What modelling program do you use?

Recommended Posts

I use a couple programs:

O2: sometimes I just feel like it, plus I'm used to working in it now.

3DS Max: for more complex things, such as detailed sniper rifles and such.

Milkshape 3D: for the very low-poly things, such as MAC10's.

Ya but my dad is an engineer and he needs to have it at home so he can make some models of whatever he makes.

Ah.

But also, is that 3d modeling program really that much? Its a bit pricey, just to make models, when you can download Gmax for free. confused.gif

I'm too impatient to work with those programs.

I tried designing my own plane with x-plane once. It didn't work out well. crazy.gif

Maya 4.5 from Alias wavefront

Milkshape for converting

and Interchange 3D for the file format changes.

We have this programs at work otherwise they would ruin my bank account biggrin.gif

They are used for tactical maps and rendered situations and simulated flightpaths and for translating Sat images into 3D scenarios. I have not much of knowledge with Maya as it is the most complex and powerful 3D program these days but I try to convince my boss to hand me a licenced copy for home useage wink.gif

Also, doesnt 3DS Max have a thing that you have to plug into your printer port, in order to run it?I heard about that thing. It just keeps people from using it on more then one computer.

But for $3000, i'd just buy a brand new computer. All though, if your a game developer, it might pay for its self, if your game is a hot selling game.

02...

It's pretty easy to work with when you get used to it.

I use a combo of Maya 4.5, 3D Studio Max 4, and Lightwave 7.5 (All of which are legal copies).

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the files generated by 3DS Max 3 and 3DS Max 4? I have the 3rd version at home and I can't seem to open files that were probably made in 3DS Max 4.

u mean they don`t have free copies of 3ds max on the net wow.giftounge.gif

I`ve got demo versions of modelling programs and some full ones like gmax lying about.

Gmax doesn`t do any of the rendering stuff that 3ds max does but i think u could buy a plugin for gmax to extend its capabilities smile.gif

Just wondering: wouldn't it be more practical/better to use a specialized software like ERDAS Imagine, ER Mapper or at least a GIS with raster capabilities? I mean you can do the whole preprocessing with these packages and you have much better analytical capabilities.

If you're going to ruin your bank account, do it the right way! tounge.gif

I once won 3DS MAX in an open contest. Didn't even open the box but sold it for 2/3 of its original price and was drunk for the rest of the week biggrin.gif

And indeed the rest of the money went in a new PC, as I wouldn't have been able to run it on my old maschine (P1 133MHz) anyway.

I don't have the patience for this artistic stuff...

I'm not patient but it's extremely satisfying to make a wicked new thing for a game, trust me if you start with modelling, programming, the likes, you'll be hooked.

As usual, I doubt 3DS Max 4 files are made to be forward compatible with 3DS Max 3 software (or that 3DS Max 3 is forward compatible). However 3DS Max 4 is surely backward compatible and can open or import 3DS Max 3 files.

Hope this helps a little.

Guest BratZ

I just started 3d modeling, basically just for OFP use.Been a bodyman for 17 years and I would much rather do this!

I am hooked after only like 2 months ( I played with buildings and large objects for a bit...bigger is not always better ,lol)

I am currently finishing up texturing a WW2 warplane the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver and I have done it all with O2 and Paintshop Pro.And makepbo of course.Helldiver is ingame and has some new innovations.

Powerful, very, complex, possibly. Best? Nah. That lays upon opinion and preference. I've seen PLENTY of things made in Lightwave that surely are just as good and/or better then things made in Maya. Like i said, its preference.

Odd, i see NO reason why this would be needed to be done. You got any reason why you do this? I mean, i'm sure there are things that are done in Maya and not in LW, and vice versa. But there are ways around it and plugins which can perform the actions with alot less hassle.

If you guys haven't noticed, i'm a faithful Lightwave user. I have not used Maya, or 3DSM, but i have no need to even try either of them. Lightwave makes me tingly inside. Lightwave has been used in just as many movies and tv shows and whatnot then Maya and 3DSM (although, admitedly, 3DSM and Maya are used more on video games, but the list that LW has is not a small or shabby one) Lightwave is VERY user friendly, easy to use, and has the most resources (tuts free plugins) out there that i have seen anywhere. I love it.

*gives LW a kiss*
