Garbage collector question

Hi, how does the inbuilt garbage collector work? Is it puting everything into arrays then looping conditions? or is it using eventHandlers on each unit or an missionEH?

Therefore I guess that it is not just crawling arrays as you would do it by script. It should use engine functions to achieve it and therefore it should be faster as a scripted garbage collecting.
