Does hosting create low FPS?

Recommended Posts

I have a I7 3770k with 32gb of 1600 ram and a rx5700xt video card and I get very poor frame rates especially when I host missions I made to play with a friend.  Is this because Im hosting?  Ive even lowered the graphic settings and they still average 30FPS.

Thanks

Some wrong scripts - bad mods, even if no error, can drastically impact the performance for nuts.

Does the hosts pc have more demands put on it then the player joining?

Of course. Your hosting engine must exchange some sync on network. At least, the units positions/stances, the firing data...  of all units/vehicles on server. The host will receive the equivalent data for all local units from client(s). See locality.  What needs to be broadcast impacts on network then resource then FPS. The more units, the less FPS. The reason why BI created dynamic simulation and all performance features you can find in editor.

But, one of the main reason stays the bad (MP) scripting.

Thanks for the info.  How can you make sure the scripts are good?  Probably a short question with a long answer.

What's wrong with 30 FPS?

Theres alot of things that affect FPS, this is such an old conversation its becoming a joke, i should compile a thread of all the confirmed, legitimate answers of those in the

community that best explain, outline with data, graphs and what have you on what influences FPS, whether its hosted, dedicated, GSP, or just

in singleplayer.

Let me give you a short run down off the top of my head of what could possibly make or influence fps to drop:

1. Computer specs - What are you running the game with?

Even with a decent computer, what you think is good compared to whats been tested and proven to be ideal are two different arguments that will spin your head

and make you think twice before going to build or upgrade, why i highly recommend having a talk with Oldbear, Groove_C, Tankbuster, Chris.B, Domokun and some of the few other guys that consistently post on this thread:

https://forums.bohemia.net/forums/topic/187603-will-my-pc-run-arma3-what-cpugpu-to-get-what-settings-what-system-specifications/

Thats not to say that they are the only ones in the community at least on the forum here that know exactly what may or may not effect FPS but for that thread i linked they are the top go to guys, imo to

ask about at least computer hardware and what effects the game and what is ideal you buy, build, run, and or upgrade too.

Get the facts, an unbiased review, ask about your specs, and list any issues you may be having and these guys can tell you what the issue is at least from a computer standpoint.

On a side note to this, a weak cpu, ram with low frequency such as the OP's 1600 mhz, an HDD vs SSD, will effect fps and performance overall, but that also depends on the next point.

2. What are you playing?

Even with a decent hardware to play with what are you playing exactly when you do play?

  • A heavily scripted mission, spawning alot of AI at once.
  • Alot of Ai already placed, rendered and moving, lacking use of a caching script/function.
  • Bad scripting, using codes not meant for MP.
  • Using code thats ideal for other things based on what the desire is in a mission vs what is being used, there are always more efficient methods to execute something.
  • Playing a singleplayer mission being your own creation, or anothers that requires alot of mods.
  • Loading or using alot of gameplay mods.
  • Missions with alot of moving objects, vehicles, infantry, planes, explosions, ect,. on the screen at once.
  • Settings - large view distances, over 3000m+ Large shadow, and object distances.
  • MP - Server settings, server hardware, number of players on a server at once, type of mission being played, modem, router, internet connection

There are so many things that effect fps.

If you had the ideal computer that would be one thing you could rule out of effecting the fps, next you would need to based on what your playing is look

at the mission design, layout, scripting/code, and any required mods.

As i said in the past if you establish a go to list, a protocol on what needs to be looked at and or checked to determine what is creating an issue in your game,

for example lets say a mission wont start on your server, there is a procedure for that, that most veterans of MP, and the game overall have a decent idea of what to look for and what to do about it.

Taking the time to ask, investigate, and learn about an issue or a potential issue, will only benefit you down the road, it will also help you prevent situations that lead up to it,

sometimes its not about the hardware, sometimes its player choices, and error that make the FPS drop and game have issues whatever they may be.

Cheers!
