camp either (whether that's Bomos, Gori or Topolia) unless you've run out of inventory space and need to drop off loot, or you don't know where the other Scouting missions are located and need to eavesdrop on the conversations between the FIA guerillas at the hub.

It's something of a consistent design choice that BI has kept for their free roaming missions over the entire series...bar the linear stuff like Auxiliary Ops back in Arma 1. Even in Arma 2's Razor Two/Manhattan missions, you were never limited to completing just one objective at a time.

Thank you for the information. There must be something a bit weird with my game, because I'm not seeing any kind of boundary markers. There are points indicating areas of interest, usually a town or something that are heavily guarded, but I have no visual indication of a 'scouting border'.

As for a slight concern towards this setup, how are you supposed to do the scouting mission down near Kavala where you need to kill the helicopter pilots? I am now based in Topolia, and the AI clearly talked about this mission, it is marked on my map. However the game killed me for 'leaving the playable boundary' before I got even half way there. Surely you're allowed to reach the missions you have marked on your map. Why bother mentioning them to the player if they are impossible to reach?

They aren't marked on the north, west and north-west (an oversight by BI devs) but are clearly shown on the eastern and southern sides.

You cannot enter through Kavala because it's a restricted zone:

Note how the city is shaded with red lines denoting that it's off limits to Kerry. Keep in mind that there's no reason for you to attack from the north as the pilots are resting at the beach resort in Neri (grid 036-114), which is well outside of Kavala's city limits.

I'm sorry to hear about your trouble with your scouting mission. It sounds frustrating not being able to explore that map area and complete the side mission.
Have you tried contacting the game's developers or community for help? They may have encountered similar issues and could provide some insight or potential solutions.

Welcome on forum.

It's a rather old topic. Restriction areas are intended. You cannot explore the map as you wish in this campaign. Some scenarios have a story arc or keys for processing in a sensible way.

Welcome

Reads like a spammer or even chatbot to me, seeing as how this IS the community forum, where one might also contact the developers.

*edit* - And there it is, they've added their spam link.
