Oberon3d 0 Posted January 29, 2003 What is more difficult? I know the answer but I would like to know what people thinks.. Making a 3d model is fairly fun and easy but when the texture time comes everibody asks for someone to make the textures for the model as if that was just polishing. It´s taking me four times to make the textures than what it took me to do the 3d model. I think that that´s the longest and hardest bit of the model as you have to keep going forward and backwards. You also have to be very carefull with the mapping if you want the pieces to be on the right place and the cammo follow smoothly the surface of the model. That´s why I´m quite reluctant to models almost untextured or lacked of texture effort A model might be perfect modeled, right sized and "fly" like the original but with those textures I won´t bother to even try as I wouldn´t feel in the real thing as I do with that Vietnam SEB pack Huey ( what a piece of art that is) So texture or model?....In the graphics side of course I know nothing on scripting and configuring. USMC Sniper 0 Posted January 29, 2003 I love making models, but I absolutely HATE the texturing so bad, it's undescribable. It's just so tedious, annoying, and hard to make a good texture. Plus if you want to put the addon into a different pbo it takes a long time to redefine paths for the textures.
nopulse 0 Posted January 29, 2003 Speaking of modeling and texturing. I came across this site the other day, its a site devoted to cgi modelers and texturers. Â The stuff these people do is truly amazing stuff. Take a look at this model and texture! I wish I could do the amazing stuff these people can do
Guest BratZ Posted January 29, 2003 I dunno about you but I find the modellling part is alot easier than texturing I can model most anything I want in one night,I couldn't make and paint textures in that time
Oberon3d 0 Posted January 29, 2003 So as there is more effort in the texture...it should be understood that a 3d model is just a 20% of the final thing (script and export 30%) and texture 50%.?
PiNs_Da_Smoka 0 Posted January 29, 2003 I'm with USMC Sniper, i LOVE to model. I could do it all day. Well, not really, for the most part it is a very tedious task in itself. Speaking outside of OFP modeling also. But i hate texturing. Honestly, i can't make a texture to save my life. And in OFP, when i try to texture in O2, its always crap and sloppy. Even if someone makes the textures for me. I am one of those that slip the model to someone else for texturing. (stares at Vixer 3 weeks later ) Its not because i don't want to, jsut because i can't. If i could, i would do it. But in the case with Vixer, i supplied him with some tons of high res pics of the model from all angles. So i didn't throw an empty model at him and say "texture this" and expect him to find everything. If you give someone something to texture, please make sure to help out as much as you can. I know texturing ain't easy in O2. Although in Lightwave, what i use, texturing is a breeze and probably couldn't get any easier.
Romolus 0 Posted January 29, 2003 One problem of texturing for OFP is also the fact that OFP is using DXT1 textures with only 16bit colors and a compression that makes the textures look verry different in Max than in OFP depending on what colors you use and how. I think many ppl would make the textures by themself if the difference wouldn't be so big of what they create in Photoshop or Paintshop Pro to what they see ingame then. Also not everyone is an craphics artist. I think it's actually easier to learn how to make low poly models than to learn how to paint a good texture for the model. Llauma 0 Posted January 29, 2003 The models are genarally pretty simple. At least they should be. But the texturing requires skills if you attempt to do all from scratch. As Romulus says you need good artistic skills which takes some time to get. I had not done any 3d modelling before I tried O2 but I had some skills in doing graphics, yet the texturing is definitely the hard part.
